Not that I agree with Ubuntu's move here, but in some way this also shows the problems with proprietary software. Yes, Windows does a better (but not perfect) job of keeping old binaries runnable, but it comes with the price of increased complexity, which causes more security holes. Not to mention that all those games that are not maintained anymore, some of them even having their source code lost by the developers, also contain bugs that will never get fixed, some of them security-related.
I really wish more game developers would open source their code, they can still keep the assets proprietary and sell them. But at least we wouldn't have the need to keep binary compatibility forever. If there was still enough interest in an old game, some people would surely help to fix the code to make it run on 64-bit.

The downloadable version of Gone Home didn't work for me out of the box with the view being stuck and the mouse not responding. I had to change my desktop regional settings to US or set the environment variable LC_ALL=C before running the executable.

Quoting: GustyGhostI have no problem with building form source except for programs that pollute the rest of my system. Does Supertux Kart stay neatly in it's source folder? If I build software from sources and install it system-wide on Debian/Ubuntu, I always use checkinstall [External Link] instead of "make install", which makes it very easy to uninstall it.

In my opinion using Wine/Proton to provide a Linux port is an implementation detail that the end users shouldn't even have to know about. The important thing is that the developers support the Linux version, meaning that they test it on Linux, make sure it runs reasonably well and fix bugs.
Optimally, they would contribute to the Wine development if something does not work yet, or at least report bugs upstream and work around or avoid features that do not work yet. And improvements to an open source project like Wine is something I personally care more about than getting the last bit of performance in a closed source game.

I might try it again once they make the font size larger or configurable. You need eagle eyes to read the texts.
Psychological horror 'Lust for Darkness' is coming to Linux, developers want to see demand for it

Bummer. I already watched a let's play of this game because I had never expected it to come out for Linux. Now I can't play it because I've already seen all the spoilers. It's a pretty unconventional combination of dark erotic and horror game, although the ending was a bit unimpressive.

I liked Thief 2 and TDM feels very much like it. This could be one of the showcases of great open source games. Too bad they used the non-commercial CC license for their media, which is not a free license according to the Open Source Definition, the Free Software Definition and the Debian Free Software Guidelines. For example, this prevents it from being packaged in the standard Debian repository.
What are you playing on Linux this weekend and what do you think about it?

I played Rise of the Tomb Raider Endurance Mode yesterday. It turns the game into a pretty hardcore survival game. I started playing it two weeks ago and got hooked on it but it also is a bit too stressful for me, so I decided to play it one more day and try to increase my highscore and then uninstall it. Which I did: 13 days survived, 2.16M points, my personal record.

First time in a while that all games in the bundle had Linux support, just like the early humble bundles. Although there are still additional games to be added to the bundle in 5 days, so this could still change.

[quote=DeinFreund]It'd be great if you could help zk get into one of the repositories. Keep in mind that ZK needs to be always up to date for online play and to receive newly released content, so it pretty much needs to be self-updating.
I wish I had the necessary skills to help...
If ZK needs frequent updating to be functional, then maybe a launchpad repository would be a better solution. This would still be an improvement over downloading binaries from different game developer sites because launchpad guarantees that the binary was built from a given source code and not altered (and with the reproducible builds project at Debian there is even work on making that provable).
