Wednesday Madness, a quick look at some good Linux gaming deals
23 August 2017 at 9:18 pm UTC

Bioshock Infinite looks interesting but I have questions - The trailer shows the character shooting and also using 'powers' - Are the power usage optional? In other words, can I play and end the game using just weapons?

Looks like GOG Galaxy won't come to Linux any time soon, as it's "not a priority"

Quoting: TheRiddickListen kids, for ages now there has been a top thread in their feature/support forum, that thread is LINUX GOG Galaxy, the demand for a Linux version is VERY HIGH. However the developer is 100% ignoring it, ignoring their user base and future possible customers on top. Like I said they are HOSTILE towards Linux, don't know when that will change.

No need to start petitions or some other crazy thing, it won't change a damn thing!

I don't see signs of them being hostile towards Linux. How exactly do you see them being hostile towards Linux?

This is what I see. They sell and give away games for the Linux OS. They have support for the users of Linux - if they have issues with the games they purchased for their OS.

If you don't like how they do things, just don't support them. Saying things that are not 100% true is not the move, especially coming from the Linux community.

Personally, I have no evidence of this - just a gut feeling, I think they bit off more than they can chew with GOG Galaxy at least with the way it's been implemented. There is probably a lot of resources going towards it to keep it competitive on the other OSes, it's probably not cheap and it's probably a drain on their resources. Maybe they wish they could go back and do something more along the lines of itch.io. Let ppl download and install/update their games and browse their store from the app and keep it at that. MP support and chat with friends is a lot more difficult than one would imagine (unless you're in that field). Even more so to maintain as things change.

Save these harsh words and such til a company is really out of line with how they treat Linux - like if they say something untrue about the Linux OS or actively misinform the public about what the OS can and can not do or those that make moves in the legal arena to make it harder for Linux to thrive.

I voted for the app for others but I'm not going to be using it when and if it comes out. Lutris and itch.io serve my needs well. I like how their shelf download library works.

I've got 11 games on STEAM, 50 on GOG, over 400+ directly from developers/mixed retail boxes, over 61 on HB, 9 on itch.io, 3 on GameJolt, 2 from Desura (living in the land of eternal backups now) that all work on Linux and that I paid for (I have ton more from freeware and such) - There is room for what we want and how we want and a bunch of places to get it.

If you (or anyone) really want GOG Galaxy on Linux, keep asking them what's up? How can you help (if you want to)? See if they need beta/alpha testers? Check in with the devs that do support Linux on their platform that can benefit from using Galaxy on Linux - See if they are interested in helping out to make it happen.

If you're not interested in none of that, keep it moving. Voice yourself in consideration of others but keep the harsh words for the real fight.

If you can't control your feelings enough to comment, then don't comment. That screams immaturity.

Many posts here have made some superb attempts at explaining GOG rationale behind their decision, and we should respect that.

I love GOG, they've been the only store I've purchased from for a loooong time just because of their professionalism, great support, and enforcing a standard installer on all games for Linux.

GNUmen to all of this!

Quoting: Alm888Well, let's be more impersonal. We all already knew GOG is utilizing zero cost policy towards Linux: no in-house ports, no attempts to persuade developers. Now, we have just another one added to this list: no additional expenses for Galaxy. And given GOG is the only one besides Steam to support regional pricing, it is still reasonable to get games there and not on Humble Store. Of course if Humble has Linux exclusives (DRM-free), then I will get them on Humble.

Kinda ironic "CD PROJECT S.A." is aiming to directly compete with Valve:
QuoteGOG.com business objectives
To create a catalogue of brand-new AAA releases fully supported by GOG Galaxy; to turn GOG Galaxy into a technological foundation upon which gamers can access videogames produced by CD PROJEKT RED and interact with one another.
while being cheapsakes. :P

But with all honesty… We asked to "bring existing Linux versions of games" and we got just that. There were no deal on GOG actually spending money on Linux-related development. No, if only there were no Galaxy binding in those recent multiplayer games…

Some of their SNK/Neo Geo games have Linux versions on HB but not on GOG.

Quoting: GuestSomehow this post made me really sad. I was expecting GOG Galaxy for Linux any time soon (as they wrote).

BTW GOG.com is now selling these "Pinata" things, where you get a random game. I bought 4 Pinatas and guess what: all games are Windows-only. Such a fail. Somehow did not expect that.

Ask them for refunds mate, and be sure to tell them why!

I forgot the name of the last event that I was a part of but I kept on getting Windows games as a prize and I emailed support and they kept on resetting the event prize thing for me until I got a Linux game. Took about 3 tries and 3 emails back and forth.

Excellent customer service on GOG's part.

Quoting: Guest200 games... But how do you update them? Even if you just install 10% it would be a lot of manual work. The thing is, nobody expects from GOG to offer all features on Linux, just the basics like install and update games. This is not really any effort for them, I don't believe them.

I don't have an issue with updating stuff manually, and would prefer it to any closed client. The main problem is not inconvenience, but whole games missing from GOG because of Galaxy.

I don't mind manually updating my games either. Would be nice if Steam gave us that option but I'm not holding my breath.

Quoting: migiziMaybe everyone shouldn't just assume they don't care or think the platform is crap. Maybe you should look at it from a business perspective. GOG has been short staffed for a long time. Just look at the current openings they have https://www.gog.com/work.

Try working at a software dev shop when you're short staffed. Things have to be put on the back burner for sanity sake. Everyone is already doing extra work to just try and stay afloat.

But again this community goes straight to assuming the worst and trying to paint anyone who doesn't give more than they have as anti-Linux.

^ This. GOG has Linux games for sale/free - The devs are getting support and $$$ for supporting Linux. It's a groovy time people. I think more us have to ask GOG how can we help them bring that client online, if you are really gungho for it.

Steam now has over 3,500 games for Linux, with GOG having over 700

Quoting: throghWell, what to say? Oh yes: Praising just more proprietary platforms helps, of course for a system based on user's freedom. :P

Being thankful for what exactly? The business decision from Steam / Valve? The half-hearted lie GOG is going to tell the user? No DRM? Very bad jokes and not the best arguments for a bright future. But yes: It's possible to praise that. Making every Linux-distribution to another copy of known paradigma.

Well, you can't have the cake and eat it. There are how many free-as-in-freedom games out there, that can even remotely compete with commercially made ones in terms of quality?

Yes, there is 0AD.

That's...it.

I hear you but also Xonotic.

What have you been playing on Linux lately and what do you think?

Xonotic - Freeware - Been introducing the game to my job, now I have co-workers and clients rocking it daily during lunch and rec time. I am setting up a 5 on 5 LAN game for the last 2 weekends of August @ my place. Been playing online with a few friends and it's good to see this game get some more love.

Awesomenauts - Steam - Giving this game a shot again since it went F2P. I got the original game for free awhile back from a Steam friend. It was fun but they stopped playing and then I stopped playing. Not sure why but the game seems like a lot more fun now. I have it setup on all of my HTPCs with Steam controllers @ the ready. I am unable to get the split/screen feature working, though.

The King of Fighters 2002 - Humble Bundle - Been playing this one daily. A little in the morning and some more @ night. I recently attend 3 retro tourney's in NYC and now this game is back on my daily play list. I have a Friday Rival match every week with a co-worker and it's been a blast to rediscover my combos and tricks with Ryo, Terry and Iori.

River City Ransom: Underground released on GOG with Linux support, some thoughts

Quoting: GuestThanks for letting me know! Is that also possible in local multiplayer?

Yes. That is how I play it with my kids.
