The SMACH Z gaming handheld has switched to AMD Ryzen & Vega, pre-orders start soon

Quoting: ShmerlWell, show me a device that can run proper Wayland compositor without libhybris hacks, and I'd agree. So far Librem 5 didn't come out.
Why do you need Wayland for playing games on an Android mobile device? Or have you accidentally quoted the wrong person?

Quoting: ShmerlOS should not be core part of the hardware. But as long as hardware has open drivers - Linux would run there. AMD APU is already a plus there (Mesa and all). What about controller drivers? Will they be open?
That's not quite what I meant. Of course is software not part of the hardware. Hm. Why do you suggest that Linux would only run if all drivers are open? Linux runs just fine with closed source drivers. I mean, it's cool if the drivers are open, but I don't see why running Linux would require that?

Quoting: CreakBeing able to play good 'ol SNES games on that could be very fun!

EDIT: Also, there is a display port, so maybe the possibility to plug it to the TV?
You can play SNES games and other retro games on pretty much any Android device. Just get yourself a bluetooth gamepad. Most smartphones can be connected to TVs also. No need for 900 bucks for doing that.

Quoting: ShmerlWhy would you? The whole point is to have a Linux handheld computer. What it can run is already secondary ;)
This doesn't strike me as something where Linux is the core part of the thing. For me, it sounds like they just mention Linux because its a kinda popular thing for people to give money in advance.

The Witcher 3 and Alien Isolation on a handheld for 900 bucks. This is ridiculous. Just as the logo and sound logo is.

Ion Maiden, a new 3D Realms FPS has launched in Early Access with Linux support

Quoting: HamishI kind of have to ask what more could you possibly expect from a company such as Apogee/3D Realms that was founded more than thirty years ago?
The same I expect from any developer and publisher: Care for games. If someone would want me to try out their game, they would have to tell me more than "This company name is very popular and exists for 30 years! That way more then the development of one of our titles!" and that this game is as good as "the good times in the 90'ies!".

What I see in the video is quite generic gameplay. The company that pioneered giving away the first episode for free now wants money up front for a game with so little info - and the promise that the main game will be ready in 6 months - but maybe more.

In short: I expect to be better informed before pre-ordering this title.

Quoting: HamishIf anyone is entitled to rip off 3D Realms, it is 3D Realms. ;)
There are so many companies that still have their name, but not much otherwise. What are the companies names worth after being officially bought by EA. What changes when the investors behind a name change?

Just slapping a name on it and state "It's good!" isn't cutting it for me. The good old "We are working closely with (insert gaming veteran)!" is also more often than not just marketing.

I think I wait how this turns out after it is released.

Quoting: MblackwellMyself and the rest of the developers are huge classic FPS fans and long time members of the BUILD/Duke and Doom modding communities and have put in years of effort toward this release. I hope that you will give it a chance, even with your reservations.
Maybe a better trailer would help. Apart from stating that other games are bad and this game is not, I just see retro graphics without much that could catch the eye. What makes the game good and different from others? "Real Retro" means completely different things for different people. Maybe elaborate on that a bit in a trailer. I'm sure there is more to show without revealing too much of the main story campaign that's not yet available.

And as I said, the Early Access definition doesn't make a lot of sense to me. It's more like a share ware episode, but you have to pay the full price for it instead of testing it for free.

Quoting: HamishI for one am definitely game for another 2.5D sprite based shooter. They look and play fundamentally differently to true 3D FPS games
What makes the gameplay different for 2D-Raycasters (Doom/DN3D) in comparison to polygon based shooters (Quake/Doom 3/etc...)? You have some restrictions while designing levels for Raycasters, but apart from that, I don't see why the render technique would interfere with the game design.

Apart from the name "3D Realms" there is nothing interesting here. Sounds like a cash grab with weird definitions what Early Access means.

The question behind this game is so heavily silly... and I have no idea why I'm interested in the answer. But it has a lot of Synthwave and all that stuff, maybe that's why.
