Valve officially confirm a new version of 'Steam Play' which includes a modified version of Wine

I have a question/hypathetical question feral and vp would it not make sense for valve to buy both or one because then if a developer wants a linux port and they want to use feral gabe gets all the cash from point of contract to point of sale minus development overhead which if they bought feral they would gain the rights to use their tools for the port jobs they do. This would 1 create a very skilled linux software house within valve and 2 makes valve able to make linux more attractive to develop on perhaps by lowering the cut valve takes at point at sale for linux ports.

Meh maybe to much theorising there but it is going to be interesting to see what happens regarding Feral and VP i would say aspyr but they gave up on linux ages ago so i gave up on them.

Quoting: GuestJust really want to point out that Valve see and fund things that are very useful, and that's not to be underestimated, but I personally dislike the treatment that it's all and entirely Valve doing everything.
It's hard to understand your point of view!
My question is why did the winehq developers not take the burden to make wine an out of the box feeling?

Don't take me wrong, I know howto use wine and my few windows games I have do run well with wine from winehq.
Currently more windows games run with newest wine than proton. But this will change in the next months.

Simply click install in the Steam Client and it configures the game for you automatically is what Linux needs - not all Linux users are geeks.
Because if you want an out of the box feeling and one click install before steam there was lutris or playonlinux both work without you having to jack shit other than click. I get what your saying what valve has done will appeal to more people because its super low effort you login into steam install a game and see if it has decent enough performance to play. I do get that arguement but knowing what is happening under the hood and therefore potential fixes is more helpful to the community that shrugging your shoulders and going meh next game.

So tested Dishonoured and Skyrim so far both work fine and with controller support performance isnt brilliant i ll be honest if you normally play at 1080p chances are you are going to have to dip it down to 900p to get playable frame rates but they are not whitelisted yet and room for further improvement. I have 386 steam games in my library many from my time dual booting or back about 4 years ago when i was windows only.If anyone has a game they must know if works if i have it ill be happy to say if its playable or not

Quoting: Whitewolfe80The code has not been tampered with no code injection has taken place they havent(sic) re written direct x to get it to work so they shouldnt(sic) have any legal grounds.
Yeah, sure. This didn't stop Oracle® from suing Google® for its Java™ API implementation.
Quoting: GuestStop with the FUD. Even if they sue they won't get anywhere. WINE infringes on no copyright, plus it has existed for 2 decades, legally they have lost the right to pursue anything now.
Even if a court ultimately rejects all claims, this can take ages and Valve®'s reputation will be tarnished. And, more importantly, the court can forbid any Valve®'s economical activity in the US of America during the process in order to prevent any possible further violations. By the time Microsoft® will be forced to pay reparation it will be useless because Valve® will be bankrupt.
And please, don't shoot the messager. I don't work for Microsoft®; all I want is for people to stop drinking Valve®'s kool-aid. Why are most people assuming Microsoft® won't retaliate? Be it a legal process or constant and rapid API changes in order to break compatibility? All of the previous Microsoft®'s history suggests otherwise.
Also sorry i missed this before you honestly think a corporation the size of valve did not lawyer up to find out if this was legal before they sank a dime into development of dxvk they dont order pens from a new supplier without checking it out. Its called due diligence if Valve were stupid enough to plough ahead and not think of every possible angle people could come at them not to mention sinking cash into the project, valve are many things stupid is not one of them.

Quoting: liamdaweTried Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and yup, works like any other game. Tried S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat (not on Valve's official list) and also worked like a dream.

Sadly, Skyrim Special Edition didn't give me any NPC voices, so that was a bit of a bust for now.

Doom is going to take forever to download, so I think it might be time to get some sleep and gather my thoughts...
Play Skyrim the normal version with the hd texture pack ran no problem for me with full controller support the special edition is problematic due to changes in the game code and new texture mapping etc

Quoting: Alm888So, in case Valve in fact gets somewhere with its small WINE trick…

How long will it take for Microsoft® to sue WINE and Valve® for copyright infringement regarding Windows™ API and unlicensed DirectX™ implementation?

After all, WINE was tolerated only as long as it was relatively useless. I dobt Microsoft® will allow someone to chew off some 20…30% of its market share with basically its own API.
Who said wine was tolerated only because it was "useless" Wine is a translation tool it merely converters instruction sets into code that linux can understand dxvk basically the same it takes dx calls converts them in real time to code that vulcan can understand. The code has not been tampered with no code injection has taken place they havent re written direct x to get it to work so they shouldnt have any legal grounds.

Quoting: liamdaweUpdate from Valve to me:
Hey Liam, the normal algorithm is in effect, so if at the end of the two weeks you have more playtime on Linux, it'll be a Linux sale. Proton counts as Linux.
Excellent.
Oh wow that is excellent good so this could be the move that makes devs think about native linux ports if they see a big enough profit margin mmmm

Quoting: liamdaweSo...Skyrim when?
Techinically now since you can whitelist anygame and it already works on wine out the box with controller support (only tested non hd version will test with valve wine as soon as i can get it to work at all)
