The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 - Chapter 1, Released For Linux

I think I'll do basic checking that it runs on my system & then wait for the full game to be out.

Of course, I thought the same thing about Broken Age, until Cheeseness persuaded me to go ahead and play the 1st half already...

Proprietary operating systems like Windows and Mac are so painful for me to use, that I would not be using computers much if something like Linux had not come along. When I go against my normal policies and try to help someone get something interesting done on Windows or Mac, I normally end up getting frustrated and giving up. Basically, I hate "black boxes" that you have spend a ton of time reverse-engineering in order to understand! An open system like Linux is comparatively so inviting for someone who wants to learn, experiment, and customize.

I always spend a bit of extra money buying computers that have Linux pre-installed, so that my money is going to support people in our Free Software community instead of any money going to the control freaks at Microsoft or Apple. There is no extra copy of windows lying around, so dual-booting for some super-special windows-only game is not even an option.

Don't forget Distance as a fourth variation, and that one is actually in beta already (and playable, though one crash so far this afternoon)

Liam, don't forget Sunrider... you were the one who talked me into trying it by pointing out it was more than just a visual novel in an earlier article (features fun turn-based space combat). They managed to get the graphics and audio nicely polished thanks to a kickstarter.

Quoting: fleskI'd be interested to know what you think of campaigns where only Windows and/or Mac is a goal for PC but where they also target another platform you might own, like Wii U, Android, iOS, PS4 or XBone. I've backed some of those for a Wii U/Android version in the past and I'm currently tempted by Adventures of Pip, but on the other hand I don't feel right about supporting further segregation between Windows/Mac and Linux on PC.
I'm not interested in backing anything without Linux support, because supporting Indie devs who are willing to support Linux is a big part of what makes backing rewarding for me. By investing time and energy in the early part of a project when it really counts, we can be 10 times as helpful as an ordinary windows gamer so that Indie devs are happy to do solid Linux ports for us Linux backers, without worrying about when the SteamOS sales are going to start kicking in to boost Linux sales figures.

"Check out the awesome linux gaming site he is a core part of: Gaming on Linux."

In comparison, I just can't get enthusiastic about backing teams who have such little interest in cross-platform development that they charge huge stretch goals for Linux, indicating they really don't want to bother learning how to debug Linux builds, or pick one of the non-Linux engines when there are so many proper cross-platform engines available nowadays

Quoting: FergleFerglesonAnd still looking for any decent, *native* linux MMOG - but not holding my breath.
Not sure what your requirements are for "decent", but I'm keeping a close eye on (and backing, for that matter) an Indie MMORPG coming out next year called Stash: No Loot Left Behind [External Link]

  • turn-based RPG party combat

  • IMM-like/DM-like participation by the devs to host world events, with player participation having real influence on story-lines

  • deep world lore developed over 18 years of their MUD

  • Ultima-Online-inspired MMO community features like crafting and player housing

Stash also doesn't feature:

  • bind on pickup

  • question marks / exclamation points to find quests

  • Groundhog-day world, e.g. big bad bosses that respawn while you're still celebrating victory over them

However as an Indie game, it also doesn't feature AAA-priced graphics, though they do have some charm in my opinion

Broken Sword 3 under wine, because it's about time I get caught up and play Broken Sword 5 (which is native, with one of the main devs developing on Linux! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/revolutionsoftware/broken-sword-the-serpents-curse-adventure/posts/307066 [External Link] )
