Quoting: scaineHard to get excited about this when not only is our O/S not supported, but the features are largely locked to the underwhelming 9000 series of cards.

It promises a nice direction of travel, but there's just nothing really tangible yet.
While I do agree with you on the first part, I don't find the 9000 series to be underwhelming at all. On the contrary I have been very happy with the performance of my 9070 XT which I picked up for a decent price on Black Week. It was a good jump in performance compared to my 5 year old RX 6800 and has been working great under CachyOS.

But I guess it largely depends on you expectations and what you compare them to.
Good point! It's underwhelming (for me) because I have a 7900xtx, so not much a performance jump.

Monster Hunter Wilds is set for some big performance upgrades

I've got the first Monster Hunter (Worlds?) which was fun, and was looking forward to Wilds, but you know how I feel about Denuvo. No interest. I think there's a third one too, right? Rise?

If they keep sticking that shitty anti-consumer BS on their games, I'll keep not buying them.

Aspyr have indefinitely delayed Deus Ex Remastered

I've just started a Deus Ex run last week! But then, I also started a Thief Gold run... and now I can't decide which to play when I'm in the mood for some retro gameplay!

Talking point - what have you been playing lately?

I had some time off a couple of weeks ago, and pulled the trigger on Avowed. Absolutely stunning game - like a cross between Skyrim's open world and interesting characters, and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic's visceral combat. The dodge, block, attack almost feels souls-like at times, and some of the fights are just absolutely immense. Incredibly fun game.

Otherwise, just Path of Exile 2 as usual, but the Abyssal League finished a few days ago, and the new Last Druid expansion launches tonight, with a new league kicking off. Can't wait. PoE2 is incredible, I love it.

Anti-cheat will still be one of the biggest problems for the new Steam Machine

Quoting: LoudTechie
Quoting: LestibournesI wonder, since Valve is now the OS vendor, if it can't implement its own kernel-level anticheat and let the game devs or anticheat devs make use of it.
It could, but the devs wouldn't trust it, because under the gpl they would be forced to release the source code defeating the security through obscurity kernel anti-cheat relies on.
That might be a strength in the long-run though, because if you're relying on security through obscurity, we all know how that ends. But if you implemented an open-source anti-cheat tool that was actually robust? That would be a huge win.

Hytale will run on Linux PCs via Flatpak but Steam Deck will require more work

no appimage?
i guess someone can extract the client from it and build an actual package

nice to see linux support though
I love how ridiculously divisive we all are as Linux users.

Dare I ask... why the hate for flatpak (a puke emoji, no less!)? If I can't install something directly, I want a flatpak. I'll use an AppImage and resent it, because it (often) doesn't create a menu item, it requires me to find a place for it to live (I usually bung them in ~/Misc/Apps or something), and doesn't update with the rest of my system. I won't use snap, as I'm not interested in YAI (yet another installer) when I already have flatpak.
A fix for your appimage problem is appimage-launcher [External Link].
Thanks! But another fix is to avoid AppImages, haha!

I think we have a slight problem with a packaging format that needs an external app to manage the packaging format. I suppose the same could be said of Flatpak needing flatseal, but now that Plasma has integrated that into the Plasma settings, I'm definitely a flatpak guy these days. Not for Steam... but definitely for everything else that I can't install easily with my existing package management tool!

War Thunder is getting infantry combat

Call of Thunder! CodThunder! Battlethunder!

If they get this right, I suspect it will swell the War Thunder numbers significantly!! We'll end up with videos like that @GnarSasquatch guy on Arma Reforger!

Framework greatly expand their open source event and Linux distribution sponsorships
9 Dec 2025 at 1:42 pm UTC Likes: 5

It's hard to be upset at the Hyprland donations, I suppose, in the face of the all the good they're additionally doling out on a monthly basis. Still wish they'd drop Gnome for KDE though (and by extension, also drop Hyprland), as this feels like the direction of travel these days.

I might just be blinkered there though. I suspect Gnome still has a huge mindshare, probably as a combined result over decades of Ubuntu and Fedora.

Edit: Just read this forum post and no, I don't think it's hard to be upset about the Hyprland and Omarchy sponsorships at all now. JFC, Framework. WTF. Stop.
