The Quantum Catapult origin sounds interesting. The first origin I tried when they first released was the one that starts you with an excavation site in your starting system, and I was blown away by the story it revealed (despite, on the face of it, not being as exciting as many other origins), so if it's anything like that it should be fun.
Steam Deck hits 2,500 games Verified or Playable

And I'm sure it's not like all of them are cheap asset-flips either. We always hear about the Spelunkys and FTLs and Stardew Valleys and other break-out hits, but not the presumably hundreds of solid, decent-but-nothing-amazing indie games that maybe rack up a few thousands sales over the years but never reach a thousand concurrent players.
*I wonder how much higher? Do you need five thousand game ownders around the world to get a thousand playing at the same time? Ten? Twenty?

Quoting: JpxeHuh! That's really interesting, especially that second bullet point of only ~4800 games ever having more than a thousand concurrent players. Obviously the ownership must be several times higher* than a thousand for that happen (since not everyone can be online at the same time), but still, that's a lot of game that have low enough ownership/playing rates not to reach that mark.Quoting: Philadelphus2,500! Only, what, ~55,000 more to go? :grin:I wonder how many of the games actually have players.. There's a lot of asset flips with zero or just a couple of reviews.
I kid, but obviously that's still a good milestone to hear. Wonder how high the number'll be by the time I finally get my order email in Q3?
I did some digging on steamdb
- 528 games have had over 1000 concurrent players in the last 24 hours
- ~4800 games have had over 1000 concurrent players all-time
- ~8500 games have a rating above 80%.

Linux user share on Steam hits second highest percentage in years

Quoting: GuestHDevelopers make a platform's fortunes, and Proton is shouting to developers "keep developing for windows".I think it's more Linux's <2% market share that is shouting to developers to invest their finite time in ~98% of their potential customer base. Once Linux market share rises to a "large-enough" amount (and the number of games still coming out for Window + MacOS suggests that number doesn't actually have to be all that huge, but is larger than ~1%), developers will naturally start investing in it. But the previous decade or two have definitely shown that people aren't going to adopt Linux in droves if they can only play <1/10th of the games available on Windows. I didn't come up with the analogy, but Proton is Valve's Trojan Horse against Windows: show people that yes, they can switch to Linux without giving up most of their already-purchased game libraries, and eventually some will start to switch (helped by the Deck giving people a taste of Linux in a gaming context). We're still in the transition period (which might yet prove to be years or even decades long) where the Linux market share is quietly rising while there's still no sign of increasing native ports (yet), but the early stages of spring often still look a lot like winter.

Quoting: Guestwow if this keeps going on, in a couple of years we will take on MacOS!Yeah, I noticed that when another article on this brought my attention to it: MacOS is down to 2.55% this month. It was higher in the past, wasn't it, and I'm not just misremembering? I've had in my head for a while that it was "about 5%". Not surprising, of course, with how Apple seems to be doing its darndest to kill off gaming on it, but still. With Linux increasing and MacOS decreasing we could surpass it in size much sooner than I would otherwise have expected.

Steam Deck updates out for Stable and Beta, better Refresh Rate Switching

Quoting: superboybotThe Phawx's latest video tested Steam Deck's RRS and found the black screen lasted about 2/5ths of a second. Assuming this newest update came after he filmed that part, the change between refresh rates must be practically instantaneous at this point.Soon, the screen will go black for 2/5 of a second before you change the setting.
If they keep going down this dark path, Valve will end up evoking vile powers, reaching back through time itself to deliver 'negative black screen time.'

I played the demo when it came out for Steam Next Fest last year, and just…wasn't sold on it. I found the graphics actually made things less comprehensible at a glance compared to FTL, unfortunately. (Like, the icons for each room being tiny and in the corner, rather than clearly spread out face-on on a floor tile of the room.) Now that it's out I should perhaps at least find video of someone playing it and see if that's been improved.

I played a few hours last night (found the New Content, won't spoil it!), and found I had a silly grin plastered to my face pretty much the entire time. I found the original through watching someone's video on it, so it was fun to go in un-spoiled this time. Maybe I'm just a sucker for metahumor, but I could listen to The Narrator yammer on all day. (Luckily I've spent enough time listening I can hear anything I read in his voice, if I want.)

Quoting: MatomboAs a dedicated player of Paradox games: wow, sounds like a great deal! :grin:Quoting: subWasn't that planned to be a free upgrade for those already owning it? :huh:I think I remember that too. But Plans change I guess?
Well with the discount you can think of it as a 16$ addon to a 9$ game.
