FTL: Faster Than Light has a new patch to fix some lingering issues
15 January 2019 at 9:31 am UTC

AUDIO FIX:

Adding this Help comment here as the problem affected this game ( FTL: Faster Than Light ) for me in late 2018, early 2019. I'm using Debian Linux 10 Buster (testing). On my system I have NVidia graphics, which has a displayport/hdmi audio device as well as motherboard audio. In the Gnome 3 desktop config panel, I set my preferred soundcard as the motherboard one. Practically all the games in Steam, and every application on the system uses the preferred soundcard according to this.

However, FTL didn't. Instead it would use the first loaded sound card on the system, which turned out to be the NVidia hdmi audio device. I tried lots of things before I hit upon the working solution.

The solution was this:
Run ALSA's aplay -l command to list the audio devices. In my case "card 0" was the NVidia HDMI device and "card 1" was the motherboard audio device.

Creat a new default configuration file for ALSA:
/etc/asound.conf

Add these lines to make "card 1" the default audio device (instead of "card 0")

pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
}

After this it might start working immediately, or you might need to reboot.

Noting that I was considering disabling the NVidia audio device (as an alternative solution) by disabling (blacklisting) relevant modules on startup, but it turned out that both my sound devices needed module snd_hda_intel to be loaded in order to work.

Quoting: F.Ultra
Quoting: Guest
Quoting: F.UltraIt only shows Windows and macOS now?! Was just going to purchase it when I noticed that the steamOS icon was gone.

I have installed it native for Linux right now.

From Steam? That is where it's only Windows and macOS right now (seams like I forgot to mention that it was on Steam that I saw it).

I'm not sure what happened to the SteamOS (Linux) icon in the Steam client for this game. From the sounds of this post it appeared, and then you are reporting that it isn't there. I can confirm that "right now, while writing this" the SteamOS icon is not present.

BUT, the game is in my library, and I am performing a native Linux install on it right now. Not Steam Play / Proton / running a Windows game on Linux.

I think this is a game that the developers have released as Linux native, but they aren't happy to fully support Linux so they are suppressing the SteamOS icon. (Like Facepunch did with Rust, quite recently. But that doesn't stop Rust running fine on Linux - I play that regularly, and get all the updates... on native Linux.)

Now.. to launch The Silent Age, and have a little play... It comes up with a nice little graphics settings config screen, and I'm choosing 3840x2160 resolution, non-windowed, Best settings.

Played it for 45 minutes. All running fine. Hope this info helps.

Got it ages ago in a bundle. Not played it yet. Glad that it has finally made the jump to our OS :)

Quoting: NezchanHave you tried Dicey Dungeons? I find it, too, scratches a similar itch with weird emergent combos and general one-more-turn-ness. Although it's very much in development, so while playable and fun it still has a ways to go.

Haha, yes, I'm already aware of this title and it is on my Wishlist. Still, thanks for bringing it up and other GOL readers will be able to go check that one out too.

Certainly been getting my money's worth with this game. 260 hours play so far (4 Jan 2019) ... and this is before it got Mod support and "even more" developer content (e.g. new characters). It has been very pleasant for me to see and experience each of the additions to the game since early access (e.g. when the Defect character got revealed).

Prior to "Slay The Spire" I was smitten by FTL: Faster The Light ( and here's the GOG Link )

Not saying that it is of similar level, but I recently began playing indie title "Frost" and this survival rogue-like card game is also scratching a similar itch (i.e. I recommend it too). Frost has a free, playable demo so you can have a try before blowing any cash.

Christmas Games Sales and the January Humble Subscription (with the hidden games being revealed on 4th Jan 2019) have not worked out too well for me this time. One big underlying reason is that I have amassed a very sizeable game collection, mostly favouring Linux titles. Inevitably, Humble's late reveals will (sometimes) contain (multiple) games that I already own.

In this particular case, I didn't own Wizard of Legend in the early reveals so decided to not pause this month, but to take it. (I didn't especially want the Windows early reveals, Just Cause 3 XXL and Project Cars 2 - Windows titles.)

During the Christmas Sales, I expanded my collection by a number of titles at nice discount, favouring Linux. Two of the titles I bought over Christmas - Observer and Sundered - Arrghhh! - They now turn up in the January bundle. It feels too much like I've bought them twice over now.

My "wins" were: Wizard of Legend, The Darkside Detective - Linux titles.
My "fails" were: Observer, Sundered, Regions of Ruin - Linux titles I own (and 2 I'd bought right before the Subs reveal).
My "not-wanteds" (Windows games, not previously owned): Just Cause 3 XXL, Project Cars 2, Qube 2.

Humble's Monthly Subscription works out better if (a) you favour Windows, and (b) do not own an excessive number of games.

Meanwhile, had I NOT bought Observer and Sundered just prior to the Reveal... I'd be patting myself on the back right now for getting a really great bundle. The word "Unlucky" certainly crops up here.

Here's my opinion on these upcoming titles mentioned in the article:

Probably insta-buy:

Serious Sam 4 - Really like the Serious Sam games
Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Very appealing, wishlist material:

Stoneshard - Already played a bit of the prologue demo and like it
Pathway - I like the Indiana Jones style and setting to this

Looks interesting:

Eastshade - looks like a nice calm, relaxing game with lots of exploration and eye-candy
We Happy Few
Overland
System Shock
Hellpoint

Titles that I'm also watching with interest, which weren't mentioned and might not come to Linux:

Dying Light 2 - If on Linux, would be an insta-buy.
Into The Breach - Sunset Games did say they'd port to Linux (eventually). Another insta-buy for me.
The Bard's Tale 4
Insomnia: The Ark
Underworld Ascendant
Iratus: Lord of the Dead
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones

I have just (today) grabbed The Bug Butcher on Steam at historical lowest price: 80% discount (£1.11).

Very impressed so far. Great animations, novel enemies, fast and decent game play - and all for an awesome price.

Valve have one more Steam Play update out before the end of 2018 with 3.16-6

Quoting: ThormackGuys, could you recommend some nice free-to-play windows games?

Never used Proton before and don't want to buy win games just for testing.

Surprised you've never accumulated any Windows titles from Bundles, e.g. Humble, Fanatical (Bundle Stars), or elsewhere.

Quoting: massatt212DOTA

DOTA has a native Linux version so it is not a suitable candidate for Steam Play / Proton.

Having a look at Steam's own Free To Play list, I searched on What's Being Played and here are a few titles that are not native Linux which you could consider:

Path of Exile, Warframe, Trove, Eve Online, Neverwinter, Quake Champions, Minion Masters, Gems of War, Fallout Shelter, Stronghold Kingdoms, Blockpost, Bit Heroes, Soda Dungeon, Pixel Puzzles Ultimate.

Personally I tried Fallout Shelter on Proton, only a few days after Proton was released and that worked fine.
