Spooky Range - A new Unity3D FPS for Halloween
30 Oct 2013 at 5:06 pm UTC

Played a bit of it this morning just to get a taste of the game; the basic premise is that you need to shoot at targets from an enclosed area in order to complete level objectives and earn cash, hence the origin of the title as it is basically placing you in a themed firing range. There are only three areas currently, namely the Graveyard, Castle, and Cave, each with four distinct parts featuring different level objectives and earning opportunities. The developers do pledge to offer further support to the title however, and state that they wish to add additional levels and features to the game.

It also ran well enough, although there was an odd bug wherein if I switched to the pistol from from the default weapon, what appeared to be tennis balls, the firing animation on the pistol would show and repeat until I actually fired a shot. I also could not download the game from Desurium, as it claimed that there were no releases. I was however able to download the standalone download; being a Unity3D game it was just a simple matter of extracting the Linux directory and launching the binary, as we have all come to expect from the engine. There is another concern I have with the game, but I for the present will not reveal that here as I need to look into it further before commenting on it.

Indeed, it does bother me when we get only one game in a series. I appreciate Fargo and company putting in the effort to bring us the full cannon.

I did not have all of the effects turned on when I was playing due to the performance penalty; whether or not the driver itself can support all of the effects the game offers I do not know, but I was fairly pleased with what I did get considering the hardware being used.

So was the data actually Copyleft before? If not, only the freeware community has lost by this.

But I echo DrMcCoy here in that his choice of licenses is odd and potentially harmful as he would need to hold up the terms of that license himself and could not enlist the the help of the Free Software Foundation.

As I mentioned in the review, you can trade points between characters, so you could have temporarily acquired the plank by sacrificing a different skill from any of the characters. Although, I have no notion of any level that requires you to use the plank; as I said, puzzles were designed not to rely on any one character, so there probably was another way to handle it all the same.

7 Days To Die Taken Down From Steam

This reminds me of the counterfeit Lugaru sold on the iPhone app store - the blame for that really lied on Apple in my opinion, considering that they do vet all content they sell, but not for the benefit of the actual rights holder, apparently. Especially since in that instance Apple dragged its heals when it came to removing the illegitimate version from the store.

This is not the first time I have seen copyrighted assets in resource packs or other such entities. A lot of people simply do not understand how copyright works, although in my opinion the blame really should be on Unity as the developers in this instance thought they were operating in good faith.

Quoting: Quote from Mike FrettAs far as the next Source engine, we don't even really know what features it will offer or how well it works. It's too early to talk about. If it spits out games like Serious Sam 3, then it's not going to go very well for that either. That game is a mess of headache inducing, over-bloomed rubbish.
That game is not built on Source, but rather Croteam's own Serious Engine.

Quoting: Quote from HadBabitsAs for steam, I've hardly seen a Linux title on it that wasn't available somewhere else as well, so I'm not too worried.
I would not go that far because there are quite a few, but I have been impressed with the amount of diversity that has remained even after the introduction of Steam. Both Desura and Humble Store have proven to be viable alternatives, more so than I would have expected. In fact, at this point Humble Store fights the good fight for DRM free games far more than Humble Bundle does, strangely enough.

Penumbra Collection Now On Desura

Well, I finally got a response from Frictional support; it turns out the problem was that my copy of the game shipped with bad shaders. After replacing them with new shaders they provided the game worked like a treat, although I am left wondering why it took almost a week and a half to get any response out of them. I know it is not their main focus anymore, but you think that after releasing a game on a new distribution platform you would take a bit more of an interest in it again.

At any rate, they did solve my problem, although I am left wondering if this was truly my problem or something that could affect more Desura users. I did download two versions, one from the  Desura client and independently through the Desura web store, both had issues, so there might be something more going on.

It has been getting better with incrementally over time, but it would be nice to see things get kicked into high gear. Hopefully this money will do that.
