The latest Steam Hardware Survey shows Linux market-share has declined again
3 Oct 2017 at 8:28 am UTC

I bought a GPD WIN to run linux. As it comes pre-installed with windows (you need it to downgrade the BIOS to be able to use features like OTG which is not at all supported on windows), I gave it a try. Even installed steam.
My conclusion: even with a disconnected system like the gpd win it managed to fuck up the steam settings on my steam machine (I lost every steam controller setting that I did not export).
To install gta IV I had to jump through more hoops than wine on linux.
To install gta SA I even had to jump through even more hoops.
Then this constant nagging of that I have to activate it, and when I try that it says I need to buy a license...
I forgot what an easy life it is, living in a GNU world.
I do feel sorry that I even considered trying steam. But fortunately I did not get to participate in the steam hardware survey. If it did I would be rather sour, as I have not participated ever since I started using steam native on linux.
Anyway: off with that crap. I can't believe windows can actually be functional to some people.

According to netmarketshare Linux hit 6.91% market share last month, higher than Mac

To be clear: the stats are from sites that have embedded the stat counters of these sites.
It just might be that a few more linux friendly sites have just added these counters :-)

Quoting: pbAre Chromebooks even available in Europe? Maybe in some of the western countries, but certainly not where I live.
MediaMarkt NL has 15 chromebooks on their website, out of 313 laptops in total. But yeah, about as 'western' as you can get.
I've bought my last chromeos devices from chromeit.
My very first from amazon.uk, since I have a preference for arm, and arm is pretty fast without any heat production, unlike intel.
I now have 4 samsung chromebooks (exynos 5250 2x, 1x exynos 5430, and 1x rockchip) and one asus intel i3 chromebox. Anything with intel atom is just a waste of money and power.
I also have a GPD Win, on the verge of having windows 10 completely wiped (needed it to downgrade, played with it for a week, hit a wall, almost killed someone... A nice reminder of why I never ever want to do something with windows again).

Anyway: The nicest thing is that Mac is keeping stable, while windows lost big time.
What happened these last 2 months? Steam machine? What?

Edit: The august figures have already been checked, so those are already correct. They check the figures of last month in the beginning of the month.

Quoting: inlinuxdudeIt gives one hope that their Linux/SteamOS push may indeed not be over yet!
If you only subscribe to the bugtracking of steam on linux you know they are working hard...
And I mean very hard.
And you can find the valve people communicating on irc with linux vive developers.
Valve really is involved with linux. You just have to approach the developer side, not the consumer side.
I think just like Samsung, the R&D budget of valve >>> PR budget. Any cut they take from a sale, a part of it is going to linux development.
But to be clear: their goal is to get the ultimate free gaming platform. Not make it run on linux because it is cool. The fact that they choose linux is because you can develop and shape it's future. Make it work. Not like other platforms that you have to fix all your incompatibilities because some ass decided to close down some api's to hide bugs in other software they create.
(I am not going to mention UNC paths and word...)

Valve makes adjustments to user reviews due to review bombing with 'histogram' charts
20 Sep 2017 at 2:57 pm UTC

Quoting: BeamboomUser "reviews" are usually just a description on how they perceived the game. Furthermore you don't even know if the writer has understood the genre at all, nor if they have the proper experience to have anything related to compare with.

Quoting: EikeThe only problem left is judging if their fun will be my fun, too.
Exactly. That is the problem. And with that problem, it renders the chatter they call "user reviews" pretty much worthless.

Quoting: EikeWhen I want deeper information, I read game magazines.
And that is a suggestion I fully support!

I take Ark as an example... every time an update comes at least 50% of the haters are going to say they want their money back...
Ark really is the best example on how toxic a community can get if it grows too big.
Yes, there is a lot of things wrong with ark, especially for linux. But if you see the hate reviews on a timeline you will always see a release date followed by a lot of hate.
And there are a lot of other games too with hatereviews.

If I look at a game, I first sort reviews on positive to negative to get a clear view of the nice reviews. Then I go into the community discussions.
I only look for 3 things: 1) positive reviews, 2) abandon were messages in the community, 3) linux problems.
If I have to look at the negative reviews I'd rather go outside for a walk. <salty>Most people are too stupid to enjoy a game</salty>.

Edit: typos.
And one more PS:
I sometimes get so fed up of hate reviews (not negative reviews, but hate reviews), I just sort them on negative to positive, sort out the hate, and mark them as not useful.

One of Valve's choices of games to highlight for Steam Machines is more than a little silly

Quoting: Purple PuddingI'm sad about it, Ark seemed to be a great game. I don't own it yet, I'll wait, for Ark or for another great game with dinosaurs (can you suggest me one beside the old but great Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, which is probably playable on Wine?).
I love ark so much I see through it's current state. But the current state is that I do not recommend it to linux users.
If I can recommend ark to linux users, I will be punching liam to try it. But then again, he would probably have tried it.
Anyway: still 1.5 months to go before we are at release + 2 months.

Quoting: ArdjeDid no one get that crash on EAC? It crashes for me when it tries to do ssl negotiations. I can't find a log about the crash though. It just stops.
Now and then, but it goes away.
I needed to use the hotfix posted in july to make it work again. That was actually the last time I looked at it. And that is all *your* fault due to giving it a good review ;-).

The season pass is also full price even for those that already bought scorched earth. I would at least expect them to discount the season pass if you already bought scorched earth.

Sounds like Killing Floor 2 won't come to Linux any time soon

Quoting: TheRiddickOh another Unreal engine based game gets removed from the Linux list, WHAT A AMAZING SURPRISE THAT I NEVER SAW COMING... /sarcasm...
As far as I know all UE engines have linux support. The first engine even had glide support next to opengl. And the glide support (or glide itself) was superior to opengl.
