Talking point: What are you playing this weekend?

I've been playing loads of Slime Rancher, it's surprisingly fun to find all the Treasure Pods and unlocking the 7Zee Club items.
Also playing Sunless Sea, trying to get more money by visiting Mangrove College over and over. Finally unlocked the Zubmarine a few weeks ago and having fun with escaping enemies by surfacing/diving.
However, it also crashes somewhat randomly. I learned through looking at logs that it's running a Unity-wrapped version of .NET or perhaps Mono. Should probably look deeper into it later...

Embrace, extend, and protect? Microsoft joins the Open Invention Network to 'protect Linux and open source'

I'm still skeptical about Microsoft being a net good for Linux. As for the dreaded "three Es", there are a lot of signs that Microsoft is moving in on what was once considered FOSS "territory". Whether or not they mean well has yet to be seen over the long term. The new Linux kernel CoC is also concerning because it does seem to codify "niceness" and admin discretion in a way that could mean "I can kick you off the project for no reason (or for being offensive to anybody online ever)."
Call it conspiracy if you like, but when this particular CoC has made some projects devolve into infighting, I'm not obligated to say "yeah, everything's fine with Linux."
And no, I don't really want people to convince me otherwise about these worries, please don't try (I've already read the positive comments here on both the article and the CoC and made note of them). I've been burned too many times by too many people/projects in the past to let this kind of stuff go completely.
To get back on-topic a bit more: If Microsoft helps Linux, great, but a business with shareholders rarely stops saying "what's in it for me" and tries to do whatever possible to make sure they've made more money than the last quarter; sometimes they do it in a "nice" way, sometimes they do it in an asshole way.
It isn't exactly Microsoft that I'm innately suspect of, it's any publicly traded company. Good things in companies or companies themselves can fail because of shareholders getting too poor. (Glad Valve has stayed private...)
All we can do is wait and see... (EDIT: put an extra word in for clarity)

Thanks for making this article. I'm sort of on the fence with "cinematic" games that tend to go for atmosphere and neglect gameplay tuning, but this one seemed like it had promise. I'm gonna buy it thanks to you. :)
What are you clicking on this weekend and what do you think about it?

Just bought Enter the Gungeon (Jacksepticeye was replaying it and it looked awesome!) and managed to get it running on Arch Linux with Steam Controllers by using SC Controller, otherwise it crashes. (Don't know why SC Controller would make it not crash... :/ )
It's so much fun, my family is playing co-op in turns, it's a blast! (Haha...)

Shoot, this is huge (so late to the article! :( ). I was in a daze for a while after this, just shouting randomly and saying "holy shit" over and over.
Sure hope that once I can afford a proper AMD GPU that I can play the first two Mass Effects again with it. (Screw EA otherwise, no more money for them, I'm never using Origin to only play ME3, even though I downloaded the demo years ago with my old dual-boot. :P)
At least it'll take away the problem of additional overhead running Windows Steam client through Wine to play Windows Steam games, which is definitely a good thing if your machine's specs aren't top-notch. :)

Just don't be surprised at the vitriol. GoL being a place for discussion doesn't make this happen, devs like Garry make this happen, everywhere that people (mostly) speak freely online.
I don't know why you're expecting people to stay nice in the comments when you're reporting on something that you surely must know will piss people off. :/ It isn't realistic.
Nor can you personally be held responsible for the thoughts, feelings, criticisms and anger of everybody here, that just doesn't make sense. *chuckle* If you wanted a place where everyone was always reasonable, why have a gaming website at all? :)
Is it Valve's fault that their forums are full of shitposting? There are also good and valuable discussions there that help people. Should Valve offer forums on Steam at all because some parts of them are full of anger? Is that Valve's fault, or the individuals who use their platforms' fault?
Trying to prevent online conflicts too much just makes people dig in their heels and *insist* they are right to keep being angry, and they stay angry for longer than if left alone (genuinely extreme examples as stated above aside).
Not saying we shouldn't try for decent discussion, that's the ideal, but we can be hotheaded sometimes and think things through calmly at other times. :) It'll all pass with time, just trust us.

Quoting: liamdaweEdit: I've said all I will probably say on this, I don't really have anything to add without repeating myself at this point. People are free to vent a little, because the situation sucks and I really am not trying to be "demeaning" in any way, but we have a certain level of discussion to hold here I just don't want comments to be rammed full of insults :)Eh, not sure you can avoid that kind of thing if there's a comment section. If it escalates into crazy shit like death threats or suggesting violence, yeah, delete it.

It sounds like you're saying, "oh, getting angry with developers about their Linux support is normal, so don't get so angry!" I'm surprised that you don't know that attempting to stifle someone's anger just makes it boil over more. :/
It may be unpleasant to see anger here, but at least we're (somewhat) more immune to Windows trolls on GoL, and we can trust that all our criticisms *won't* get dismissed out of hand like on any other platform. That's part of what makes GoL a better place to comment on Linux issues. This "simmer down kids!" you're pulling is sort of demeaning. Most of us are adults, we're all Linux gamers, and we'll get a bit pissed if we feel like someone is making off with our $75, $50, $45, even $20 or less unfairly.
Liam, your machine specs are very nice. You don't always need to buy games to try them. That $30 game you could write off as a business expense might be no skin off your nose, but to me, I'd have to worry about eating and paying the bills on time.
If our trying to get developers' to listen to Linux gamers and respect us is not going according to plan, then yes, we have every right to complain and request that they do better. If not here, somewhere else, because that money we spent on the games might be precious. I'm pretty sure more people in relative poverty are Linux gamers because of the lower OS overhead; I *am* in poverty by my country's standards myself.
So yes, I'll say "you're not supposed to do that" with proof of the bad behaviour, eventually angrily and with swears in it if things have gone too far, to the developer, to GoL, to anybody who'll listen, because I just lost food for my family for the experience of the game. $30 is NOT nothing.
It also isn't journalistic bias to show that you think someone did something wrong, as long as there's a fair rationale behind it. You can do this without sensationalizing anything and just reporting the objective facts. Been a while since you've done a labelled Editorial. If you wanted to firmly separate the objective reporting and your own opinions, there's that option.
You're already biased by being a gamer and doing it on Linux, so strict neutrality is not really possible for you as-is. :/ That's just human and not a character flaw. Everybody has a bias, the only trick is to let it not cloud your judgement.

Quoting: liamdaweI respect your opinion, but I completely disagree. I can understand something, while still not being happy about it.The idea is that you're saying to others "don't attack anyone!" when there *is* some fair rationale behind what they say. A commenter can say (paraphrasing generally here) "someone did something (and I have proof of it) and that's why I'm angry".

I think this guy is questionable at best, but I don't know what his Linux "game plan" is any more than anybody else does. So I'll wait and see what he's got to say for himself, too.

Quoting: nox...People in here really need to calm down until we have proper information.I second this; vent your spleen a bit if you must, but you might be wasting your time on trying to get everyone else to agree that somebody else is bad/good. People don't often change their mind (especially online) and trying to convince everybody to agree will probably not work.

Quoting: x_wingIt's not 100% Nvidia fault.There, clarified my comment a bit. Didn't think it would only be that to blame for lost sales if there isn't good QA in general. Don't own Rust. ^_^;

Quoting: Leopard...Turned out it was a Nvidia driver bug.Wow. If he's got Nvidia's Linux drivers to blame for some of the lost game sales (their drivers have been pretty impossible for some laptops), that's pretty shitty of Nvidia.
