Wayland driver for Wine is getting closer
14 Mar 2023 at 5:49 pm UTC
- Things like not saving window size and placement when reopening a previously used application seem much better now.
- I use things like double click on top bar to switch between normal and maximized windows and that feature was not present for the longest time on Wayland. Now the feature exists, but its broken with Chromium.. Sometimes it works straight away other times i can click 20 times in a row before it recognises.
- On this test of Wayland, Spotify doesn't appear to launch at all.
- Sometimes launching terminal, settings and various other apps results in a loading icon that continues long after the app has opened.
These are things that I noticed just in a few minutes of using Gnome on Wayland.. I never last more than a few hours because I run into further issues the longer I stay on Wayland and yes they might not be major issues, but it feels an incomplete and very rough experience for me. As somebody who used to work in QA I tend to pick up on issues most people wouldn't even be aware of or care about.

Quoting: jibsaramnimI have AMD's Vega 56. No issues with graphics drivers on wayland exactly, they just haven't correctly matched the features that already exist on X.. There are just weird glitches that annoy me. To be fair I've just switched to Wayland again and it seems they have fixed some of the issues I was having.Quoting: lejimsterI keep trying to switch over to Wayland, but there is always a few quirks on gnome that wind me up and put me off using it full timeInteresting, do you happen to have NVidia hardware? I've been using GNOME on Wayland full-time for the past three years and have not once had an issue with it that was caused by Wayland -- it's been rock solid overall actually. It's unfortunate to hear you're having issues though, it'd be nice if the experience was as smooth for you as it has been for me.

No true next-gen Steam Deck for 'a few years' Valve say

Makes a lot of sense. I knew I wouldn't use the Steam Deck as my primary device, but it's a nice thing to have and during the summer I plan to take it with me on holiday. I got mine more to support Valve's linux development. The amount of games I can play now is astounding. The only slight disappointment is the developers using anti-cheat as an excuse to block us still (as if all Linux users are elite hacking cheaters ). Which is why I keep hoping the Deck becomes big enough where they can't ignore us any longer.

Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal II: The Awakening.. I didn't realise these were both DX8. I'm pretty sure 2004 has a DX9 renderer (ahh, DX9 was added in an update). It might be worth checking out Unreal II with d8vk as it was awful the last time I tried to play it through wine.

I keep trying to switch over to Wayland, but there is always a few quirks on gnome that wind me up and put me off using it full time, I really should test KDE as it's probably just gnome issues. Anyway, I wonder if this will have any benefits over gamescope? Even less latency? I was planning to do some testing with gamescope as it works so well on the steam deck but I haven't got around to it yet. Does anyone here run gamescope on their PC?
Trackmania heads to Steam and the devs say it's playable on Steam Deck

I have been playing Trackmania United on and off since it's launch in 2008. Theres still a good community of players thanks to the free version of the game Trackmania Nations Forever that brings people in. It didn't always work perfectly with wine because of problems with audio (which have since been fixed), but in the last couple of years I got back into playing it and have sunk 1,400 hours into it

The alt+tab bug fix for me was the most important. Every time I upgrade Gnome something breaks and I tried and failed to downgrade gnome so I was stuck with the alt+tab bug. Every time I alt+tab'd out of a game I was screwed. I would have to force quit the game and relaunch.
I generally enjoy my gnome setup, I like the workflow. But the lack of stability that breaks user extensions is extremely frustrating.

I stopped tinkering with my RGB not long after building my PC a few years back as I would have to boot into Windows to configure it every time. I did look into OpenRGB and something else the other year, but I don't believe my mobo was supported at that point.
I personally like static colours as they're less distracting, but I always wondered about having custom light profiles for playing music or when you are watching a movie.

Couldn't believe it when I saw the size of the update being downloaded the other day. Its one of the games I meant to play, but when I first got it, Linux compat was buggy. I should have played I when it was stable. I guess I have to wait some more now.
We may get a Steam Controller 2, plus fun updates coming to Steam Deck

I had to repair my original steam controller, but it got to the point where it was too beat up and not worth my time, so I bought another one in good condition off ebay only the other month. I hope a steam controller 2 comes out before I destroy this one.

I have physical copies of all those Unreal games, back from a time when I was a fan of Epic games. They were good times. Couldn't care less these days.
