DRM Boosts Profits & It's Here To Stay

Quoting: IvancilloI know that many people like Steam, but I would be happy if publishers didn't have that "possibility" (meaning G.E.M.).
Well yes, which is why I do not use Steam, but it is still important to make the distinction. Not all the features that Steam provides are DRM, or are dependant on it.

DRM Boosts Profits & It's Here To Stay

Quoting: biffI don't mind some forms of DRM, like steam. If it was a choice between steam as it is and downloading each title from the publishers with no DRM, I would take the former, just for the convenience of having all my titles in one place.
It is important to remember that Steam itself is not DRM and a lot of the features people like from it do not necessarily need to tie the game itself to Steam. Steamworks is the component which ties a game to Steam, not the Steam client software itself, and even most of Steamworks could be kept separate from the binary in a perfect world.

I must admit I too have gotten lazy and unwilling to buy a game that is not on some storefront that can manage my purchases - meaning that I only buy games on Humble, Desura, and soon GoG. That does not necessarily mean I need to embrace DRM for that convenience, however.

It also appears on Desura, although it is missing a Linux icon despite otherwise advertising Linux support:

AMD's Mantle May Still Come To Linux, Despite Other Websites Reports

Quoting: SilviuOf course you can twist this again and make it about Linux, but the thing is that while most of the time I do use Linux, I have no issues running Windows when I really need it. I have a feeling you would not do that.
The difference is neither I or mirv are making inflammatory posts about Windows users, not that I can speak for his platform choices.

Quoting: Silviuas long as it makes you feel good about your choice and the money you spent
I have actually spent very little money on graphics cards; my current one I got used for $40 dollars over three years ago. It is still the best graphics card I have ever had the pleasure of using, so I definitely have no regrets in purchasing it.

AMD's Mantle May Still Come To Linux, Despite Other Websites Reports

Quoting: SilviuGeez, I don't know... performance?. We're talking about gaming here.

Of course I expect the "it works just fine for me" band wagon to arrive. I mean, somehow you need to justify spending money on AMD's crap and still feel good about it.

See how that sounds for you. It is the crux of your own argument.

I only use FOSS drivers for many good and valid reasons, including for all of the gaming that I currently do. I appreciate the fact that I can use my AMD cards the way I want to, which is something I can not currently say for Nvidia.

What The Hell Happened To The GamingOnLinux Design?

Switched back to the light theme myself, as I feel it has better contrast. Thank you very much for keeping it as an option and good luck with the new design.

Are More AAA Games Waiting For Steam Machines?
7 Apr 2014 at 3:44 pm UTC

Quoting: ImantsWe do not have anything else to put our trust into. So if Valve fails our dreams fails with it :)
The great thing about the recent Linux gaming boom is that it is not actually being driven by only one developer or vendor this time - this is not like the first Linux gaming boom of the late 1990's and early 2000's that was entirely dependant on the success of Loki Software.

Valve are a major player in the Linux gaming scene sure, but they are hardly the only people involved in this, and things were heating up long before the Linux Steam release. To say that if Valve falls we fall to is actually rather churlish.

System Shock 2 FPS Now Available On Linux
4 Apr 2014 at 3:32 pm UTC

Quoting: neffoHowever, my point was that Wine does a really, really good job and porting the game is pointless. (I don't know of a game of that vintage that doesn't work - but I don't tend to replay old games.)
Pointless to you as you do not replay old games, but not pointless for those of us who do.

Further, I have quite a few old games which either flat out don't work (Dark Forces II for instance) or have some critical features missing (such as basically any game that relies on DirectPlay).

As I said though, I do grant that the effort of porting them may not be justified for the developer, but if that is the case then they really should release the source code for the games anyway, as they have just demonstrated themselves that they no longer have any proper business case for keeping the games closed.

River Town, A Farming Role Play Game with A Heartwarming Story
3 Apr 2014 at 3:38 pm UTC

Ah, another game promoting the mass media Holstein hegemony...

Sorry, but I always look through these things with an aim to laugh, so do not take it personally. I guess it is because of all the "existential freedom" I am enjoying out here.

I do appreciate the fact that they say your animals will die if you ignore them though.

Finally, some realism...
