Steam Deck OLED is just pure joy - the definitive Steam Deck

In fairness, I don't take out those sorts of contracts either, and it absolutely is because I'm frugal. I buy my phones outright immediately, and then just use a pay-as-you-go style SIM card. I don't spend a lot on my phones either, because they're usually on silent (woops, I forgot to take silent off ) over the other side of the room. Unfortunately this does mean I miss a few calls, and don't respond to texts quickly.

Quoting: Purple Library Guy:grin:Quoting: BlackBloodRumPlus, I'm trying to reduce my overall e-waste in general (this is why I stopped buying mainstream phones, and am now looking to more repairable devices).Ah, yes, me too. That's why I've never yet acquired a cell phone--not because I'm a skinflint who refuses to pay $50 Cdn./month for a device that will let people bother me when I'm alone. Nope, it's the e-waste thing. For sure.

Regarding e-waste, in my defence - my e-waste pile is in my own home. I quite literally have a computer in a cupboard behind me that has a Pentium II CPU in it that hasn't been powered on for years.

Quoting: damarrinThen really, for you it makes a lot more sense. That is, in your case it's something worthwhile :grin:Quoting: BlackBloodRumBut admittedly my current deck still sits in its case a lot. It's the opposite for me. I play everything on the Steam Deck, including all my PS5 games with Chiaki. The console isn't even connected to the TV any more, I just turn it on with the SD and then put it back to sleep.
As for e-waste, yes, that's a very valid point. Luckily, I have a very good use for my current LCD Deck so I don't feel like I'm adding to the huge waste pile just yet.

Quoting: LoftyNot sure if it was mentioned, but they also changed the speaker profile so you can get more volume out of it before clipping.Nice! The speakers sounded a little weak when I briefly tried them a long time ago. However, I always use headphones so beyond initial testing I haven't used/heard them since.

But, the Deck does have its use, for example when travelling or I just want to chill somewhere other than my computer. But for that, my current deck works just fine.
Fan noise, well this has never been a problem for me with pretty much any device. Modern fans are way quieter than how they used to be, so honestly all fans seem quiet to me.
In terms of battery life, I got pretty good at tuning both the games and the steam decks settings to extend battery life
Plus, I'm trying to reduce my overall e-waste in general (this is why I stopped buying mainstream phones, and am now looking to more repairable devices). But! I get to say I have the OG deck complete with pull strap in the case to lift it out with!

Quoting: damarrinI get that totally. I mean, if the new features will benefit you a lot then it's certainly worth it. But admittedly my current deck still sits in its case a lot. I somehow, still prefer playing at a desktop PC with a big screen, especially for games like Cyberpunk 2077.... which reminds me I need to check something related to that game.Quoting: BlackBloodRumIt sounds good but.. replace my existing, fully working Steam Deck (LCD) good? I'm not convinced at this point. :unsure:Yeah, this was my take until some 10 minutes ago. But! And it's a big butt. Some of the games I play, there are just a few fps I'm missing. The new one fixes that. Then there's HDR and battery life and fan noise. It's just such a compelling upgrade.
I think I'll wait for the Steam Deck 2
It's absolutely right that SD should have been this way from the beginning, but ofc Valve were still testing the waters, never made this kind of hardware before, unsure of how it was going to sell, trying to keep costs to a minimum while still putting out a great product (and, let's face it, it was a great product already).
So yeah, it looks like they deserve all of my money.

It's kind of cool to think that, a Linux gaming device is popular enough for scalpers to see interest in scalping it
That's not saying that I support nor condone scalpers. It's just kind of cool to think that the device is popular enough for this to even be a thing.
Meanwhile as a Linux user, there's me renewing my FSF and LWN subscriptions today, instead of buying the new Linux device. But in my defence I did pre-order the original device.

Denuvo expects you to have an active internet connection to verify they still own you, something which a portable device such as the Deck may come not to have. It would suck to install the game, then leave home. Not realising the game required further checks via internet, which your device may not be able to do.

Quoting: GuestIndeed. Additionally, I kind of feel Deck and Denuvo are inherently incompatible. Not from a software point of view, but rather a usage.Quoting: BlackBloodRumIt's worth noting that "Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name" and "Persona 5 Tactica" both contain Denuvo :smile:grrrrr Denuvo  thanks for the head up, when playing a game with denuvo, you gotta be extra careful switching proton versions or editing files or adding files inside the game folder, it could trigger a 24 hours timeout.
