A note on using Steam Play Proton and counting the sales for Linux (updated)
14 Feb 2020 at 9:49 am UTC

So if we really want Windows games straight from the developers, to play from release day one we who are playing their games through Proton should be getting in contact with the developers, to say hey we are able to play your game here in Linux, with better performance than in Windows. Any chance you could add some Vulkan to the code so we can have it natively? Then leave them names of Linux Porters Feral Interactive for instance. We as players of these games should be doing something too and not just leaving it to the likes of Steam, as they are working so hard already making Proton work with every game under the sun. The question is though. Would developers actually listen and take note to what Joe Bloggs has to say and ask?? But this was the whole idea of Proton anyway, however it was going to show to developers, being played on Linux?

I did not know that, but they still have to get permissions obviously? Would be great if they could get CAPCOM and RockStar.
They do need to get permissions, the source code, and maybe a little help to get it all up (maybe stuff is missing to get the game together or something). But I still wonder why not more companies do that, given it's very little to no financial risc for them.
I literally thought that to get companies to port their games, that the porting companies had to jump through hoops and have loads of meetings, persuading the said companies. Instead it's a case of the porters paying for the rights and the scripts, with no payout from the actual game company. But like you say if something is missing in the code or it's going to be a nightmare to port, plus money spent on time and staff to rewrite code?? But that's where Vulcan comes in, to surely make the port easier? No doubt they have to get permissions again to add Vulcan in the first place? Maybe I'll ask Feral Interactive on that one.

All I know is that Feral Interactive are really good at porting games and it would be great if they could get RE2, RE3, RE7 GTA5 though that is a massive game and it would be a really big download.

There are some blooming clever people out there, as I can play Resident Evil 2 remake without it crashing out. I just wish the instructions to get it going were clearer, as they were actually wrong on a few things and after pulling my hair out, then thinking outside the box, it all came together. I'm someone who never gives up and will keep trying especially where Linux is concerned. I will do a video on how to get it running and yes you could use Glorious Egg Roll but you still have to get MF-Plat from Windows 7 and it needs to be the correct version, as GE has taken all of that out of their Proton scripts. Resident Evil 7 does nothing but crash on the intro movie after pressing start which is a shame. Proton has come along way though, just wish there was a way for WINE to legally have MF-Plat, but as it stands it's owned by Microsoft, even though Winders 7 has gone End Of Life.

The thing is though I would love to see RE2 native, as suffering from lip sync problems through Proton. Though I did read that it does on Winders as well.

Resident Evil 3 Remake and Dragon Ball FighterZ on Linux would be awesome.
How do you persuade these companies to even consider Linux? Square Enix shocked me when they teamed up with Feral Interactive in the first place giving us Life Is Strange and the Tomb Raider serials. No doubt it takes months of meetings, possibly begging in there somewhere too??
The only one running with the financial risk of the Linux porting is Feral; they buy the publishing rights for Linux and Mac and pay for the porting work.

What you have to remember with game titles such as GTA5, Resident Evil 2 are two totally different Authors altogether and in the real world CAPCOM and RockStar don't whether they will in the future would be nice, but at this moment in time, they don't support Linux or Open Source and to persuade a gaming developer, to see the benefits in actually bringing or porting over to Linux, must be one of the hardest things in the world. I too would like to see Resident Evil 2 instead of having to use a Proton hack, but the reality is it ain't going to happen. Unless we somehow persuade CAPCOM and for GTA5 RockStar. :)

I know I should of waited, but needed to play this game and yes it works in Proton, but so did Shadow Of The Tomb Raider. I know for a fact that this game will run flawlessly, because Feral Interactive do fantastic ports and I'm just so glad that there are still porters out there, who put their heart and soul into making it possible for us Linux gamers to play AAA games. Plus the love Square Enix has for Linux and for Feral Interactive. The whole idea of Proton is to say hey developers we can play your games here in Linux too, so please developers put some Vulcan in your code and make it so we can experience your games here in Linux. The problem being is market share and in a way I'm glad Linux is how it is, otherwise if the world suddenly moved to Linux on the desktop, we will probably end up having more and more security problems, as in Attacks like Winders does. I have not yet completed this game of LIS2 and I don't think it is a waste of time of Feral, as it's another AAA title for us to enjoy and add to the collection. I'm looking forward to next year to see what Feral are going to port next. The hardest thing to be a porter must be finding a Developer who would like their games ported in the first place? Just wish that CAPCOM would trust a Linux Port of their games, but know in my heart that, that will never ever happen, unless for some strange reason, anyone or someone or even something can prove me wrong? :D

I still use version 21.0.2 simply because the newer versions do not have the system tray icon with the red light to show whether you're recording or streaming. The 21.0.2 version does and when I've used newer versions, it's not there and have to keep opening home folder to make sure it is recording. I use keyboard shortcuts to get it recording or streaming. In the picture below of my Peppermint Desktop you can clearly see the system tray icon with it's red light on. Weird why they got rid of it in later versions, or whenever I use later versions it ain't there.

Google Stadia is out now for early adopters, well a few anyway
21 Nov 2019 at 3:10 pm UTC

Obviously for smaller screens then, as in mobiles? The lag is because it is trying to produce a bigger picture obviously. Wonder if the lag would happen if you streamed it using lower resolution? Why would you want 4K anyway? 4x 1080 that's a lot of data to stream down and back up when you move on screen. Still give Stadia a year or six and hopefully they will have it sorted.:D

Google reveal Stadia will only have 12 games available at launch, more later in the year
18 Nov 2019 at 3:53 am UTC

What a waste of time, having to pay for the service, having to connect using your phone. I hate trying to stream via Wireless it don't work out properly for me, hence why I prefer to be fully wired in. Why release Stadia if it ain't even finished? It's like trying to bury a corpse when the hole is not big enough for the coffin. OK so maybe just maybe they wanted to show off what they have built already, but I can see loads of bug reporting on the horizon. I'm happy with Steam at least I know it works on whatever Linux OS I choose and if there is a problem with a game I know that Steam will fix the problem straight away.
