New content would be very welcome. I found this game to be very addictive. It has worked well for me on Linux Mint. Be sure to check the game resolution. I was playing low res for awhile before I realised I could bump it up.

I just want to thank the developers for making this available on Linux. I've been running it on Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya on two PCs. I'm getting a playable 20 fps using an ancient NVIDIA GT218 (GeForce 8400) on an Intel Core i7 870. I get 60 fps on my new GTX 1060 gaming laptop. It has been stable on both devices. The game is great, and I play every chance I can get!

Quoting: kalinIs it possible for someone who have twitter to answer to this tard and tell him that his game is unplayable under linux and this is the reason for smaller percentage under linux. I have the game and I cant play it because of lag or glitchesIt runs smoothly on my SteamOS PC: Intel Core i5 (Ivy Bridge), 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, Samsung Evo SSD. SteamOS is built on Debian, and I can exit to the Debian desktop. I have tried installing Rust on a stripped down version of Debian, but I failed to get it to run at all.

I play Rust maybe 6 hours per week. It works well on SteamOS. I have a long list of complaints, but I should probably focus first on why and how I play. I like to play solo on an empty server. I like to start out naked and alone in nature and work my way up to building shelter, growing food, and exploring the map. They wipe the servers frequently, so by the time I get bored, they wipe it again.
Recent developments have been good.
They finally implemented a system that rewards cooperation. You craft a tool, give it to a player, and you earn experience when they use the tool. It's too soon to tell if this will reduce the slaughter fest, but I'm hoping we continue moving in the direction of cooperation over murder.
Crafting the rock. You start out naked with a rock and a torch. In the past, if you lost the rock, you were pretty screwed. Now, they allow you to craft a rock cheaply by gathering a few resources laying around the map.
Stash. You can now craft a small storage sack that you can bury. It's completely hidden. I suggest putting a good portion of your valued items in stashes since it's likely that your home will be raided. If you are murdered, you can at least retrieve the basics from your stash, so you don't have to start with the rock and torch again.
Fish traps. Finally, you can catch fish. Craft and place a fish trap in a river. Put bait in the trap. A mushroom will do. You can also drink from the rivers now. I recommend drinking from the source up river to avoid getting sick.
Plant seeds to grow corn, hemp, and pumpkins.
If you have a problem playing a different skin color or gender, be aware that there are no customization options... In Rust, you play with what they give you, and you can't change it. It does not appear that they care to change that... ever.

I'd rather be surprised than aggravated. Better for the developers to keep their thoughts hush hush.

If I close my eyes and imagine doing a YouTube video getting Xbox users' reactions to a reasonably equipped Steam Machine, I'm not so sure that they would be ecstatic over the platform. However, as a PC enthusiast, the Steam Machine (and Steam OS) excites me. After a year or so in sales, it would be nice to know who is actually buying Steam Machines and how they are using them. Are they using the Steam Controller, an Xbox controller, or a mouse/keyboard? Who is getting the most from Steam Machines? How many people decided to load Windows on it? How many people turned their Steam Machine into a server of some kind?

People are buying Android phones for $450 and up. People are spending as much for doggy daycare as a car payment. Our backgrounds as PC enthusiasts probably contaminate our objectivity to an extent. What we know, and what we value, differs from others. To a strictly console person, they might just see it as a box. What Steam Machines really need is a marketing campaign that tells the people that this is the new and next big thing. Valve/Alienware/etc. needs to sponsor the professional gamers and provide steam machines for the pros to use and promote. Some big entity needs to award - provide incentive - pressure developers to port to Linux. How do we get a Blizzard to publish on Steam? Where we split hairs over hardware, maybe the console gamer splits hairs over titles?

For a PC enthusiast, you really can't go wrong by buying a Steam Machine. The ones I've seen are decent PCs, and you can operate whatever OS you want. I've been using SteamOS on my gaming desktop for a few months now. There are some quirks, but over time, I'm sure the platform will mature into something majestic. It's the one platform that's sure to outlive all other console platforms. In 10 years, SteamOS will still be here, but Xbox One will disappear just like the first Xbox (unless Microsoft changes their paradigm). It's going to take time for market growth.
