great, what can we help with?

'Factorio' is another game that was being hit by key scammers
18 Jan 2017 at 9:43 pm UTC

developers keep trying to sell keys by themselves but they really don't know anything about online retail

In many cases these people use a automated bot to deal with automatically purchasing the game and trying all of details in their credit card database, and then posting these keys to these 3rd party websites.
If you can't detect purchase bruteforcing, you deserve chargebacks (that's literally the reason they're there)

each chargeback notice had to be handled on a case-by-case basis, at one point I was spending 12 or more hours a week dealing with individual purchases.
all I see is a terrible retail system

After some research, we switched from processing payments through braintree and paypal, and instead implemented the incredible Humble widget[www.humblebundle.com]. Specifically Humble widget has a built in fraud prevention, which completely stopped all the chargebacks we were seeing.
turns out online retail is an actual job, and if you try to set an online store up without knowing anything about circumventing fraud, you get scammed, I'm stunned!

you'll notice steam, gog, humble don't get hit by chargebacks, that's because they know their stuff

please game developers, if you insist on selling keys yourselves, have a pro build the payment system, if he doesn't know about 3-D Secure at least, get another one

Wine 2.0-rc1 released, also showing progress towards Overwatch working in a future Wine version

Quoting: ShoNuffSome of you are full of it.
could you be any more toxic...

Quoting: ShoNuffIF this game works on wine and gets similar FPS to windows install, I guarantee you will buy and play in secret all while claiming NATIVE ONLY (in nerd voice).
I'm afraid that's not going to happen

Quoting: ShoNuffThere is a plethora of games that run better or just as good as windows through wine! I am an NVIDIA user and run a ton of games thru Steam using wine... it's not hard to do. The majority of wine complainers probably don't understand how to run the wine Prefix or for that matter write a script to run it from desktop.
no need for the condescending tone, geez

I use wine form previously bought games that don't have linux binaries, and I certainly know how to get good performance and have my ways with multiple prefixes. I am thankful for the work of wine developers, as I'm sure everyone is.
Still is hardly convenient to check wich prefix and setting to use everytime you install a game.

It's fine that you are content with wine solution, but I believe in the necessity not to reward videogame makers without linux builds, and I can easily fight the urge to play the latest overhyped crazes

Have been living solely on Linux for almost two years now, never been so satisfied with an OS

Quoting: tuubiI don't need to endure anything, and I'm not using Linux for the "principle". If anything, I run Linux for the convenience. Linux works for me, and no game is worth the pain in the neck that is Windows.
yes, amazes me that people refuse to see linux as an alternative when all I hear about windows nowadays is people complaining about fucked up drivers, updates resetting windows settings, privacy concern about the gazilion data-gathering dorment processes that are a pain to disable, useless preinstalled microsoft apps,...

Windows really has lost a lot in its maintenance easiness

Yep, that's my stance on gaming. No linux version, no money from me. Every major (and minor) game engine has mac and linux version. SDL2 supports every OS. There's no excuse to not have a linux version.
count me in as well

shame Blizzard has absolutely no interest in Linux

But they're part of the khronos group, so I guess there's hope in the long term

Why Linux games often perform worse than on Windows

on the subject of drivers development, I'd like to remind this great post
http://www.gamedev.net/topic/666419-what-are-your-opinions-on-dx12vulkanmantle/#entry5215019 [External Link]

tl;dr: graphic engine development is a clusterfuck, and drivers are badly needed to fix horrible mistakes (but Vulkan/DX12 may save us all)

with Linux still ridiculous market share and lack of serious investment by videogame developers and graphic card manufacturers, it's a wonder some videogames even launch, performance comes last and the brightest minds on earth are busy fixing rendering in directX drivers

Looks like Mojang will be supporting the new Minecraft launcher on Linux

You had me hyped up for a C++ version of the game using their work on the win10 edition, but no, it's just the launcher

it's cool I guess

AMD Zen looks like it will release at CES in January 2017
11 Oct 2016 at 9:38 pm UTC Likes: 2

They have ditched their own "clustered multi-threading" (CMT) and gone with "simultaneous multi-threading" (SMT) which is what Intel use. This is one reason why AMD Zen will have much stronger single threaded performance, which will be especially good for us gamers. That's not the only thing that will improve single threaded performance, but a nice change.
SMT doesn't improve single threaded performance, SMT is what allows a single core to run two threads at the same time with almost no cost, Intel implement it under the name Hyperthreading.

Zen looks to be a great, new, architecture, many things helping single threaded performance, and IPC, but that one isn't it.

best article detaling the zen arch I know is in french:
http://www.hardware.fr/news/14758/amd-detaille-architecture-zen.html [External Link]
but maybe arstechnica has something nice about it

From what the rumours say, Zen may actually bring AMD back in the game (which is good for our wallets), (almost?) matching intel best chips. Issue is intel too keeps improving so it would be unbelievable for AMD to actually come with something better, as Intel will unveil new chips (not a totally new arch though) in 2017 as well
Jim Keller certainly did great, but AMD has been proven untrustworthy with their announcements in the past, so let's not get over ourselves and wait for independent reviews

Civilization VI for Linux is no longer certain, only a possibility

can't even trust firaxis nowadays

anyway yet another good reason to never preorder

Steam now has above 2,500 Linux & SteamOS games available

Another interesting mark is the top played games on Steam. This changes often with releases and sales, but as of right now 8/10 games in the top 10 support Linux. Pretty good that.
key word: steam

we could really benefit from blizzard and EA (origin) getting involved in Linux

with google getting ready to sell higher end pc, this might trigger a chain reaction pushing all the big companies to forget about windows only
