Valve show off their new Steam Library design and a new Events page

Quoting: BielFPsSomething that I miss in the current interface is a direct option to see the store page of a game in my library.
Wait, can't we do that now? Every title in my library has a link to "Store Page" on the right of the screen when I click on the title...

Quoting: sketchwhere do you get the linux installer? is it released yet? In Steam?
On Steam at least, no installer per se. Just like installing any other Steam title.

Google announce ‘Stadia’, their new cloud gaming service built on Linux and Vulkan

Quoting: CandricSI might just be the biggest sceptic, but I doubt this is going to increase the number of games being developed for Linux... That being said, for those who don't care about the issues it brings (Google ecosystem and such), this will allow Linux users to be able to play the latest AAA games and some indie titles that aren't released for Linux but are made available on Stadia.. I'm still very pessimistic about this being very beneficial to native Linux gaming.
You kind of addressed your own issues, but I largely agree. At least initially, I think we'll see simultaneous streaming and "store" releases, and we might not get more Linux games there, but I think streaming is where everyone is going and stores as we know them will go away. Google might be bringing the most tech first, but NVIDIA is already themselves in this streaming service space and it seems pretty obvious to me that Valve (hello Proton) is racing there too with perhaps a different technical solution (they need not only a streaming service of the future, but need to leverage as much as their existing library and base as well). And there are always rumors that Amazon is working on something too.

I've argued for a long time (search GOL archives!) that in 5 or 10 years the majority of gaming would be streaming, and that we'd view buying games on an online "store" with as much quaint nostalgia as going to a Gamestop to buy a boxed game would have now (or a Blockbuster to "rent" a DVD or tape). This will obviously be terrific for Linux (and Mac, and anything not Windows) gaming as it takes the user's platform out of the equation. Proton was our gateway drug to getting there, streaming will take us all the way...

Addendum: Think about how worried about the Epic Store all of us have been lately (myself included), when that feels like a bb-gun now to Google's gaming bazooka.

Google announce ‘Stadia’, their new cloud gaming service built on Linux and Vulkan

A question for everyone, though: Is anyone else surprised Google has backed off Google Fiber and having its own ISP? I mean, this is going to need gobs of bandwidth for low latency, 4K gaming. The ISP's/cable companies could put a serious crimp into Google's plans in our new non-net-neutral age. I imagined if they had this planned (and I think it could be really big for them $$-wise) they would still be working on being a low cost data provider... Ideas?

Certainly can't be bad for Linux, either on the development front (or gameplay front), especially in hopefully supercharging Vulkan. I don't think a service like this is really aimed at gamers like most of the readers here. Certainly, this technologically can't yet replace the experience I can have with my 1080 ti and 3440 x 1440 widescreen monitor. But for more mainstream, casual gamers I can see this being very appealing in the same way Netflix and Spotify are appealing in their genres.

Addendum: I stand corrected, it might be able to replace my hardware, as they're promising 4K, 60 FPS... Interesting...

Quoting: aristoriasI have constant high framerates except rarely a little on the map when too much is going on. And there's nothing negative that could be traced back to the linux port.
Having watched streamers, that's definitely true on the Windows version as well...

The latest progress report for PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 is looking good

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI'm finding it hard to figure out how significant the improvement is.
I never had a PS3, but I presume there's a "core cannon" of the best of PS3 that everyone's interested if it runs or not. Just like how, with Proton, 90% of everyone's questions online were, "Does it run Witcher 3 and Overwatch?"

Quoting: PatolaFor some reason their engine doesn't run well (or at all) in Wine. It was true for X Rebirth (I am the maintainer of the winehq appdb page for it), and it is true for X4. So either they ported to Linux or they made their windows engine wine-friendly, if they wanted the linux crowd as players. They chose the best solution, methinks.
I'm not 100% sure, but I remember reading elsewhere that Egosoft basically wrote their own Wine-esque wrapper to get things to run (apparently a good one). It's not a 100% bespoke Linux engine, but their usual engine with their own wrapper. I'll see if I can track down the source. Performance is excellent for me though, however they've done it.

A Linux beta of X4: Foundations is due in 'the next few days' (update: it's up)

Quoting: PatolaI have been playing the Linux beta since day one (it's on beta 3 by now) and the game is HYSTERICALLY good. It is 13 days past its launch day now and I already have 70h on it, please note that I am a married 45-year old with a 9 to 6 job and not a teenager with all the time of day available, and still I play it 5+h a day.
You're my hero :). I'm nearly the same age, with a demanding job and two young kids, and I've got a fraction of the time you do. Still getting a feel for the UI and playing with keybinding and flight dynamics. I don't want to put too much time in until it goes final as I don't want to lose save games as development moves forward. I've been frustrated in EA titles before putting in time, they make a change, and all my hours of progress go away...

So far, I'm deeply impressed, and performance on my machine is outstanding, much better than I was anticipating.
