Valve are already pushing ahead with updates to Steam Play's Proton with a beta channel

Pardon me stating the obvious, but here it goes: if a game has an alternative, native client available, use that instead of running the game through Proton. Take Descent 1 and 2 for example, they both run quite flawlessly with Proton, but that just uses Wine to fire up a Windows Dosbox to finally run the game. And that limits you to the features that were in the original release.

To make the game count as a Linux purchase, this is the way to go, at least for the first few hours. But if you already owned the game for a long time, only download/install the game using Proton, then copy over Ports like DX-Rebirth to enable *lots* of improvements compared to the original version.

Quoting: OrkultusSo far the games that i have gotten to work are. Darksiders 1 (Menu is blacked out), but if you listen for the menu sounds when you hover your mouse over them, and select them just right, it will load into the game which is fully playable.
I had the black main menu too, but that wasn't the only flaw. There was no HUD other than the minimap, I couldn't see the popups that appear when you find something new for the first time and there was no ingame menu.

I was able to play the game for about half an hour, defeating the first boss and going through several level transitions, but I had to tab out of the game and kill it, as I could not save and quit from within.

On the other hand, Hot Lava runs rather flawlessly for me. Only thing missing is the intro movie, otherwise it's absolutely smooth.

I'm going to increase the lead of the Linux download counter over the Mac one :)

EXAPUNKS from Zachtronics is now out in Early Access

It's got cut scenes and no harsh restrictions on lines of code per module, while the language is a bit more complex than TIS-100. So it's somewhere in between Opus Magnum, TIS-100 and Shenzen I/O.

Also: it is amazing how fast Zachtronics is shaping the programming puzzles into new interesting forms. They carved their niche and rule supreme.

Facepunch are no longer selling the Linux version of the survival game Rust (updated)

I was interested in Rust years ago. But I read about toxic players ruining the fun in game repeatedly, so I never bothered to actually buy the game or join any giveaways. Those toxic players cannot be concentrated on Linux only, there are a lot of idiots on other platforms as well. And as far as I understand Rust used cross platform play, so judging by the percentage of Linux gamers there have to be lots of bad apples in the Windows users group.

And I don't believe Linux users are more vocal than users of other platforms in general. But I do believe that lack of QA leads to more pain for those users which fuels the flames. If your product has different quality on different platforms, those users will sound off accordingly. Ask developers with great Linux support if they think of us as toxic and they will tell you otherwise.

It's time to begin your descent, as the six-degree-of-freedom shooter 'Overload' is now out

This one is a real gem! It's got the solid singleplayer with lots of exploration as well as the frantic multi player action and even includes LAN play. It also features challenge modes where the bots or auto-ops continuously spawn and grind you down, it is really fun to play.

In my opinion they nailed the scale, the speed, the geometry, the pickups, the AI and the outlines to differentiate the various enemy types.

Awesome title overall!

I just hope I will be able to run the editor as well, couldn't get Unity3D to start on my machine yet after trying about two times a year. Seeing Mike and Luke demo putting together cubes is a trip down memory lane.

I keep my fingers crossed for being able to build non euclidean spaces like I did 20 years ago for all the players that think 6doF is not disorienting enough already :)

Yes, but I suppose we won't be able to build 4D levels in Unity like we were able to do in Devil. I loved plugging cubes in ways to disorient people with impossible geometry.

Quoting: GuestSeriously? I loved playing Descent 2 with a borrowed Microsoft Sidewinder joystick, oh so many years ago. I would be very interested to try Overload with two sticks, even if my wife would divorce me for buying them.
I just dusted off my Logitech Flightstick and fired up the early access build of Overload. Both controllers were identified without me having to hop through any hoops. They both get reported on top of the controller config screen and you can assign all options freely among both controllers. Overload even displays the correct name of the button or axis and in the case of the Xbox controller even the correct icons.

I just finished the training mission with the Xbox controller in my left hand and the flightstick in the right :D
