D9VK developer is working on allowing DXVK to help Linux ports for Direct3D to Vulkan

Might be a good idea, since on proton, a vulkan native renderer can be a slideshow, while DX11 with DXVK is fast.

Quoting: 1xokIf the new Rockstar Launcher runs, we can play RDR2 under Linux next month. Thanks to Vulkan probably no performance loss compared to Windows. Who would have thought that possible a few years ago?
I tried a game with a vulkan renderer, but the DX11 renderer using DXVK was pretty good, and vulkan was a slide show. It was: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1096200/The_Orville__Interactive_Fan_Experience/ [External Link]

I mean, Just Cause 4 [External Link] is FREE2PLAY this weekend..
I don't know the game or the hype around the game. Tried it, worked fine on a GTX960M (zotac-sn970).
Still have to try the RX580 eGPU.

Anyway, GTA V just works again \0/.

Steam for Linux can now run games in a special container

Quoting: ShmerlIs it using lxc [External Link]?
If you mean the kernel side of LXC, yes. Those are called namespaces and containergroups.
LXC is a userspace commandline interface to the kernel API.

For instance: you don't have to use LXC to setup a second seperate IP stack with it's own firewalling, all you need is to use ip (from iproute(2)).

Quoting: NeverthelessFlatpak is a container solution that installs programs into sandbox directories and isolates them from your system.
Flatpak does not sandbox applications *unless* the flatpak requests it. It would be interesting once it starts enforcing it.
I don't know how steam flatpak is packaged though. With or without a request for containerizing.

I feel a bit bad for Feral. But I guess for a year+ old game, deep sales are to be expected.
Heh, I already bought it :-(.
Amazing though how good it looks on a thinkpad T430 with an RX580 as eGPU. The settings were automagically pushed at high and even on 4k it was more than a slideshow (on 1080p it was good to play)
Who needs PCIe3x16 (16GB/s) when PCIe2x1 (500MB/s) seems to suffice...
Bard's tale IV however is a slide show on the RX580 as well as the GTX960M.
I've noticed on my proton adventures that DXVK+DX11 is way better than native vulkan on some of these engines.

Finally some real improvements. It always bothered me to just download and run 3rd party applications on my machine. But locking them down into their own container is absolutely necessary to get out of this security hell that's called steam.
Don't get me wrong, I love steam. But it is a security nightmare.
Any app can grab your / and send it to $someoneelse because there is 0 checks on that.
They don't even have to hide the scripts.
There are so many developers on steam, you can't keep them in check.
But containerizing it is what's really necessary, and it has a lot of benefits.

Curiously, Steam Broadcasting settings now actually show up in the Linux client. Before this Beta update, the Broadcast settings page always said "Steam Broadcasting is not currently supported on this operating system" but that message is gone and replaced with the ability to turn it on. Not that it works, testing this morning didn't allow people to watch me or me to watch them. Will be interesting to see if they are working on getting it supported or if it the settings were enabled in the Linux client by mistake.
It was there in 2015 already on steamos: Big picture always had the option to turn it on. It just doesn't do anything, and doesn't let you know it doesn't work until you actually try to watch it. The visitors would get the message that the player did not have a system that was capable to perform broadcasting.
The desktop mode just said you don't have a system capable to do it.
