Steam Survey for February 2026 shows a big swing to Simplified Chinese

Since the Chinese are probably using pirated versions of Windows, what's stopping them from using something Kylin? I'm guessing it is that darn anti-cheat not working on Linux. Or the Chinese don't care.

GOG has a new owner and they've been panhandling people for this Patrons program. Sadly, that money isn't going to artists.

I know this is a Linux gaming site, but DXMT for Wine gaming on macOS is a big thing. I believe Crossover creates it and should be similar to DXVK for Linux. DXMT is DirectX to Metal like DXVK is DirectX to Vulkan. It has to be Metal on macOS unfortunately as the OS doesn't support Vulkan out of the box.
Steam Frame and Steam Machine will be another good boost for Flatpaks and desktop Linux overall too

There have been these leaks from a random site that all of the YouTubers are referencing regarding the leaked Steam Machine price. Some are saying $950 for the 512 GB model and up to $1100 for the 2 TB model. Of course these are not official, but we are in a RAM crisis.
What I never liked about Valve was their distribution method of only selling the hardware on Steam. No Amazon, no Best Buy, and no Walmart. It would be awesome if I could see a Steam Machine (Steam Deck too!) kiosk at Target so people know it exits. Heck, maybe the boxes for the Steam Machine could advertise that you can play thousands and thousands of games and the latest titles that come out next to Xbox and Playstation.
But they won't. They will instead tailor to the Gen-X/Millennial Steam user with a huge library and disposable income instead of bringing in new blood. This forces a user to randomly create a Steam account and THEN buy a Steam Machine vs buying a Steam Machine on Amazon or Best Buy and then they get the Steam account.

GOG now ask for donations when you buy games

If they need to save money, they could always do layoffs and replace with AI. Like how things are in the US basically.
There shouldn’t be a donation of a company that makes money off a product and has employees. Polish salaries are already pretty low.

Ubuntu 25.04 upgrades halted due to Kubuntu users getting a broken desktop

This happened twice to me. First time was a 24.10 to 25.04 beta upgrade on my main machine and recently a 24.10 to final 25.04 on a family machine. Each time when I logged in, I got this broken login screen.
I ended up fixing it by selecting Advanced Options in GRUB and then Recovery for the recent kernel. I enabled Networking and then went to the Root prompt and ran:
After that (I am on ethernet), I restarted the machine and worked.

2K Launcher is finally no more - that's at least one publisher making things better for gamers

Having to launch an additional launcher to play a game on Steam (a launcher) is silly. While some companies like 2K are backing off, Sony is being more aggressive with theirs. It would be nice if we could optionally login to Sony/EA/Ubisoft through the native ingame menu for multiplayer instead of running another Electron app in the background.

I think this really screwed Sony over with Helldivers 2 and started its downfall when it locked out international players. Sony is just another greedy company who wants to inflate their PSN numbers to meet some shareholder nonsense.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceLike others this is a hard pass for me. I refuse to bend the knee to PSN, Microsoft accounts, Uplay, EA, or any other account linking. I barely even buy from Steam these days. Plenty of games on GOG and Itch.io that interest me.There are Sony released games on GOG (God of War, Days Gone, etc), but I am guessing that will stop now due to Sony forcing their secondary PSN account for DRM on PC games going forward. For a single player game, this makes no sense to force PSN and it should always be optional for multiplayer games.

Couple of things to digest here. The switch from SteamOS to Windows does suck and I'm sure Microsoft had a hand in it. I have a feeling that they are currently "tolerating" gaming on Linux since the market share is so low. If Linux market share were to go up, you would guarantee that Microsoft would go out of their way to stop the growth.
In China, they do have Kylin and Ubuntu Kylin as options. You would think that China would want their population to use a CCP sanctioned operating system vs the western based Windows. Many of these communist countries would love to remove their dependence on the west so they could have shipped a Kylin based OS for their Chinese customers and still use SteamOS or a custom Ubuntu for western.
