Quoting: LosButchAnyone have experience with multiplayer cross platform? Curious about this game, so how hard is it to host a game with a windows, mac and linix mix?I run a dedicated server for my clan and it's been great. The server runs on Linux but I'm the only one out of 7 people that plays on it using Linux.

Also, I really like the art style. Much better than the hyper realistic approach which ends up looking dated after a few years.
7 days to die is a very ugly game with some newer assets thrown in and performs even worse.
This game is leagues more polished and performant than 7 Days to Die, which what, has been in development since 2014? I mean it when I say the state of this game right now puts a lot of other released games (and some EA ones) to shame and 7 Days is on that list.
Try OpenGL if your vulkan performance isn't that great. I can't tell what GPU you have but on AMD currently OpenGL is better.

Quoting: Dmitri SeletskiI have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHY.It sounds like you don't have any friends that play then? I've got 7 on my server and it's been a blast together. Playing with random people doesn't sound fun to me.
Crap graphics(low polly). Clear alpha quality. Performance is utter crap.(playable, with low polly where you see individual squares on items it is playable, but on my decent rig i get around 60 fps and no, i get more sometimes, so no vsync)
Single player is marginally worse than multiplayer. And multiplayer is plain boring.

Quoting: Dmitri SeletskiNo character progression not counting crafting techniques.LOL, there is player progression. Your skills. They go down by 25% if you die.
Killed first two bosses so far, monster are bland and non exciting. Typical damage sponges. Battle is decent, but absolutely NOTHING to write home about.
Some events happen. Once a few in game days monsters will attack you in your fort. 4-5 monsters will come. Which if you are smart you will disp
Do yourself a favour and buy 7 days to die.

66.5 hours of nothing but valheim. Valheim > sleep.
Valheim managed to sell over 1 million copies in the first week

Quoting: x_wingI've read that at 1440P the performance really starts to tank. Vulkan's frame times are all over the place. It does not feel smooth all of the time. I'll be running at 70+ FPS one second and then sub 50 the next. Even with freesync the stutter is noticeable under Vulkan. OpenGL, while not perfect, at least doesn't suffer the same inconsistent/stuttery performance.

While the game does bring some new mechanics into the genre I don't think that's what is selling this game.
This game is selling well because of how well all of those mechanics work together, there's no other game quite like it. The level of polish and thoughtfulness put into this game continues to astound me. It's the little touches here and there that really make this game stand out in the over-saturated (and often universally bad) early access survival crafting genre.
The amount of content already in the game for $20 is outright insane. I'd pay much more for this game. As of right now I'm at ~45 hours and in the Iron Age and I'm still noticing new things. This game reminds me of runescape, fable, and minecraft all in one.
I've now got 7 people on my server and it's been a blast to play as the difficulty scales to the number of players. This game is more challenging than other games in the genre but not as punishing (game won't kill you if you don't eat, repairs don't take resources, etc). There's something to be said about having to haul loads of scrap iron by ship across a sea-serpent infested ocean (if you start on an island without a swamp). While this may be considered "grindy" by some I think the constant danger and relative scarcity of resources (especially ores) makes the payoff of building the next upgrade or forging the next piece of armor that much more rewarding.
My clan has been sharing resources (as to not have one person in full iron while there are others in leather) so hoarding isn't much of a concern but I LOVE the fact that you can build personal chests and even setup private residences (there's an item you can build that prevents others from opening your doors).
---------------
Your character and their inventory transfer across servers. When the game releases and all of the biomes/bosses are introduced all you'd have to do is create a new world and login with your prexisting character.
---------------
graphics tip: Turn off depth of field, motion blur, and chromatic aberration (and possible head shake!) for a much sharper looking game. This game is gorgeous, now only if it performed better with Vulkan on AMD...

System76 tease shots of their custom Keyboard and release the source code
11 Feb 2021 at 3:02 pm UTC
I have issues typing on standard keyboards comfortably due to American football injuries to both hands. This led me to prefer chiclet keyboards over mechanical due to the low actuation force. It wasn't until I forced myself to learn to type properly that ergonomic keyboards started to "click" for me. I've now got the logitech Ergo K860 [External Link] and I love it. If this keyboard had back-lighting and the build quality of the MX keys it would be perfect in my eyes.
The open source firmware and the fact that system76 makes this keyboard makes me want it but I'm afraid it would be physically painful for me to use. Hopefully there is an ample return window as I'd really like to try it.

Quoting: minkiuHow do you like these keyboards? Did it take long to get used to them? I attempted to use one before I knew how to type properly and it was a mind bender.

Valheim has become the next survival game hit on Steam

I rather enjoy the progress gating this game has. It guides you towards the next goal which often requires serious resources and/or equipment. You're only limited by your creativity and the game is very much a learn-by-doing experience.
It's almost like Minecraft in this regard (getting to the ender dragon requires portal resources, etc). Experiencing this game through streams is not truly experiencing it.
---
I've personally gotten 3 people to pick up the game. It's a blast with more people. The only concern of mine is what happens when the game releases? I'd imagine I'd need to restart the game for my world to include the new bosses/biomes.

Quoting: iskaputtThis is the polar opposite of what I've experienced and/or heard from those playing the game. It's easily the most polished early access game I've ever seen in my life. This E.A. release puts most game's regular releases to shame.
Quoting: DMGRafts are slow, yes, but have you tried the longboats?

So far this game seems to perform better for me using OpenGL, a sentiment I've seen echoed in comments here as well. Framerates under vulkan will tank one second (when it was just running at 60+) and then all of a sudden recover. I've yet to have OpenGL exhibit the same behavior.
If you have a spare computer or server (vps, aws, etc.) somewhere it's pretty easy to set up a server for this game. Requires a bit of port forwarding (2456-2458 UDP). Here's the systemd unit I'm using for my server, now modified to properly save the server state thanks to beko.

I've so far played 11 hours of this game and I haven't ventured out of the starting area yet. As I've got a group of people interested in playing I've set up a dedicated server so that it's not dependent on whoever happens to be online. The next step is putting the dedicated server into a container using this [External Link] as the base image. Steamcmd is 32bit and thus requires 32bit libs to be installed on the host.
If anyone is curious, here's the systemd service unit I'm using for my server as of right now.The systemd unit doesn't take updating the game server into account yet but that could be added with a call to steamcmd in an 'ExecStartPre' directive.

- Setup a user 'steam' with the home /home/steam to run steamcmd

Using the Epic Store on Linux is even easier with the latest Heroic Games Launcher updates

This is what I had to do to get the copy of star wars battlefront II from EPIC working. The game requires both the Epic games launcher as well as Origin. Attempting to launch the game from either launcher does nothing but setting lutris to open the game executable directly works. Origin launches...then epic...and then the game. It's messy, but it works.
