OpenGL to be deprecated in the next macOS release, could mean interesting things for Linux gaming

Quoting: Mountain ManWe might think they're making dumb decisions, but Apple didn't become the richest company in the world by being stupid.
I didn't say they're making decisions against *their own* best interests; it's that they keep making decisions that screw consumers, and get away with it.

Nevertheless, I don't think their current success is the result of genius decisions beyond our comprehension either. Remember that in the beginning they were even against the idea of 3rd party apps. *Lots of factors* played into the growth of the mobile internet craze; a number of corporations -- those with plenty of luck -- got swept into positions they probably couldn't even dream of, much less strategize their way into, 10-12 years ago.

I still don't see how the current 'forced upgrade' path for the Mac line can be sustainable -- but they probably don't care if it blows either.

Quoting: FireStarWDoesn't this also mean for mac users that their back catalog of opengl games will be unable to be playable on new versions of macos? What a crazy decision.
'Crazy' is an understatement for how Apple's been abusing 'forced obsolescence' these past few years.

... and I can't fathom how their Mac (MacBook at least) sales are still on the rise. Haven't enough people discovered that a forced, arbitrary update can render their software unusable overnight?

In the past, they may have had good reasons to end support for compatibility layers that they had introduced after architecture changes (though even that's doubtful) -- but as of today, you can't even keep a web browser up to date on a Mac that's older than 5-6 years.

I have a 2007 Mac Mini that's perfectly adequate for the tasks it's assigned to -- but only because it runs Linux nowadays. With OS X 10.6 on it, it had been reduced to a paper weight essentially. (This model is notoriously difficult to get Linux working on, by the way [some odd quirk with the bootloader]; otherwise I would have switched much earlier.)

Gladiabots, the robot arena fighting game where you construct their AI is heading to Steam

Gladiabots? I wonder if there's a reference to Asimov's 'Gladia Delmarre/Solaria' hidden in that name. Probably not though.

Microsoft acquires GitHub for some loose change

I wonder if they'll address Linus's grievances. M$ is a member of the Linux Foundation after all.

By the way, check out his original comments on github -- the technical details go over my head, of course, but his quarrels with other people are entertaining as ever: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/pull/17#issuecomment-5654674 [External Link]

Edit: I mean, look at this:
Btw, Joseph, you're a quality example of why I detest the github
interface. For some reason, github has attracted people who have zero
taste, don't care about commit logs, and can't be bothered.

The fact that I have higher standards then makes people like you make
snarky comments, thinking that you are cool.

You're a moron.

The Mass Effect Trilogy maybe?
Hmmm... 'Pandemonium' represents the aftermath of ME3's ending pretty accurately.

There's an upcoming game (currently in early access) with the title "Angels Fall First". [link to steam page [External Link]] -- though I'm not sure if Feral's likely to announce early access indie titles on their radar.

There also exists a platformer called 'Pandemonium' from the mid-90s. I guess that's unlikely as well.

Am I missing something? That's just Paradise Lost, we knew that already.

I still don't see the connection from Paradise Lost to Dark Souls.
Don't know if that could be the link...

https://www.reddit.com/r/bloodborne/comments/3zhqsy/connections_between_bloodborne_and_paradise_lost/ [External Link]

Bloodborne is a "spiritual brother" to Dark Souls, from what I hear. In fact it seems it's in the same universe, but I never played. It's just comments I heard from players I know.

Edit: Found many other sources that makes the connection between Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Paradise Lost. "Dark Souls is a metaphor of life. Like a video game version of Paradise Lost." Along those lines...
I thought Bloodborne was exclusive to the Playstation.
Has this changed ?
It's an exclusive -- also the linked reddit post hardly documents a tangible connection. It's one person's association of a single phrase from Milton, with a theme in Bloodborne. It's sort of like finding a reference to 'ears', and 'hearing' in a poem, and concluding that the writers of Star Trek TNG must have had that poem as an inspiration in creating the Ferengi.

The painting in the hint is "Pandemonium" by John Martin [External Link]; it's a scene from Paradise Lost, which the quote also points towards.

I can't think of what this might be a hint towards. There's an early access game with the title "Angels Fall First". [link to steam page [External Link]]

Other than that, I don't think it's Doom 2016. Doom 2016's Hell is a parallel dimension that doesn't contain much by way of Christian imagery. I mean, the original Dooms had a little bit of it; but I don't remember seeing any inverted crosses or the like in Doom 2016.

What's also fun to see, is that it's being built with the open source Godot Engine.
I'm sure they're using some ImageMagick tools for their assets as well.

As to real Linux on 'smart' devices, there also exist projects such as these:

Pi Talk's kickstarter page [External Link]

zerophone [External Link]

The pitalk appears to have started reaching backers. I also remember people posting fully home made systems with GSM hats etc. on adafruit, from a couple of years back. This is precisely the kind of 'smartphone' I'd like to have; until then, I'm perfectly fine with not owning one.
