The Linux version of squad based Roguelike 'Steam Marines' has nearly become profitable
14 May 2018 at 11:09 pm UTC

Quote95% of the sales came from Windows users. This was despite Linux users arguing that lots would buy if a Linux version was made available.

This is a common theme it seems, yes lots argue for it, but come on, have a realistic expectation - it's not going to blow Windows out of the water regardless of how many argue for it.

I just wish I could get a laptop like this that wasn't 16:9 ratio. Sick of looking through a letterbox.

Oh... No...

I'm old enough to have lived through the advent of widely available internet and the hell-spawn it generated. Geocities and Angelfire pages. Screaming modems. Family members installing tons of toolbars in IE so the actual browser space was half-height. Gaudy colour themes in Windows. And that awful video format...

You don't need Valve for that. Supported however means that developers should maintain their games and address issues that can arise in Wine+dxvk when their games are used with them.

We do need them though, because there are a whole boatload of games that will run fine with Wine/DXVK, which developers absolutely won't be supporting and nor should we expect them to - especially with older games. Think about games like RAGE or Wolfenstein, or Skyrim - these typically run bloody well under Wine - if Valve offered actual support for installing these via Steam with Wine, then that would open up a whole new umm, ball-game. It might even open up the possibility of developers doing the support themselves once they see Valve in action with it.

Having Valve step in and up with official support would lend both Linux and SteamOS another level of credibility in gaming.

Quoting: elmapulFree Software = open source and with a free licence, free as in freedom not as in price.

I wish to hell that we could get everyone using the term "Libre Software" instead. Because quite frankly, "Free Software" doesn't convey "freedom" at all, and just confuses the fuck out of people new to it when you try to explain.

Libre =
QuoteIt denotes "the state of being free", as in "liberty" or "having freedom".

You know you've fucked up when you need to repeat "Think free as in freedom of speech, not free beer." ad infinitum.

Quoting: wvstolzingSpeaking of source ports, I'd really like this one to get some support on Linux: https://www.doomretro.com/
Although it's presented as a windows-only source port, it used to build & run very well on Linux, but since about a year ago I started getting all sorts of problems with sound; so I gave up, and went back to chocolate-doom.

The maintainer/author of that particular port is a through-and-through Windows fan. Won't touch anything else.
