Quoting: CyberwormThe term "boomer shooter" refers to the "30 year old boomer" meme who likes to drink Monster Energy Zero Ultra White and playing old shooters like Doom or Duke Nukem 3D. It's not directly related to Baby BoomersThe point is that 'boomer' isn't the right term to describe a 30yr old, unless you're diluting it to mean 'idk, older than 25, so basically half-dead or something lol'.

... I guess 'boomer' at this point has lost all connection to its original usage in 'baby boomer', to designate the post-WW II generation in the US.
The people who *made* Doom were all born in late 60s/early 70s -- definitely not 'baby boomers'. To be sure, it was 'baby boomers' who started the 'micro' revolution in the late 70s, & kicked off the games industry; but then again there were no free-movement/free-look 3d shooters back then.

Quoting: tuubiI think it's the ungodly amounts of licensed shovelware that got released on C64 & Amiga that casts a shadow on the genre in general -- that, and also the fact that while often very pretty, even the best of these 'western platformers' lacked the responsiveness of a Mega Man or a Mario. Also in terms of level design, as much as I adore the original Turrican games, they really don't hold a candle to Super Metroid.Quoting: M@GOidBut if you consider how bad most western platformers were, the bar wasn't too high tough. What are you talking about? Some decent to great western platformers (and series) I remember enjoying on my Amiga 500 in the early nineties are Zool, Superfrog, James Pond, Fire and Ice, Leander, Toki, Gods, Chuck Rock, Rick Dangerous, Shadow of the Beast, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, The Addams Family, Disney's Aladdin & Lion King... I must be forgetting a whole load. But you get the idea.

Quoting: PenglingIn Turkey Donald Duck/'Duck Tales'/Darkwing Duck were likewise the most popular Disney cartoons.Quoting: F.UltraAs a fun side note Mickey was never big over here and instead Donald was the big Disney character (and we have a Donald special on Christmas Eve every year).I was always fond of the expanded Disney Duck universe, myself. But, I'll mark myself out as an 80s/90s kid here by noting that Darkwing Duck was and still is my absolute favourite of those.

Seriously though, total appropriation (or even just clumsy plagiarism) with practices shifting their meaning is the name of the game when it comes to sacred traditions of all kinds.
(& to get a bit more pedantic, the apocalyptic preacher whose followers laid the foundations of what became the official religion of Rome was likely born a few years earlier than our '0 A.D.'; & the Gospels themselves hint towards Spring time for his birth — not that they contain much by way of factual info, apart from the note concerning the poor guy's execution as a political criminal.)

Quoting: PhlebiacYeah but the pagan celebrations were MIT-licensed, so they were free for the taking; and Christianity didn't have to contribute anything back.Quoting: DorritJesus was born 2023 years agoDefinitely not on December 25th, though. Can you say "co-opt the pagan celebrations"?

I'm seriously impressed by the art style. I wonder if this is a one-man enterprise -- if so, I'd be even more impressed. I think I'll get this one soon.

-- but yeah, NMS *without* the space exploration doesn't pique my interest either.
And as to the underdelivery of the original release of NMS: I'm pretty sure they had some kind of deal with Sony that hindered them from releasing the game labeled clearly as 'early access' -- because that's what it was, in the most honest usage of that term; but because the disclaimer was missing, people thought they were sold a lie, hence the backlash, and the bout of silence that followed the release.
So they didn't sell a lie, and *then* go on to fix it.

Quoting: ExpandingManAs a big fan of sci-fi and space this mostly just bums me out. As great as NMS has become, it still leaves much to be desired (ships could be way more interesting, ironically the procedural gen on most stuff is lackluster). Doing basically the same thing but minus all the cool stuff like spaceships and guns but with magic and dragons seems incredibly lame, especially since it's been absolutely done to death. The imagery (including the logo that shows up at the end) is pretty suggestive, IMHO, that this world is some kind of 'Atlas simulation' as well.

Quoting: AdutchmanIn 204, screens were 480p, screensharing did not exist, security was not really a designconsideration, VR was still science fiction and Linux desktop Linux was still very obscure. It's absolutely true that in 204, security wasn't really a design consideration -- and where did that leave us? Goths, Vandals, the Alamanni, and the Sassanids poured into the empire from all points of the compass. Wax tablets being limited to 480p was the least of our concerns back then.

I liked the *far more primitive* one on Game Boy Advance (GTA Advance) better though; on an emulator likewise. The only top-down GTA I actually played from start to finish.

Quoting: BlackBloodRumYeah I played that one on a PSP emulator.Quoting: Mountain ManThe Nintendo DS exclusive China Town Wars remains my all time favourite Grand Theft Auto. I keep hoping for an HD remaster, or remake, or even better, a sequel.DS Exclusive? This one was also available on PSP, iPhone and Android.
