PipeWire is the future for Linux audio and I am sold on it
2 March 2022 at 3:03 am UTC

Quoting: VulphereOne of the reasons why PipeWire was created is to unify consumer audio (high latency) and pro audio (low latency) in a common ecosystem (ala macOS' CoreAudio), CoreAudio has great concept and I'm glad PipeWire brought that concept to Linux (and eventually will provide long-sought stability in Linux audio ecosystem)
This is probably a stupid question, but…why is there a split in the first place? Why can't consumer audio be low latency too? Or is this massive overkill like providing the average office worker with a monitor with a 500 Hz refresh rate?

Valheim updated with full gamepad and Steam Deck support

Was this from when they were accidentally testing Proton versions even when native versions were available, and they haven't yet updated with the new test? Or it could just be the native version doesn't work well on the Deck. Actually, maybe you could test that Liam.

Actually actually, that brings up a question: how easy is it to select between native and Proton versions of games on the Deck?

Nicest adventure game in this event that I have played.
I didn't play this demo because I'm generally not really into adventure games, but from the trailer it looked really well done and I might put it on the wishlist. I got a good laugh out of the trailer conversation:
"Someone broke into my grandfather's place last night."
"Oh, wow. Is he ok?"
"No, he's dead."
"What?!?"
"No, I mean, he passed away a while back. I'm just here to sell his house."

Developers - let us know if you need help with Steam Deck testing

Just wanted to say good on ya Liam for offering to help out like this for free. I hope this proves really helpful for devs.

Up to 27% for me, with just Ultimate Chicken Horse and Supporting* Surviving Mars unsupported. I'm hoping UCH gets supported soon, since literally one of the first things that popped into my head upon hearing the Steam Deck announcement was taking it around to friends' houses with a few controllers to play a few rounds on the TV as a party game. It runs natively (and fine) on Linux and already handles controllers, so I'm not sure what the hold up might be, but at least the devs have continued to support it quite well so I hope it'll be fixed soon.

Gabe hand-delivers signed Steam Decks, sounds like a Steam Deck 2 is planned

QuoteFar more people having been buying the most expensive model, more than they expected. So they will continue to look at the high-end. The 512GB model has significantly outsold the base 64GB model.
Very interesting, for all the talk I saw in articles about how "you can buy the 64 GB model and upgrade the SSD yourself" it seems not a lot of people feel like doing that.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThat worked. Unfortunately, although it worked, it didn't work. That is, I found the enable-y thing, and it let me download the demo and busily also downloaded Proton and tried to use it and . . . I'm not totally clear from the popups whether it was the demo or Proton itself that didn't happen, but yeah. Demo did not happen. Oh well. Thanks though--clearly in theory you gave me exactly the correct advice.
No worries. You said it was IXION you wanted to try, right? You might try forcing it to use Proton Experimental (if you didn't set that when you enabled its use for everything)—IXION itself didn't require it for me, but there were a few demos I downloaded that didn't run until I forced them to use it. And hey, at least you've got it next time you feel like trying a Windows-only demo.

The Steam Deck has released, here's my initial review

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI was just thinking about the way some of the reviewers were complaining about not being able to try Windows on it yet because there's no driver for the APU and I suddenly realized hey, yeah . . . this is probably the first time there's been a graphics card that had a Linux driver before it had a Windows driver. Gave me a bit of a snicker, to be honest.
Pretty canny move from Valve, to be honest—"Yup, it's just a PC, so you can install whatever OS* you want on it! Oh, but the Windows drivers aren't available at launch so it'll be a sub-par experience, sorry…"

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the openness that lets people install other OSes on it, but Valve's not under any compulsion to treat all OSes as equal when it comes to allocating their efforts. And I must admit to just a smidgen of schadenfreude at the thought of Windows being the second-class citizen for once.

*How long until someone puts macOS on it out of curiosity, I wonder? Or BSD?

QuoteFor those of you who have a date of sometime after Q2, Valve said to expect more news on that "soon".
"After Q2" gang represent! Ah, well, nothing to do but compose my soul in patience. At least it sounds like we'll get a more stable product with more of the bugs ironed out. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose…

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOften in a 4X game, my favourite part is the "Expand" part. I don't want it nobbled. You're already limited by Influence, too.
I hear yah, that's one of my favorite parts too, right after "Explore". Just think of it this way: by slowing down the expansion phase for everyone, you get to enjoy more of it before the galaxy fills up and it's down to the relatively less-interesting politicking.
