Valve confirms their continued support for Linux gaming

Here are the links to the two relevant stories on SN:
Valve Removed the Steam Machine Section from Steam [External Link] (which links back to the original GoL story.)
Valve Clears the Air on its Removal of the Steam Machine Section From its Store [External Link] (which links back to the Steam Forum post.)
Soylent News is not a linux specific website, but a geek news website. It does have a few linux detractors but they are mostly ignored/modded down and the community as a whole has a respect for linux.

Quoting: liamdaweCan't really go on any Linux-related site, especially a gaming one, without something like it coming up. Just take it with a pinch of salt and gloss over the comments you don't really care about :)That is why I like Soylent News [External Link] (which I previously mentioned.) It is a news aggregator for geeks. It is modeled after the Slashdot.org website of old. In fact many people there (including myself) used to frequent slashdot back in the day. However, many left after the much hated design changes, commercial takeover, and burying of stories. (Personally, I left slashdot after the Sourceforge controversy [External Link].)

With over 90% of steam users on Windows they will never annoy their users with a Linux only release, even if it was just a few days until a windows port. The best we can hope for is the linux version same day as windows. Honestly, Valve will probably strive for this because it is in their best interests. In order to prove that linux is a viable platform, a full featured and supported release cross platforms shows that linux compatibility is a realistic goal. (as the saying goes... eating their own dog food.)
Regardless on your beliefs of DRM, Valve has done a lot for linux gaming. IMO, significantly more than just the minimum to keep us alive as the anti Microsoft nuke option.

Quoting: MohandevirPersonnaly, what I would like to see is Valve producing their games on Linux first, and then porting them to other platforms. I'm pretty sure that we would see a slew of fans installing SteamOS/Linux just for the sake of being the firsts to play the game, be it for a "beta" or not. This will never happen. Valve is after all a company looking for profit. Linux is their strategy if Microsoft ever goes nuclear with the UWP/proprietary store options.

Quoting: liamdaweOk, not so shocked now... Linux Haters used it as a basis to hate more.Quoting: stretch611Edit: I am a little shocked about the needed clarification... The original article never said they were dropping linux support, or even alluding to that fact. I thought it was quite clear that only hardware was being dropped. The issue is how other sites reported it. I saw one such site say it was the "final nail in the coffin" and other such things.

Ars picked up that story from here? Wow, call me shocked. Ars pretty much ignores linux... except for a few small server related articles once every six months or so. (but damn, Ars loves their shiny macs.) I've seem game reviews of titles that have a native linux version but they never mention linux anywhere. But again... they never fail to mention mac when appropriate.
But I am also shocked that Soylent News [External Link] picked up the article... it means I'm not the only one that reads both that site and this one. :)

Just a note... a major announcement from their website... Factorio will be having a price increase [External Link]... from $20(US) to $30(US) on April 16th. Please note that they do not give discounts either... I would advise you people that never buy Early Access to reconsider, unless you want to pay more.

As for stability... I have been playing the unstable branch since the middle of December when it was released. It has never crashed on me or had any major game-affecting bugs except for one day. On release had a bad binary on linux through steam; they realized it and fixed it within hours. The only other bug I had was one side of a transport belt was stopped and blocked the flow. It was a rare one, but I grabbed the first piece off the belt and it worked normally... the bug was fixed the next release. Even their unstable releases are quite stable and better than most finished games.
The new 0.16 features... The graphics truly make a nice and significant difference. The cliffs act like walls and give the illusion of 3D, but make no other difference past cosmetics. You can change the cliff settings from none to everywhere in the map generation config. You can remove cliffs in your game with explosives. Concrete graphics were updated, as well as a new iteration of "refined concrete." The new artillery is quite a game changer, but only comes into play during late game... it is not available before then. It is quite helpful to keep the area near your walls clear of biter nests. (It also has range benefits from infinite research.)
Overall, the new release is quite an improvement and it is a great game.

Quoting: scaineRegarding the spidertron, I don't know the details, but of course the 3D "version" of this game, "Fortresscraft Evolved" has had a spidertron sentry robot thing for quite a while. I wonder how much these two titles play off each other?I have both games, Factorio, and FortressCraft Evolved... Other than the overall premise of creating a factory to build a ship and escape the planet the games are really not similar at all. (I know that sounds pretty exact... but the games are quite different.) From what I see, FCE has more in common with MineCraft than it does with Factorio. FCE has pixelated cube graphics in a 3D world. Factorio has 3d isometric graphics in essentially what is a 2D world. FWIW... I have over 1200 hours in Factorio... less than 10 in FCE.

I have been on the fence about this one... I was afraid to spend $40(US) for a MMO only to find it too grindy.
While the previous comments did not mention grind, the amount of negativity here does push me on to the "don't bother" side of things. (Its not that they are extreme at all, but the number of people disliking the game for various reasons is a big turn off to the game.)

For those that never played... Deekin is a NPC... a kobold Bard. He has the best lines in the game if you let him join your party.
