Opinion: Can Linux Be A Viable Gaming Platform? Thoughts From A Sympathetic Game Developer

As a developer, do not claim to support more than you actually do. If you only packaged the game for Linux without even running it, state so. If you only can afford to run it on Ubuntu using NVidia drivers to make sure it starts, be upfront about this. Try not to use vague terms as “Linux version”, don’t be afraid to brand it as “Ubuntu version” or “SteamOS version” (if you are testing on these OS of course). In the latter case, I hope that Valve will start a certification program to help provide a consistent experience
This is gold. It's also something that should be very obvious for developers to do, but a lot don't. Sadly, when a developer does state they only support say "Nvidia" you then get the AMD camp claiming the developer is rubbish or something.
As an AMD user, I'd probably still buy a game having "Tested on" list with only NVidia cards, long as the developer is still willing to work with AMD users to fix major bugs (with the understanding that such users must be patient, it won't be high priority and might take a while). I can be patient, not one of those who is offended at having to wait until after the general release.

Point-And-Click Adventure 'Anna's Quest' Released On GOG And Steam For Linux

Quoting: fleskYes, I'll report back once I've finished it. So far, I don't think there's any cause for concern, since the protagonist is a very capable young girl, who is in control of her own fate. The puzzles I've encountered can also be solved by logical thinking, and I have yet to resort to trial and error.

(I think I also owe you a review of Alum, and hope to get around to that one of these days.)
Thank you, adventurous Linux buddy!

Point-And-Click Adventure 'Anna's Quest' Released On GOG And Steam For Linux

Quoting: tkoniczI really enjoy Adventures, but the Daedalic-Games were always rather disappointing. The "humor" of Deponia is really strange (proud to be an asshole), even sexist and racist at times, and many riddles in most of their Games are flawed.
Flesk, would you let us know after you're finished if any of this applies to Anna's Quest? And also whether it has a solid ending?

Quoting: Segata SanshiroI have a lot of these games, and half I didn't realise were Kickstarted.
Crowdfunding really is good for Linux gaming, even if it's not for everybody. The tighter one's budget, the harder it is to justify taking the risk of trying to be a patron of the arts, rather than just a consumer of already-funded creative works...

Quoting: muntdefemsAlthough I assume The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 will oust one of them as soon as I get it and play it. :)
BOUT 2 was SOOOOOO good right up to the end, when they stopped it with a cliffhanger. I will be quite frustrated if they don't get around to making the sequel in the near future -- it would be annoying if more dev teams start picking up that terrible habit from Ragnar Tørnquist.

Sony Is Creating A List Of Crowdfunding Projects To Gauge Interest

In other words, the article's real point is a pretty good one... regardless of whether Sony's involvement in crowdfunding is for the better or worse, a lot of us would be happy to see Aspyr and Feral get funded via crowdfunding for porting work that would otherwise be considered too much of a budget risk by the IP owners.

Nice, Hero U ended up doing better than predicted at time of writing, ending at 1896 backers and $126k (counting paypal). Still a bit short of the most important goal however...

If we come up short of this $130,000 stretch goal, perhaps no one will know about them and the world will be swallowed up in Darkness!
It's possible that more paypal backers will swoop in to save the day before it's too late http://hero-u.com/stores/ [External Link]

Maybe.

The Steam Hardware Survey For May Is Here, It’s Not All Doom & Gloom

There is a good chance that Steam Boxes will out-perform competing consoles in the long run, because open source, with a strong company like Valve to invest in it, has been a winning combination in field after field where performance matters more than marketing.

Example 1: supercomputers

* 1998 was first time Linux computer was ranked #1
* starting with 2004 Linux computers have completely owned #1 rank
* over 90% of the current top 500 computers run Linux
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOP500 [External Link]

Example 2: stock markets

* London stock exchange is built on Linux
* Tokyo stock exchange is built on Linux
* New York stock exchange is built on Linux

Example 3: leading internet companies

Think of the companies handling the most traffic in the world - places like twitter, facebook, google, amazon. They built their empires on a foundation of open source + custom internal code.

Unless something unexpectedly bad happens to Valve, there is no reason they can not turn SteamOS into something very successful like Google has done with android and ChromeOS. It just takes time.

While waiting for that to happen, try not to stress too much over little ups-and-downs in percentages, and how accurate the surveys are.

Brian Fargo Crowdfunds For Classic RPG Series Sequel "The Bard's Tale"

Quoting: ShmerlNo, the satirical Bard's Tale isn't bad - it's a very funny game and is a great self contained story (for me it was the game of the year when it came out for Linux DRM-free). I guess what others meant is that it shouldn't be viewed as a sequel to the Bard's Tale trilogy. I don't think inXile ever viewed it in such light anyway.
Aha, gotcha...thanks.
Yes right, that game really should have had an entirely different name.

Normally, you get a new addition to a series that keep only the name (and nothing else) when some other company has bought the right to the name, and the person hired to lead the project would really prefer do their own thing than be faithful to an existing series. Frankly I never even bought the 2004 game when it came to linux because I was too disappointed it wasn't a proper sequel like this [External Link].
