Valve posted a statement on the New York lootbox lawsuit

But I don't think that's actually relevant. It's still a loot box at the end of the day, so I think they're right to point it out.
Also, I don't think Valve was entirely positioning it as "they're doing it, so we can too", it was more just pointing out the inconsistency of how gambling laws are applied.
I didn't know about the Chinese law requiring odds to be displayed. That's awesome.

Quoting: BladePupperThe cards you get are used to play the actual game whereas the skins from say CS2 are basically only used to cash in and maybe pay for a steam game.Agree with most of your post except this bit. MtG packs are not "necessary" to play the game. You buy the base pack and you're good to go. Then every pack you buy afterwards is a lottery. The only difference is that, yes, MtG cards influence play, while Valve's lootboxes tend to focus on cosmetics.

But I do agree with you somewhat. If you're a truly excellent, experienced developer, then you might be able to use genAI in a non-slop way - keep the generated code to snippets and run extensive unit/UI tests on the outputs, etc. But if you're that experienced, you probably rarely need to lean on genAI in the first place.
And running all those unit/UI tests for the generated code will probably mean that, overall, you haven't saved any time anyway. Which is what they found in this study a year ago.

Maybe (probably even) genAI code is much better than it was a year ago? But still, ethically bereft nonetheless.

Quoting: federico_cbaHere's a counterpoint that I found to be a really interesting read:Quoting: scaine"I'm doing a thing people hate, so instead of not doing that, I'll continue to do it, but hide it better"You can use in a non-slop way, carefully reviewing the generated code and making adjustments and refactors. Something that he can do as an experienced developer. It would be different if he was blindly accepting the AI generated code.
That's a bold position to take in any project, let alone a FOSS project. And just because he can use it in non-slop manner (maybe? hopefully?) it doesn't absolve him of the ethical concerns many of us have about genAI.

I suppose if you only do native gaming, perhaps only buying on GOG and Itch, and so you don't benefit at all from Proton, and don't care about, or for, Valve as a company, that's a valid stance. Even then, you're overlooking the effects of groundswell they've created for Linux by shipping the Steam Deck and promising a Steam Machine, or pushing SteamOS. That groundswell is a big part of why indies still push out Linux builds, from which you benefit.
But I guess if you can overlook all that, AND you don't use Steam ever, then you won't care if Valve are forced to put ID verification in Steam?
But that's a lot of overlooking. And hardly a lol moment.

Quoting: Linux_RocksStill not about to weep for Valve if they lose. lolThis is such a strange attitude to bring to a Linux forum. I don't get it.

Pure greed. Plain and simple. Just a bunch of copyright trolls.
Why be paid for our music once when we can bully storefronts to be paid for the exact same effort multiple times!?
I hope Valve decimate them in this case. Sincerely.

It's Capcom, so, Denuvo encumbered, which is a shame, as this is another title I'd definitely buy otherwise.

Only played a couple of hours of the first one - I remember enjoying it, but (as usual) was distracted by other games of the time. In this case, from my Steam "last played", it was Rise of the Tomb Raider! Or it could have been MidBoss, Welcome to Basingstoke, or possibly... indeed likely... Gunpoint.
Goddam, in fact, straight after Gunpoint, there was Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, and then one of my favourite games of all time - Transistor. No wonder I never went back to this!
Anyway, it's an easy wishlist.

I appreciate that I'm in a minority here, but DRM has never been about performance for me. It's been about respecting your customers and not treating them like criminals. It's about giving your customers a better experience than the pirates. It's about acknowledging that even when DRM works... the pirates wouldn't be buying your game anyway. It's not a lost sale. Or at least not meaningful lost sales. Certainly not lost sales to the tune of a one-off £250K fee, and £25K a month.
So this is a maybe for me now. I've ignored all the RE games of late, because they've been encumbered. Might have to bring myself up to date and play catch up.
