Carmageddon: Reincarnation's Jason Garber Answers Our Questions On Their Linux Support
31 Mar 2014 at 3:31 pm UTC

Yeah, they were pretty open about the delayed release with the backers, as well a the schedule slip. I'm not in love with "PC" = "Windows" either, but adolson has a good point about tact.

I don't know anyone here in the community that enjoys self-censoring = not even our own Benevolent Dictator for Life), but we have to realize that we've now got people's attention. People whose attention we've been seeking, such as devs and representatives of digital distributors. There's noting wrong with carefully selecting our words, knowing that folks are coming to peer in at us periodically.

In fact, I think McCoy's comment is his most tactful (and funniest) version of that same comment I've ever seen from him (kudos, McCoy! You got a chuckle out of me).

Our challenge is to keep our message hard-hitting and honest (as usual) without coming off mindlessly pedantic and entitled.

Even if we _are_ GabeN's chosen people ;)

FTL: Advanced Edition Arrives To Frustrate Some More On April 3rd
28 Mar 2014 at 12:09 am UTC

I'm not sure if it's just me, but my FTL runs are way shorter than in Dungeons of Dredmor. Dredmor is a way deeper & richer game in nearly every way (classes, unlockables, descriptive text, puzzle variety, etc).

I would suggest that those who've the chance to do so might consider running through the game few times before playing the Advanced Edition. Some of the new changes have the potential to make it feel quite different.

Personally? I've had great fun with it, but have exhausted it's entertainment value and await new content with interest. :)

Humble Weekly Sale To Support Open Source Projects, Nice!
27 Mar 2014 at 10:06 pm UTC

This looks like it will help more developers bring native builds of their games, while still allowing them to use the development tools they are familiar with. I think this is fantastic, and if it provides a robust, familiar development environment, coupled with solid, performant, native builds, then it's definitely worth supporting.

If there are example projects, then someone could build a simple unit-test & benchmarking suite for platform comparison, especially 3D acceleration. That could also be used for community regression testing. I think that such a project might help dispell the sentiment that effort spent here is intended to build a glorified node-webkit, when that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Interview With Stefan Achatz Developer Of ROCCAT Gaming Hardware Drivers For Linux
27 Mar 2014 at 9:55 pm UTC

ROCCAT will be next on my mouse purchase list. I need to buy a high-frequency polling mouse for game engine testing, anyway.

It looks like their MK series of keyboards use Cherry switches. I do not own one, but that's what it says on the ROCCAT website.

Quoting: DrMcCoyI'll protect my IBM Model M keyboard with my life, though.
Sadly, mine died years ago, and no replacement was readily available. I've since switched to a Cherry MX Blue based board, and I love it. It's no Model M, but after spending six months on membrane, the song of my blue switches was sheer joy!

Interesting to see Double Fine Productions getting into the publishing business. Having more cool, small, indie publishers is probably a very good thing (as we're seeing with Devolver, Pheonix Online Studios, etc).

Ground Pounders Strategy Game From 'Sword Of The Stars' Developer Linux Version Now Available
26 Mar 2014 at 2:18 am UTC

Quoting: Dosilwhy can't we have starcraft and C & C style rts's people keep throwing out old board game style strategy games like it's innovative where are the RTS'S!
I like those too! I don't see why we can't have both. It's not a zero-sum scenario. In this case, this kind of game is what this team was able to build for us.

Eador. Masters of the Broken World Is Still A Sore Spot For Linux Gamers
26 Mar 2014 at 2:16 am UTC

Quoting: DrMcCoyLikewise, I for one am peeved about Divinity: Original Sin. The alpha does not work on Linux, and no peep from then when or how, only "later".

At this point, I'm not even sure anymore that the final game will have Linux support at launch.
I'll poke them, too McCoy. I have been lax in pushing my Kickstarters because of being busy with so many other things, but enough of us raising noise will certainly see a response. Thanks for this reminder that we're all in it together :)
