VK9, the open source project to implement d3d9 over Vulkan reaches another milestone

It looks like it will take a while, but it is a great step forward for easier legacy games porting and support on all platforms.

Linux Gaming in 2016, an end of year review

This year has been the year I discovered Gaming On Linux! This is the kind of website and community I have been looking for ever since I completely got rid of Windows in 2013. Thank you for your work on keeping us updated without having to visit a thousand different websites!

Now to the gaming side: 2016 has been an amazing year for Linux, but it was not perfect. We still got a fair amount of canceled games, not-so-optimized ports, SteamOS has gone silent and without Feral Interactive we would have had nearly no AAA this year. I personally don't mind a monopoly, but it is never a good thing anyway. I feel like Aspyr Media abandoned us, but it looks like they did not do a lot of MacOS ports either.

Still, Linux gained more exposition and traction on the gaming industry: Vulkan works (not yet at 100% of its capacities), every major game engines support our platform, VR is coming, drivers are nearly on pair with Windows... This paves the way for future games.

2017 will be a very interesting year.

What one game would blow your mind if it came to Linux & SteamOS?

I would say GTA5, it's the last game I played before ditching Windows for good. Before I was dual-booting. And as it is made by Rockstar, by the time we have a GTA in Linux we'll probably have everything else we want!

Quoting: MikeI am very tempted to try this game, but the lack of cross-platform multiplayer is kind of annoying. This is why I can't play Company of Heroes 2 with my friends that don't want to get Linux and basically can't play as there is hardly anyone online... and will be the same with this one. How is the multi doing? Is it actually possible to play without waiting half an hour to get a game?
+ 1! That's exactly the case. So far I just heard excuses from feral. I do love that company but I won't buy any non-crossplatform-multiplayer games from them - sorry, but no. Most of my friends do use windows. What's the point on buying linux-mac multiplayer games then?
They aren't excuses, they are very real technical reasons and it has been explained a number of times. It won't happen unless the original developer updates the Linux version to use a cross-platform lib for it, which is hard to do.
I assume you meant Windows version... But yes I know the technical reasons behind this and this is what happens when developers do not think cross-platform from the ground up.

And updating the Windows version would be hard but not impossible.

Valve seems to have removed the SteamPlay logo from Steam

seriously that steamOS logo is still confusing lots of people.

bring the tux back, everybody knows its a Linux icon, even kind a newbie user who has just used computers for gaming.
I wouldn't be so categorical, the vast majority of people still do not know what Linux is. Tux is known among Linux users and some computer enthusiasts, but it is striking to see how many people do not know what Tux represents.

When I was at university (which was last year, so not a long time ago), I had a communication class where our teacher had chosen to compare OS market shares, and we were only 2 out of 34 to understand what this little penguin was about. Someone finally asked what it was, and the answer made me laugh and mad at the same time.

Our teacher basically said: "Oh this? This is Linux, some obscure system made for geeks back in the 90's that never took off and never will as it is stuck in its era. It still uses terminal prompts as of today, you know, those green text commands on a black screen... No wonder no one uses it!"

Sorry about the novel, but I had to share that.

You might want to avoid the Nvidia 375.20 driver, Nvidia recommend downgrading
27 Nov 2016 at 11:10 am UTC

No troubles with 375.20, but I am playing on a laptop so it might be related...

Edit: I run an Nvidia GTX 950M on Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 and actually get less FPS drops in Mad Max. No problems so far to run several apps at the same time or in games that have been mentioned (Grid Autosport and Mad Max, as I don't own Deus EX)

For those still interested, it looks like Homefront: The Revolution for Linux is still being worked on

I am still waiting for this game. It looks nice to play so I will definitely buy it if it lands on Linux. Plus I love open worlds anyway :p

Saints Row IV gets Steam Workshop support for Windows, they are hoping to update the Linux version too

Quoting: MGOidI was about to buy the game since it is on sale, but a LOT of people are having trouble with saves. I once lost 45 hours in Batman AC because of a such bug, so I'm not touching this until the fix this problem.
I own it and never had any troubles with saves. However it is not very well optimized...
