Roms are a great tool for this two objectives.

A great exemple is archive.org for instance; they got huge archives of arcade cabinet roms of the previous century.

I really love the effort that people can put to develop open source gaming engine recreation or emulators.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong but, last time I checked, OpenMW's savegame support wasn't 100% set in stone.

So, it's probably best to wait a little until the engine is ready for everyday use.
