Quoting: AppelsinI think most of the shit Canonical got was due to them literally trying to force you to use the snap, if you wanted to or not. Not because it shipped as a snap, which of course is up to them, but you couldn’t even uninstall it and sudo apt install “normal” Firefox, since *buntu was set up to install the Snap version even if you did the command to install apt/deb version. That, I think, was a mistake on their part, to think would go over well with people.

That’s some Microsoft level asshattery. “We know you tried to install Firefox, but we installed Edgeium instead.”
That can't be right because you could uninstall anything. They forced or tried to force? No, the choice is yours and you can remove anything you like if you're not into the way Ubuntu has chosen to go ahead. See, there really is also the bigger picture for Canonical as service providers.

Canonical supports Ubuntu LTS releases for 10 years. It takes a huge amount of effort to build the latest Firefox (or Chromium) on ancient distros and Canonical didn't want to do that any more.

Users of old Ubuntu releases will get new browser updates (including security fixes) faster than with the traditional .deb update system.

Also, there are people who keep using Ubuntu after it has reached EOL. They won't get any security updates except from snaps because snaps still work.

The firefox.deb in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS does more than just install the Snap. It also provides integration for bug reporting and for allowing the Snap to be set as the default browser.

Quoting: fagnerlnfirefox improved a lot the startup time on snap and it's performing better in benchmarks than non-snap version.

So, the official snapped Firefox now works better than the old fashion one. How things change. And what negativity Canonical got from small but feisty band for this work in progress

Looks like Steam snap is coming together nicely already too: https://ubuntu.com/blog/what-the-steam-snap-is-evolving [External Link]

"By packaging Steam as a snap we’ve ensured that all of the dependencies required for gaming are included in the application. This means no messing around adding and maintaining PPAs and no issues with 32-bit libraries. Everything you need is included and isolated from the rest of your OS, regardless of the distro you’re running."

Quoting: heidi.wengerVery nice adventure gaming year turning out. Return to Monkey Island, Return of the Amazon Queen, Ken and Roberta Williams' Colossal Cave 3D, Blade Runner Enhanced etc.

Found another upcoming new one too, Splittown https://splittowngame.com [External Link] looks like Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango style!
Have you seen the reviews for BladeRunner 'Enhanced'. By all accounts it would appear to be the exact opposite...
Well i have eyeballed some of it. Maybe out of proportion aswell. I read the ORIGINAL is included with the purchase so... One thing i right out understand is that apprantely some sections of the game are missing from the Enhanced. Maybe Nightdive Studios works them in later  price is not too harsh in any case as its about 8 bucks!

Videogaming seems some serious business

Free stealth game The Dark Mod v2.10 is a HUGE upgrade

All i know is that through our work we meet many physically, mentally or visually (eye sight) challenged people. They are absolutely not up for many different technical hurdles to install software.

Majority of them just can't do it though gaming helps many deeply depressed individuals. They can do it but in total basic levels. It can be difficult to see things in perspective so much contrasting to ones own defaults in life.

I think Linux and its gaming should be (and mainly is) suitable for everyone. If someone can and would be willing to do that one click install possible for also this game i think it should be just made. It would be for the good of challenged people. The old way of installing with terminal would still exist. or maybe this game is not suitable for such easy installation. I wouldn't know as i too am not a technical person (and don't want to be).

There is a reason why Steam is so popular i think: you click "PLAY" and, well, then you play! Maybe The Dark Mod gets to Steam just like Super Tux!

Quoting: BeamboomOh ffs. Do even windows users use that one? What does the browser stats say?
It's actually more popular than Firefox overall, going by multiple stats websites.
not popular - people are just to lazy to google chrome
This.

The general user base on computers barely manage to turn on their PC, let alone know what a browser is and that they can change it to others.

This so much. Puts in the perspective why it is nothing short from out right crazy to assume that making say an AppImage executable before you can run it, is SO EASY in general!

If a single click won't do it in the "AppStore" (that's clearly indicated as such in Linux distro), the hands are already up and head spinning. This issue has to be solved and we the so called power users don't have to touch this solution and can keep on typing like crazy to our terminals even while asleep you know ....
