A general guide for the best practices of buying Linux games

As toward piracy, I don't think it's an issue on linux honestly, if there is game hacker on linux, it must be a very small minority, and I think they just do it for the challenge (the challenge itself must be very limited due the number of game protection...) The only problem I have nowadays when buying games is with DRM. When I was a kid, there was a Demo for every single game in the market, and you could try everygame before you decide to buy one. Every month, every magazine had a free game on top of that, sometime two, and sometime some very good ones. Some of them were offered like 6s cd with like 50's of demos.
With my cousin, and a school friends, at the end of the month we all used our demo cd, and we exchanged them, so we could try as much games as possible. And when someone will get birthday, their parents eventually will buy the game wanted. And one month later we could lend each other one game. Exemple, you lend me kingpin, I lend you quake 3. So it was how things were going. Studios were making big money, and we could even sell those game on secondhand shop. For instance half life is the game everyone ended to purchase for the multiplayer, same of call of duty united offensive, same as age of empires 2.
But nowadays with the online purchase entitled to an account. There no such thing, there is no more demo (or like one every 200games), you have the 2 hours try from steam, but it is very different than an unlimited time on a demo.
I think digital copies should be our property and that's why I try to buy as much game on gog. Unfortunalty their linux release are often late, if no release at all, so I have to go on steam or linux porter shop when they have one.
GOG offers the possibility with my friends for everyone to buy different games, and "lend" digitaly each other some of them. For instance last year I bought witcher 3 on release, and went to my friends' house to copy it on their PC. And the ones who played the game end up buying it with the extensions. Last month, a friend of mine bought everspace the other day and bring it to me on usb so I could try it. And as soon it is released on linux I will buy it cause I like that kind of game. But the contrary would never have happened. I would not have bought it cluelessly.
The prices of games should not be an issue for anyone nowadays with the constant offers. But it's just that most of digital shop are taking our purchase away from our hands. Microsoft is doing the same now with it's OS windows 10. How will people react if they had to log in into the elecricity supplier before turning on or off any light in the house when coming back from work? How will they react if they had to do the same with their car, and that one important morning of work, the servers of the supplier are down and they could not start their car because of that. I think it is not acceptable.
So we have to continue to support linux and drm free game. Buy it when we can afford it, and as said by Liam in this order of preference:
-GOG/Humble store
-Porters (Feral, VP, Aspyr...)
-Steam
and boycot the rest (in fact we don't have much choice :p)
I completly agree with this article.
The shops like G2A and stuff are barely legal. The authorities are too slow, and now people promote these shops, they even sponsors some gamers or twitch. They pretend to be marketplace with people selling individually keys, but they always have thousands of it.
Please linux people don't go that way. Editors will turn their back on us if we don't play the game. It is very hard to make a port even for a big editor, they can't put as many ressource that on windows. And if we linux user buy from discutable providers, then editors and porters on long term will just give up their efforts. It will be all wasted for linux.
I have seen previously user that did not know if their buy will count as linux sale (for instance physical buy), it's not the case. So good stuff to remind those who did not know about it, and for those who thinks this has no consequence.
Also I am probably preaching convinced users on GOL, but just wanted to point that again.

