Jack Keane adventure game shows up on Desura
12 Mar 2013 at 6:10 am UTC
I'm hoping we can help raise enough sales on Jack Keane to convince RuneSoft that it will be worthwhile to publish the sequel under development, Jack Keane and the Fire Within for a release with the Windows version.
Also, Linux-first publishing has happened before. It is rare, but not unheard-of in the indie games world. They are usually small games built by 1-2 man crews.

Quoting: toorThis game is old. It has been released years ago, on windows, mac, and linux. But it is funny, and a good adventure game. I know I'm not the only one who has been working on RuneSoft since last year, trying to get them to publish their back catalog on Desura! This one has loads of funny shout-outs to other classic adventure games and popular culture (like film and television).
...
Don't worry man, you won't find someone crazy enough to publish a linux version before windows and mac x) That's a dream. A delicious one, but still a dream.

I'm not Liam, but I'll answer your question anyway. It's been my experience that recommending Linux to happy Windows (and Mac OS X) users is a bad strategy. I have a far better impact in suggesting, and committing my personal support, for unhappy Windows or Mac users.
For example, if a friend ends up in a bad way with a Windows 8 pre-installed computer, one in which the vendor won't supply up-to-date Windows 7 drivers, that is the time to say "Hey, I'll do whatever it takes for you. We'll get it figured out with Linux!". This strategy has helped me get dozens of people going over the years, and is the way that causes the least amount of friction. Viruses, rootkits, losing data, crashing drivers... all of these are great opportunities to help someone try something new. Be on call for them, and show them how awesome and supportive our community is (by being that person in the community, first and foremost).
Otherwise, you end up with someone who feels kind of badgered into trying it out, in a half-assed way, and has yet another story of "... oh, I tried that Linux once and it didn't work for me, and I like [whatever] better, and knew it was a bad decision to even try it and, blah blah blah, blah..."
We do not need more versions of that story in the community. :)

I love adventure games... I'll definitely be checking this out, no question about! Thanks, Liam!
Dude, and donationware? I hope some others will kick him some money. If it like it, I know I will do so. :D

Quoting: Bumadarreason I use wine is because I am not sure that all the good mods work via gemrb, some are not needed as gemrb is better then the old infinity engine, but several add a lot of good stuff to the game, new quests, expanding quests, fixing them etc. etc.Bumadar, that's totally true. That's why I mentioned GemRB, but didn't claim that people should use it. Just that it's there! I wanted to make the point that even spending a few dollars on GOG to buy Planescape: Torment doesn't mean an experience subject to the complication of Wine. Plus... more players using GemRB means a bigger community to port over good mods and make them work. I might be willing to put some time into that, later this summer... might you, someday? :)

Those replaying Planescape: Torment in Wine might be interested in checking out GemRB [External Link], an open-source re-implementation of Bioware's Infinity Engine on which the game was written. Like ScummVM, it lets you play these games natively :)

Haha, yes, I did back that project, and continually poked those guys during the unfolding development process. :D And I was not the only one... the other Linux folks (as well as the Mac backers, actually) joined me in gently reminding them periodically to bring us up-to-date on the project.
They got within $3K of the porting stretch goal at the time of funding the Kickstarter (PayPal included) and kept open their PayPal for a while after the campaign closed, and confirmed that the monies would go toward stretch goals.
And then they stopped updating us on PayPal (which indicated, to me, that they'd reached the stretch goal but didn't want the pressure from Linux/Mac folks until after the main release). They did state in their update #26 in January that they will, for certain, do the ports... so it's really good for Liam to apply some journalistic pressure on that commitment ;)

3 new bundles with Linux titles in them

I went back and read my post again (before you'd replied) and thought that I'd probably waxed a bit nostalgic, showing my age... and worse, perhaps a bit boring. And then I see this. You've made my day!
I do truly believe that this Second Golden Age will be much better... it's not on the backs of a crushing AAA commercial market, where failed investment in risk is rewarded with the business version of crucifixion. It's on the backs of lean and thrifty indie developers.
We do need to support these creative souls; they carve out a sustainable niche in the business of gaming! It is growing slowly as a bottom-up approach, and we're bringing on the middle-sized games houses now! Double Fine, inXile, Harebrained Schemes, Obsidian, Uber Entertainment, and even the (smallish) development division of Valve itself!
It does, however, start with the small indie developers... and there are some great folks represented in these bundles. I, personally, can recommend The Journey Down: Chapter One, for any lover of adventure games. Skygoblin are an absolutely tiny indie company (like four dudes in Sweden).

A Linux user for more than 10 years, I've just recently rediscovered the passion for gaming. Couldn't have chosen a better time than now: the second Golden Age of Linux gaming.Haha, muntdefems, you're the best, dude! :D

Pledged, but I'm curious about the Linux port (and Mac, for that matter). Earlier on, when the game was first posted, it clearly stated that it was C# game, and that portability was very uncertain (you know the usual verbiage... "Blah blah blah, blah... but if the funding goes exceptionally, smashingly, gobsmackingly fantastic, we'll consider other platforms. No promises, of course!".
It's some distance from "Windows game on C#" to "Win/Lin/Mac! Everybody is welcome... iOS is coming too!". I wonder how this was accomplished... MonoGame? Jonathan porting his C# ElfTools framework natively somehow? Hopefully it's not an undisclosed winelib port for Linux and wineskin wrap for Mac :(
Some clarity from the dev would be welcome.
