Quoting: PenglingI recently saw a description for this - "video games as video games", describing the medium when it's used for fantastical things, rather than for emulating things that exist in real-life in some form. Space Invaders is considered to be the first game of that kind.
That's an interesting way of thinking about/classifying games–thanks!

Dwarf Fortress hit nearly half a million sales in December 2022

Phew! I just squeaked in there buying it on the 31st!

I found out recently I'm actually among the fairly early players; I found it sometime between 2008–2010 (and was obsessed off-and-on for years), and recently found out it first came out in 2006. I came to it soon after the switch from 2D to 3D, and with how much stuff there already was in the game I just assumed (as a kid at the time) that it must've been out in development for a decade or so already.

The innovative part of Stray was "you're playing as a cat instead of a human", and its general setting. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Stray, thought the setting was an interesting idea, and hope we get a sequel (and voted for it because it was the only game in that category I'd played). But I'm of two minds about this award, because, yeah, its gameplay wasn't anything that hasn't been seen in third-person platformers before, but hopefully it winning might make game developers realize that, actually, people are capable of empathizing with a non-human protagonist, and you can make games without a human protagonist and they'll still sell well. I'm already a human 24/7, give me more games (of Stray's quality or better) where I get to play cool animals, or robots, or aliens, or something else that's different.

What I want to see in 2023 for Linux, Gaming, Steam Deck and more

The battery life being the biggest gripe people seem to talk about would hopefully get wiped off the table. Having it a bit lighter somehow would be another great bit to focus on, to prevent that hand / wrist strain from longer sessions.
I feel like those two things are pulling in mutually-exclusive directions. We can all hope for future continued advances in battery technology, though!

"This account's replay is not shared".

Seems like you forgot to switch your link to public. It's private by default.
Ah, there's at least somebody else that is curious enough to look through them all
I haven't looked through all of them, but of the ones I did I note the average gamer here is pretty far above the norm in terms of achievements achieved this past year! (Though Valve don't provide a standard deviation so I can't put it terms of N-sigma outliers.)

The Steam Deck really doesn't need exclusives
29 Dec 2022 at 7:51 am UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: Purple Library GuyAnd while Steam doesn't do exclusives either, for practical purposes Steam has tons of exclusives--all the thousands of games that have never found it worth their while to go on any other site--and now with the Steam Deck, the reach you get from just releasing on Steam has expanded, reducing the incentive to bother with other stores and platforms by a little more.
Yeah, PC (and thus the Deck) already has more exclusives than any console in history has ever had. How many (tens of) thousands of games out there can only be played on PC?

Now, I'm all for making things available on multiple platforms and giving people more Choice™, but I must admit I wouldn't mind seeing some games come out on Linux first with the Windows and Mac ports released some time later.

I'm confused why it says "screenshot shared: –" but it also correctly has the PlateUp! screenshot I shared yesterday. :dizzy:

Slay the Spire and One Deck Dungeon would be a bit higher if it was counting offline playtime since I often play those on my Deck offline.

Portal with RTX released free on Steam

I read an article the other day (I forget where now) that the change to more realistic textures and over-all darker lighting change Portal from fairly lighthearted and fun into more of a claustrophobic horror game. Anyone notice anything like that?
