I briefly read that comment out of the corner of my eye before reading the end of the article that made it clear you played together.
It was very confusing at first.

We didn't play it together, it's a single player game. You can, however, name your duplicants (people) ;)

Regarding the spidertron, I don't know the details, but of course the 3D "version" of this game, "Fortresscraft Evolved" has had a spidertron sentry robot thing for quite a while. I wonder how much these two titles play off each other?