Why Linux games often perform worse than on Windows

Agreed. That's why I empty my wallet on linux ports and decide to not pick anymore game that has not linux support. I have been pleased by most ports despite sometime slight performance drop (the games are still fully playable without any bug so far). I can make graphical concessions, especially since the ports are getting better and better, sometimes even beating windows. We all are the actor of the future, not like superheroes at all, but simply as a wallets. That's how we are considered by major companies but also by politicians. Then if we are to be considered as such, the only way we can make things change, is to spend our money on product and companies that seems ethical and fair to us. Should I be tempted to buy rainbow six siege, forza horizon 3, battlefield 1? all protected with drm and sold at the highest prices in companies that consider stealing private data, specs sofwares.. all day long as a due for them.
It is not so easy, because nowadays we put our desire above anything else, and most of people will tell that they don't care about their private datas, and sometime that no such things as privacy should exists (social networks...). But as a translation of these big companies to the real world, would they accept to have someone in their house with the keys, recording everything and being there all day asking you questions about what you are doing, why are you doing it, when are you going to make love (How can we as editors minimize that time spent in bed in order to have more game time, that's the kind of questions discussed at the top of data studies)... I don't think that many will tolerate it, but they do tolerate it everyday in order to play the game made by these editors.
Will people accept to have less games, or restrict their windows buy at least to companies who does not behave like that? It is hard, games are a hobby, and people don't want to bother any question nowadays. Our lives are enough busy all day long. I can understand that choice. Also I don't know if they realise what it will mean for them in the future.
If not, what alternatives will they have? With only one choice monopoly platform who has all the right to behave disgustingly towards our privacy. In few years the bank account will be automatically debiting every month. I am quite sure many have noticed the side effects of windows 10. The OS quickly control over every action or tweaking done on the os, and put the shape wanted differently every 4months, with other problems incoming and not the slightest will to improve user experience.
In think it is in the interest of everyone to support linux gaming, and then to buy as much ported game as possible, even if you are on windows. How many games everyday on TV or in the shops are branded "PC", while it means "windows exclusive" (linux is also PC).
Sorry for the long answer.

It's a shame it works this way. I wonder then how can they come up with a 1% sale if they don't even count the sales made on linux. Plus the game offer on windows is like 4times bigger. So 4times more splited than on linux. I wonder how feral, aspyr and vp can manage to live with that. If you don't come on gamingonlinux in the forum, you won't be tell that info by steam. By the way if someone could tell me, if that's right that on feral store if you don't go on the linux page, sale count as mac as well? I read that on the forum a few weeks ago. My buy may have been counted as mac :s

Wow. I am already amazed by the mad max port. If the required specs are equivalent, I can imagine that the game will run the almost the same as on windows which is even more incredible. Really feral is doing magic with their linux port recently. I will buy no matter how it runs to support the effort, and because it is completly deserved.

I was not clear enough. I meant that on alien isolation you loose about 30%/40% perf, maybe even more if you are on AMD compared to windows. So if it is the same with this port, even a GTX970 will barely run on low @ 1080p. On windows, 1080p with a gtx970 you can not reach the 60fps average on normal settings.(between 40 and 50fps)
On ultra 1080p with a GTX970 you only have 30fps max. SO it is the worst port ever made on pc (because they dev it with console on first sight)
I meant if feral port does not perform better than the original, we will all play on minimum settings. Appart for those who have a gtx1080, they may reach 60fps on normal settings @ 1080p. So forget the 2k5 or 4k resolution.
I know graphics are not the most important thing. But I find it disturbing that the game cannot be played with at max settings with a 350€ graphic card, even more that a Titan X(pascal) barely reach 60fps on ultra @1080p. I would expect it to run the game at 4K ultra above 60fps. Nothing to do with feral though.

I wonder how the game perform on linux, because if there is a big gap like on alien isolation it may almost impossible to hit the 40fps average on normal settings, even with a GTX1080 on 1080p... It seeems it is one of the worst port of the century on pc, so unless feral find a way to get better perf on linux, it might be very hard to run the game outside the minimum settings.
Valve looking to contract experienced Mesa developers to work on the open source AMD driver for OpenVR

If all these good news continue, in the next coming years, open driver may become more powerfull than official driver and may even beat Nvidia proprietary. If AMD(Ati) feels this is good for them, it will bring a lot of change in the gaming industry. Who knows? Leting people passionate, and creative with open source, may leads to better stuff than proprietary. And if AMD even encourage it financially, they may have a huge reward in the end. We have to keep feet on the ground, but very great news overall!
Spray issue is more linked to hack than anything else. On cs 1.6 how many players there were compared to now? Like 1/100 1/1000? There was already so many hackers and cheaters that you had to play it on lan to be sure to have great games. This you have to take into account. But I agree with the stickers and stuff you can buy, the overall steam market and card stuff are stupid for me. I managed to buy myself some game with it, by selling items but i'm really not proud of it because. People lost a lot of money for actually something they just have to screenshot to possess it. But this is a complete different concern than the AMD open source driver here.
