Ubisoft think gamers need to get comfortable with not owning games

Rocksmith Plus (Ubisoft's newer subscription based guitar learning product) is inferior to Rocksmith 2014 (which was a 1-time purchase albeit with an absurd amount of purchaseable DLC). I'll continue feeling comfortable owning Rocksmith 2014.

Movies don't exactly benefit from the subscription model either. Just earlier today, I watched John Wick on Netflix. Parts of the movie are in Russian, but you don't get the foreign language only subtitle option with Netflix. Either the subtitles are totally on or totally off. I don't need subtitles for English or ambient noises.

New update for Dota 2 might pull me back in, with new reporting and matchmaking

Quoting: 14These changes sound really good, really promising. I have to assume the real-time reaction to reporting must be AI empowered. I just can't imagine an employee staring at a screen, sweat running down their face, trying to cast judgment on as many reports as possible per minute.
There's a lot between AI and humans, though. Like, algorithms.
Sure. What's your point though?
Much of the judgment for griefing/cheating has been outsourced to the players themselves (the ones with good behavior scores anyway). The "overwatch" system takes cut replays of the reported players, containing markers in the timeline where they have been reported, and sends it to multiple players for review. The replays for the guilty cheaters often contain dozens of markers placed by algorithms (normally players are limited to no more than 3 reports in a game). The system isn't perfect, but it does work pretty well and does lessen the burden on the developers. I've noticed a lot less griefing/scripting in my games since they've implemented it a couple years ago.

Shader cache downloads being a nuisance? Valve may have solved it

Really glad they made an effort to solve this... For the last month or so, Dota 2 was re-downloading the entire shader cache every day (between 600 and 800mb). Today it only downloaded 129kb. Much better!

Humble has a pretty good Game Development book bundle

Quoting: CrendgrimPlease do note that Packt books apparently very often lack in quality.
Thanks for the heads up. I decided to do some more investigating on the individual who wrote created the Blender character tutorial. They had a youtube account up with a small number of tutorials for Blender. Those tutorials did not have screencast keys enabled, and half the tutorial work depended on usage of textures from a pay-for-licenses website.

I ultimately decided not to purchase this bundle.

Perfect! I've been browsing youtube for Blender tutorials on character modeling/animation lately. I may just pick this bundle up for another one of those. Also... the Godot Projects book is for Godot 3.0 :)

Dota 2 has a new hero called Grimstroke available now, another called Mars coming later

Eight years of multi-million dollar tournaments with The International that have seen a 100% male playerbase. Gender has no effect on ability to play video games. Yet, there seems to be an issue with too many boys/men in their discovery that they are playing with a female online. Dota 2 is a highly competitive team game which benefits greatly from proper communication with your teammates. Microphone usage does have its advantages here. More often than not, when a female makes her presence known with a microphone, one or more of their male teammates instantly replies with some perverted garbage. The constant abuse can make it more difficult for a female player to find teammates to play with.

Regardless, I have high hopes that the ladies will one year claim the Aegis of Champions (trophy for winning The International). This year's TI featured a segment that highlights a tournament in Brazil which gives female players a safe space to compete without threat of harassment: Rainha de Copas (video) [External Link] . Go ladies!

EDIT: Props to Gobo for getting the point out before I finished writing, but the issue at hand is so widespread that perhaps it needs to be said more than once.

Valve's digital card game 'Artifact' to release November 28th with Linux support

I was originally interested in this, as a Dota 2 player who can occasionally enjoy a card game. For it to be based on Dota and not be free-to-play is a deal breaker though. I'd rather spend money on Dota 2 itself (which is nervously approaching the possibility of not having as big a prize pool for the The International tournament this year versus last year - game might be on the decline).
