Skullgirls Developers Detail What's Going On With The Linux Port
17 Sep 2014 at 4:28 pm UTC

Quoting: omer666Still, I think that if it's got people paying for it, there must be a professional, paid-for port afterwards. Also, I'm sorry to put it this way, but putting a volunteered port (costless) as a stretch goal (which raises money), isn't it an enormous mistake? You get money for a port you don't finance. I just think it's weird.
Linux was NOT listed in the stretch goals. In this case, Linux as a strech goal probably would have been the best course of action, since then there should have been specific funds set aside for the porting, making up for what may be total lack of cross-platform experience internally at Lab Zero. That would have been one reasonable way to approach Linux support, the other having been to go the volunteer route but explain it during the campaign.

Still, I think the "backlash from the very vocal Linux community" has already gotten accross any constructive criticism there was to get across, and we should stick with courses of action that won't end up with us getting a counter-backlash from Indie devs (who might not even want to touch Linux if every mistake is flamed endlessly, and I wouldn't blame them):
  • politely ask for refunds

  • or give the volunteer team a decent chance

If I were a backer, I'd definitely go with #2 first. I've argued before that devs who don't know a thing about Linux should just get help from the community, and I truly believe it can work.

Worlds of Magic Strategy Game Released On Steam Early Access

Looks like it has a mix of a few different genre's mixed in with it for good measure too, As not only will you be turn-based battling, but you found cities, raise armies, research and cast spells, hire powerful heroes, and create powerful magical artefacts. All in one tight package.
That sounds like Heroes of Might and Magic. Is this game like Heroes of Might and Magic?
There's a lot in common with HoMM, and I think fellow HoMM fans should give it a try. As a backer I tried an early combat demo and that was promising.

Less than 4 grand now, with almost 2 days left -- like I said, right on track for success on the final day :D

Speaking of turn-based RPGs that I backed, Worlds of Magic is supposed to have a beta Linux build very soon, and I'm looking forward to that! They released the early alpha for backers on Linux, so they are really supporting Linux as promised, but there is some issue with the beta build that they need to clear up before pushing it to Steam Early Access.

Quoting: zimplex1I've never been too interested in their previous titles, but this is something I'm interested in... So I really hope it works for them. It looks like it's a very ambitious step for them as an MMORPG is a very big task. Plus as of right now I am not aware of any MMORPG's for Linux.
I have played another one called Ryzom, that I wanted to like, but it wasn't really to my taste -- too much boring farming of certain mobs trying to get mats for crafting decent eq. My local Linux gaming buddy wanted to know if I helped Frogdice write the update about "not your typical MMO" [External Link] because it promises to avoid so many of my pet peeves in other MMOs ;)

Quoting: NyamiouThe campaign really need a boost, at the current rate they are not going to make it.
That's totally true, at the current rate, but as a fairly veteran crowdfunder I can tell you the momentum is just starting to build again at this point in the campaign, with a make-or-break last couple days in which it's more likely to fund than not.

Sidekick has the most realistic prediction algorithms among the kickstarter tracking sites
http://sidekick.epfl.ch/campaign/1287881026-stash-no-loot-left-behind-pc-mac-linux-consoles [External Link]
and even it started predicting 95% success because there has been so much progress during the typically "dead" middle half of the campign -- up to 85% before the 48-hour reminders from kickstarter have gone out to remind all those who like to decide at the end whether to bother backing. You'd be surprised what a big boost that can be for campaigns that are deemed "close" and thus people realize they can make a real difference and are motivated to back.

This is another project I've backed (also has turn-based combat and RPG theme, but single-player)
http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/1878147873/hero-u-rogue-to-redemption/#chart-daily [External Link]
it needed 8 * Stash-goal, so don't look at the absolute figures but look at the shape of the curve, how the final 3 days each got about as much as Day 2 of the project, a lot more than any days in the comparatively slow middle half of the project

and here is a game project that had an even bigger boost in funds at the end, with 28% coming in the last few days (almost mirroring the first 3 days!)
http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/1949537745/armikrog/#chart-daily [External Link]

Now look at the Stash curve, which is just starting to turn up after some slow time (memorial day weekend + Pax + Dragoncon lead to a really slow week 1st week of September)
http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/frogdice/stash-no-loot-left-behind-pc-mac-linux-consoles/#chart-daily [External Link]
and notice that 2 more days like Day 2 would lead to success.

So it's gonna be a close one, but still doable!

New Humble Weekly Bundle (5 Linux Games Out Of 7)

Quoting: sevThis latest release is nice for being semi-cross platform, but I'd like to see more effort from them before I fall back into throwing my money at them.
I spend most of my gaming money on kickstarters now -- it used to be that buying Humble Bundles was the best way to help ensure Indie games got ported to Linux, but now there are lots of Indie teams inspired to support Linux because of solid support from Linux users who back them

Yes original Unwritten Tales was really memorable, made me really happy to see a sequel project appear on kickstarter
