It's so heartening to see Feral stick with porting for us through all the changes that are taking place in the Linux and wider PC platform. Proton, Stadia etc are all disruptive to their business model but the proof is in the pudding, it's still worth porting the odd big game.

Thanks Feral!

You may want to hold off on Linux Kernel 5.3 and systemd 243 if you use a gamepad

Quoting: FaalhaasThis new systemd messed me up as well. I have to do a sudo modprobe uinput to get the Steam Controller working in-game.

Even after that, some games did not detect my buttons, so I even reinstalled the OS. Now it's working with modprobe.

Was one of those games Rocket League by any chance? The modprobe command didn't seem to do anything to get my steam controller working again.

There's not many websites I check every day, but GOL is one of them!

Big congrats to the GOL team on a wonderful resource for Linux gamers and the wider community.

Steam's top releases of May show why Steam Play is needed for Linux

Quoting: GuestIt's been almost a year since Proton came out (August 2018).
Where is this fabled growth in market share? Did we even reach 1% of Steam users?

Well, it certainly wasn't growing before Proton, and the AAA ports that had been a feature of the Steam Machine days had long since dried up (discounting Aspyr and Feral of course).

We're holding steady over the last few months, and the lack of increase can be explained by reading this article.

Why would vast numbers of Windows users switch when only a tiny fraction of new games work OOTB?

That's why improvements in Wine/Proton/EAC compatibility are so important. Once gaming on Linux isn't as much of a sacrifice, there'll be less barrier to switching for those who'd rather be on Linux but for their games.

Valve's card game Artifact seems to be dying off and fairly quickly too

I'm sad about this. My time with the game has been a lot of fun, and IMHO you get $19.99 of content without having to buy any further packs or spend money on the marketplace.

I read a comment about this yesterday that said basically: this game isn't for anyone.

Dota players don't want it, it's a different genre.

Hearthstone/Gwent players don't want it, there's a price to entry and you can't grind for cards.

Magic players don't want it, it's not the original and the best.

Valve fans don't want it, they want <insert beloved IP 3 here>.

I agree that the launch and marketing could have been handled better, emphasising the buying of specific cards you want and not having to grind might have helped, as would have more prominently mentioning the refund "policy" up front. It all seems to have left a sour taste in people's mouths.

I think it will require a drastic reworking to make it F2P, as the business model seems to have been developed to avoid this, but I don't know what else will drive player numbers back up.

Add me on steam if you want to play sometime :)

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2018, an end of year review
19 December 2018 at 5:32 pm UTC Likes: 3

2018, when I moved into a new house and set up our entire tech tree with open source from top to bottom, desktop, laptop, tablet, HTPC, homelab, phone.

On the gaming side there is so much fun to be had on Linux (eg. native games, SteamPlay, and emulators) that if you don't want to be on Windows, you don't need to be. And it's all an order of magnitude easier and more elegant than it used to be, thanks to the efforts of too many contributors to name.

Merry Christmas all. Thanks for another great year of Linux gaming coverage, Liam.

Feral Interactive are teasing another Linux port

Quoting: LeopardDivinity OS 2 is getting a Mac port from a different company so that's not it. Also they said there will be no Linux version.

My recollection was they said they were concentrating on Windows and would look at other platforms after release. Consoles have come, Mac is coming, but haven't heard anything from them re Linux explicitly since then (which was admittedly a while ago now), unless something slipped my notice.

I wonder if Liam has heard anything from Larian of late...?
