The share of Linux users on Steam is still holding steady

Regarding GOG I have the same view as Scaine above, until they have their client set up for Linux I won't buy again from them. I bought Oddworld New'n Tasty from them and it's unplayable, cannot setup the controler, there are issues in the menus and it was a pain to install for a Linux newbie like me. I didn't buy it again from Steam to check but I'm quite sure the user experience there is far better :(

Quoting: ShmerlSome people ditch Windows because they are fed up with DRM. Same people usually don't use Steam ;) You can see a lot of such folks among GOG users.Might be the case for some, but what I see around me is people ditching Windows because of Microsofts policy with regards to privacy and their general practices since introducing W10 (my case btw).

Yesterday I fired up my Windows 7 install for the first time in about 6 months to backup everything that's left there and reclaim the 512GB SSD for Linux and guess what ? As soon as I opened Steam I got the Steam Survey :D
Think that got triggered by the AMD RX480 I installed since I last booted it. Of course I declined to take it, hoping to get it for Linux when I make a fresh Mint install on it soon :P
As to the DRM thing, I had DRMs in Steam when I used it within Windows, I don't see why I would complain now that I switched to Linux. Going for an open source OS doesn't mean everything has to become open source, and I guess most of the users switching from Windows would be inclined in the same way. Only the long time Linux (or GNU as they would also quarrel this naming) believers would still ask for everything open source ^_^

Quoting: wojtek88I saw the price and I laughed badly. Seriously, WTF? There is a givaway of 5 million copies of basic version of the game, and a moment later there is an ultimate edition of a game for 45 euro? 4 years old game for 45 euro? What is it - GTA V?The thing is that before the Ultimate Edition the game plus all DLCs amounted to more than 170€, so in that respect 45€ can be seen as "reasonable". On top of that they gave away the base game to a lot of people and I guess the price to get all the missing DLCs will be less than the full price for the Ultimate Edition, that is not as evil as you seem to put it ;)
I can't imagine what would DLCs have to include in order to force me to pay 45 euro for them...
I'm not against paying 45 euro for game - there are games worth such an amount of money. But seriously - ultimate version of a game that you could have in basic version for free? I can't understand that business model.
The other topic is that gaming industry is in terrible shape. Most of the game developers try to sell us the same product once again for ridiculous price. The whole idea of remasters, game of the year edition and ultimate editions is pure evil.
I can understand game of the year edition for games that have some interesting story DLCs, for example Witcher 3. 2 great DLCs that enhance main story - brilliant, I understand why they were created.
But Payday 2...
I may be ignorant here, but I have to ask. Seriously - what new content adds Ultimate edition to basic version of the game? What can possibly be created in the same multiplayer focused product to force people to pay 45 euro for it? I could google it, but honestly I want to read it in this thread and read your opinion about current state of the gaming industry.

Quoting: DissCentThe last time I played this game I wasn't able to play with my friends because the Linux version was behind the Windows version. I don't think they care too much about us.I'm playing with my Windows friends since January or so and it has been working like a charm. More than a 100 hours on record and really enjoying this game, it enabled me to stop booting into W7 to play Battlefield 4 with them ^^

Quoting: LinasWow, that's quite bad. I was planning to get myself an RX580, but with this performance level, even a modest NVIDIA card would beat it.I have an RX480 (with MESA) and it works really well with games like Tomb Raider, Dirt Rally or Payday 2. There are plenty of benchmarks on Phoronix for you to check if you want to get reassured ;)
Is it as bad with all the games? Would it be possible to run something like Mankind Divided on AMD graphics?
The 'Razer DeathAdder Chroma' is quite possibly the nicest mouse I've ever owned

I'm using a G600 since a couple of years and I'm really happy with the buttons that I use in FPS games to quickly switch between weapons or do some actions. However it's a little too narrow for me and I'm not holding it straight (it rests a bit sideways in my hand). I just discovered the Nyth reading your post and I'm really interested in it. How's the software support for it under Linux ? Does Roccat provide something to configure it or is there a non-official Linux tool that does the trick ?

Quoting: 14Use the right tool for the job. I have the Nyth and it's just about perfect. I have large hands, so I use the wider attachment piece on the side. I like several side buttons, but I don't need all 12. The Nyth allowed me to put a blank strip in the middle so I can grip the mouse as hard as I want without mistakenly hitting buttons. The far rear buttons are too hard to quickly reach, so I have the double-wide buttons in those spaces. So, I end up having six buttons on the side. They get a lot of use in, yes, MMO GAMES, as well as FPS. Get used to switching weapons using mouse buttons and the keyboard becomes too slow.Hi 14,
So yeah, the Nyth deserves "MMO" and "gamer" labels.
Before the Nyth, I had the Logitech G600 and the Razer Naga before that. I thought that the Logitech was a really, really good mouse, but after about a year, my hand started hurting because of the way you have to grip the G600. Since there are three main click buttons instead of two, you lose the 'ring finger' to grip the right side of the mouse, leaving only your pinky. After about a year of my pinky doing the heavy lifting, I couldn't take it anymore. It was a bummer. That was the only reason I switched to the Nyth.

I would have rather supported Feral by directly buying Dirt Rally from them but it was too pricey for me @49.99€, couldn't resist the Humble Monthly :(

I guess this is also available on Ubuntu based distros like Mint ? And for someone (like me) currently using padokka ppa it should be removed first before adding the new Ubuntu ppa ?

There's a question I would have liked asked to Feral and that's about how the situation evolves financially for them regarding Linux gaming.
I guess that if they continue making ports it means they're still making money out of them, but it would be interesting to know what the trend is in terms of sales. That would be a good way to put into perspective the Steam hardware survey. If Feral has seen a growth in sales over the months/years that would confirm that although the Linux share seems to drop over time (in Steam) the number of Linux users is rising nonetheless. I must say that growing sales would also reassure me regarding the future of Linux gaming :)
