Creating security vulnerabilities is a great way to motivate your user-base to get off old code.

Impressive racing game DRAG gets a big driving-physics update
10 Jan 2021 at 5:10 am UTC

Quoting: Mountain ManWill definitely give this a look. I love the graphics, but the driving physics in previous versions was terrible with the cars having no grip and bouncing out of control after hitting the slightest bump.

Edit: The developers are getting there, but they still have some work to do. Cars seem to stick to the road a little better, so at least you can properly power slide, but they're still too light and prone to bouncing wildly out of control. They also have an absurdly wide turn radius making it nearly impossible to take tight corners without slowing to a crawl.
Also, when a real car's tire goes off an edge or over a hole, the suspension drops that tire very rapidly! In the trailer posted here, the tire gradually drops down. Not sure if that is to be forgiving because it's a game or what. Compression, rebound, and gravity work much faster IRL.

Here's a few of the Linux games we're excited to see through 2021

I feel like we're starting to see the negative impact of Steam's Proton. That is: Larger development studios are no longer building (or porting) Linux releases because they can get Linux buyers "for free" anyway. Linux gamers (myself included) will buy the Windows version and rely on a compatibility tool to play.

Simple GOG client for Linux 'Minigalaxy' has a small update out
10 Jan 2021 at 4:05 am UTC

- Kept installers are now stored in ~/.cache/minigalaxy/download

I do not like this change. FYI to anyone else who doesn't, the developer explained a workaround [External Link] and also said they're going to change the behavior in the next feature release.

This is nice news for the sorry suckers that still use Nvidia GPU's for Linux gaming.

Getting Linux running properly on Apple M1 Silicon has begun with Asahi Linux

I'm not too excited about this project right now, but I can imagine the use-case of keeping unsupported Apple hardware usable. It's not a need of mine now or in the near future, but maybe it will be far off, and then I'll be glad this work was done.

The Linux distribution I was most thankful for in 2020 - EndeavourOS
6 Jan 2021 at 7:13 pm UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: oldrocker99I tried EndeavourOS, and it's too close to vanilla Arch for me (I don't like spending a long time to install packages);
Not arguing your preferences here, but how are the Manjaro updates faster than Arch? I use both systems and I always use the same `sudo pacman -Syu` for each. I think Manjaro has fewer mirrors too. Maybe you mean the frequency of updates? That is completely controlled by the user. Just not sure what would be slower.

EDIT: Oh, I think I understand now that you mean the default packages that come with Manjaro versus vanilla Arch where you have to find them all and install them yourself... so the getting-up-and-running aspect of installing the system, not maintenance like I was thinking.

Corsair open source driver and UI 'ckb-next' expands in the latest release

Quoting: elmapul...its a shame that we have to support that feature because some gamers think its cool and would refuse to use our system if we didnt support it....
What? Who is we? You including yourself? How is this a shame? You want Linux to cater only to your preferences? Are you from another planet? Maybe switch to Apple. Their ecosystem is more in line with what you're saying.

For me, the two new ckb-next features that are most exciting:
- Different profiles depending on application focus
- Pattern looping while holding a key

The best Linux distros for gaming in 2021
19 Dec 2020 at 5:39 am UTC Likes: 1

I do not recommend Ubuntu for new users. I disagree with that. Surprised how much of a "mic drop" tone the article had about it. Of course people are going to argue. Pop! would probably alright. My first choice for newbs is Mint with two thumbs up. Tech savvy person? Manjaro with a thumb and a half up.

I read nearly all comments up to this point and there were a lot of explanations given, so I don't need to repeat them. I hearted the ones I liked. Whatever distros you may convince your normies to try out, it's on you to help them out.
