I really wish top-quality open-source games like this were available in the standard Debian/Ubuntu repositories. That is still my preferred method of installing software without having to worry about malware and other security risks.

Outlast Deluxe Edition is currently free on the Humble Store

Outlast is definitely a good choice for Halloween. I've already played it and also the DLC. Hopefully Outlast 2 will soon be released for Linux. They said it would come soon after the Windows release together with the Mac version, but neither Linux nor Mac have been released yet.

Quoting: GuestI really hope this doesn't use the same RNG as Faster Than Light. I don't like games in general that build a major mechanic around an RNG anyway... or in the case of FTL the main mechanic is the RNG.

That's what I didn't like about FTL, 101 ways to screw you over with very few that could help you out along the way.
I consider FTL mostly a game of skill and the RNG is essential for the variety and great replayability. On normal difficulty, I win more than 60% of the games and among the lost ones are many where I knew I made some mistakes and that could still have been winnable. Sure, there are some games that you cannot win, but my guess is that it is less than 10%.

What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

The Witcher 2. I bought it a while ago on a sale because it was dirt-cheap and I had heard that they had resolved the performance issues with their wrapper, but I only recently found the time to play it. So far I like it: good performance, only a few occasional crashes (that might not even be related to Linux), and even if the gameplay is not perfect, the story, graphics and atmosphere are very enjoyable.

FTL was a gem, it will be hard to top. @Feda It never crashed for me and I played it on three different graphics cards and GPUs (Nvidia, Haswell, Atom).

Shouldn't this be tagged Open Source in addition to Free Game? Or is the full souce code not available?

It looks like more classic Topware Interactive games are coming to Linux

Quoting: dubigrasuThere's a small box you need to untick for 16:9 resolutions.
I know, but it doesn't add more resolutions. What happens is that no matter what resolution I choose, and whether I choose fullscreen or not, it always switches the X server to a low resolution, then opens a window with a higher resolution and the game menu is only partially visible and cannot be used with the mouse.

Quoting: dubigrasuHave you tried to adjust the resolution from the safe mode?
yes, but in safe mode, it only offers windowed 4:3 resolutions up to 1280x1024 and I couldn't change the settings to fullscreen and my native monitor resolution and it would suck to play this game in windowed mode.

I hope that they not only release a Wine wrapper of their games once but also support them properly.

I bought Two Worlds and it worked well initially but after I needed to re-install it after a computer and Ubuntu upgrade, it no longer works because it starts up with a default resolution of 1600x1200, which is not supported by my monitor and leaves the computer in an unusable state.

Alien: Isolation – The Collection is currently rather cheap on the official Feral store

Quoting: MikeHow does Alien run on Linux? Haven't check yet...
It runs very well on my GeForce GTX 750Ti. It started up with low graphics settings after installation, but even after changing most settings to high, the performance is very decent.
