I took me a while, but I finaly found settings to make the game look "okay" with "okay" average fps. I find it looking sharper than on ultra. (and it runs as fast as normal presets for me) Some effects are better on ultra, but you won't notice them that much while playing, and some of them I really don't like.
If like me you don't like the blurry and pixelated image caused by all FX used to give a photographic aspect to the game, you could try them and give your feedback:
-Texture Quality = Very High
-Texture Filtering (Anisotropic)= 8
-Shadow Quality = Medium
-Contact Hardening Shadows = Off
-Temporal Anti Aliasing = On
-Motion Blur = Off
-Depth of Field = Off
-Bloom = On
-Lens Flare = Off
-Volumetric Lighting = On
-Surface Scatering = On
-Cloth Physics = On
-Ambient Occlusion = On
-Tessalation = Off
-Parallax Occlusion Mapping = High
-Screenspace Reflections = On
-Sharpen = On
-Chromatic Aberration = Off
-Level of Detail = Very High
There might be a way to tweak it a bit more to improve quality without loosing fps.
Final Result:
Min: 28.2fps
Average: 45.2fps
Maximum: 69.7fps
Ultra settings was at 34.9 on average.
Specs: GTX970, i7 2600 (@3,9GHz), 12GB Ram, 1440*900 resolution

I keep the game, but honestly if I knew the game would be so demanding for the quality of the rendering displayed, I would have straight give 50€ to feral but not one peny to square for that port. The port of the port is quite excellent on the other hand. If I can play with the presets I've picked above 40, it should be "okay" from what I expected. But I expected normal to actually look nice which is absolutly not the case.

Not your fault Feral, I really aplaude your performance. I'm trying to disable all the useless effects that eats lot of fps, and increase texture quality, Anisotrop and details, I think can have the same perf as on normal with adjusted settings. But the game itself looks really blurry. I just hate so much Square Enix right now.
My setup:
i7-2600
GTX970
12GB DDR3
Regular HDD
1440*900 19" screen
So far with normal presets:
With high preset and I think one or two options deactivated:
With personnal presets:

Well I'm totally disappointed. 40fps average on normal settings, with anisotropic x2 (i'm used to minest x8 or x16 and at least x2 msaa).
Metro last light looks twice better with twice more fps and SSAAx3. I'll buy this game in 5 or 6 years when they will sell computer abble to run it maxed out. I'd like to support Feral, but in this case it is just totally against Square. All the review and topic discussed I've seen, was like I have a titan x (pascal) or gtx1080 and I can't max it out. I could not believe it, but all the benchmarks confirmed it. I had hope though, as the comments defending DE:MD were like, don't worry about it, the game looks awesome, they have their own effect, you don't need MSAA in these game. These are pure lies. It's like saying stairs are looking the same a skate ramp...
That's for me, the best port ever made by feral, but the worst port ever made on any plaftorm by square enix. It is way worse than GTA IV. I play games since I'm 10 years old. And almost done only that of my life. I have never ever witness such a bad quality graphic game with such low fps, and demanding so many ressources. Back in 2010 I could run every game better than this DE:MD with only a 500€ computer... Even in high the game does not look any better. I will try ultra to see if there is something graphically impressive to see.
I feel so bad for feral right now. I hoped the recommended spec would be ok for playing with "high" presets or normal. Uglyness is the only word that come. I see all the new effects, they are nice to see, but I've never seen such a huge aliasing in any video game ever. The effect are of no use, because they could be good if the image quality was nice.
Recommended should be more like;
At least double xeon motherboard.
Titan X SLI
as many ram as you want (it won't make any difference up to 8)
and double SSD in RAID 0.

A GTX1080 on windows can run the game on high preset with dx12 @1440p (near 60fps), but can't run on ultra (40fps +)
On linux 1440p the game should still be playable on high, but with a bit of tweak (like disabling stuff related to shadows).

Very good report and very good port. The perf difference between windows and linux is about the same difference as what opengl can do vs dx11/12. The game is downloading for me, but from what you posted Liam, I think this is mind blowing port.

At least Feral is realistic, compared to what is recommended in general by editors. As a reminder on windows a GTX1080 will only give you 60fps on ultra settings at only 1080p and without MSAA activated.
Recommanded gtx1060 is about a gtx970, so it's allright for this game. i7 and i5 are quite similar performancewise in gaming. If we can play in high with this hardware, it's a big achievement. If it's the case, I guess the perfs then should be close like the ones from dawn of war 2 against windows!

A general guide for the best practices of buying Linux games

As toward piracy, I don't think it's an issue on linux honestly, if there is game hacker on linux, it must be a very small minority, and I think they just do it for the challenge (the challenge itself must be very limited due the number of game protection...) The only problem I have nowadays when buying games is with DRM. When I was a kid, there was a Demo for every single game in the market, and you could try everygame before you decide to buy one. Every month, every magazine had a free game on top of that, sometime two, and sometime some very good ones. Some of them were offered like 6s cd with like 50's of demos.
With my cousin, and a school friends, at the end of the month we all used our demo cd, and we exchanged them, so we could try as much games as possible. And when someone will get birthday, their parents eventually will buy the game wanted. And one month later we could lend each other one game. Exemple, you lend me kingpin, I lend you quake 3. So it was how things were going. Studios were making big money, and we could even sell those game on secondhand shop. For instance half life is the game everyone ended to purchase for the multiplayer, same of call of duty united offensive, same as age of empires 2.
But nowadays with the online purchase entitled to an account. There no such thing, there is no more demo (or like one every 200games), you have the 2 hours try from steam, but it is very different than an unlimited time on a demo.
I think digital copies should be our property and that's why I try to buy as much game on gog. Unfortunalty their linux release are often late, if no release at all, so I have to go on steam or linux porter shop when they have one.
GOG offers the possibility with my friends for everyone to buy different games, and "lend" digitaly each other some of them. For instance last year I bought witcher 3 on release, and went to my friends' house to copy it on their PC. And the ones who played the game end up buying it with the extensions. Last month, a friend of mine bought everspace the other day and bring it to me on usb so I could try it. And as soon it is released on linux I will buy it cause I like that kind of game. But the contrary would never have happened. I would not have bought it cluelessly.
The prices of games should not be an issue for anyone nowadays with the constant offers. But it's just that most of digital shop are taking our purchase away from our hands. Microsoft is doing the same now with it's OS windows 10. How will people react if they had to log in into the elecricity supplier before turning on or off any light in the house when coming back from work? How will they react if they had to do the same with their car, and that one important morning of work, the servers of the supplier are down and they could not start their car because of that. I think it is not acceptable.
So we have to continue to support linux and drm free game. Buy it when we can afford it, and as said by Liam in this order of preference:
-GOG/Humble store
-Porters (Feral, VP, Aspyr...)
-Steam
and boycot the rest (in fact we don't have much choice :p)
I completly agree with this article.
The shops like G2A and stuff are barely legal. The authorities are too slow, and now people promote these shops, they even sponsors some gamers or twitch. They pretend to be marketplace with people selling individually keys, but they always have thousands of it.
Please linux people don't go that way. Editors will turn their back on us if we don't play the game. It is very hard to make a port even for a big editor, they can't put as many ressource that on windows. And if we linux user buy from discutable providers, then editors and porters on long term will just give up their efforts. It will be all wasted for linux.
I have seen previously user that did not know if their buy will count as linux sale (for instance physical buy), it's not the case. So good stuff to remind those who did not know about it, and for those who thinks this has no consequence.
Also I am probably preaching convinced users on GOL, but just wanted to point that again.
