20 years later the open source Colonization game FreeCol hits 1.0

Just out of interest, has FreeCiv been updated in the last 10 years.. the last 20 years?

Is FreeCiv seen as complete?
Just thought there were a few rough edges last time I played it.

Not that I don’t appreciate the work on FreeCol. :)

We may get a Steam Controller 2, plus fun updates coming to Steam Deck

Quoting: NanobangIt broke my heart when word came down that there would be no new Steam Controllers, and since then, gaming sessions feel a little ... bittersweet, like getting coffee with a dying friend. But news that there's talk of a Steam Controller 2? That's like getting news that there's a chance I'll get a new, better friend---maybe even before my dying friend ... dies?

Yeah, that sounds wrong. So, Steam Controller v 2.0? Awesome! Replacing dying friends? Not so awesome.
So a new controller will mean that I can say that the Steam controller is awesome and not get the response, “Then why has it been discontinued?”

Much in the same way that they would say it was a failure, so they are not going to try it for themselves. Can’t wait to see what they do for Steam Controller 2.

My childhood gaming experiences were spent with a Commodore 64 joystick in my hand, and the closest I come to that in modern pc gaming was using the Steam Controller.

“Improved support for third-party PS3/PS4/PS5 controllers”

Hoping this means better support for my Astro C40. Generally it works well in Steam on Linux, but do get some inconsistencies.
If Steam allowed me to lock this into Playstation mode rather then switching to treating it like an XBox controller it would be great.

FIFA? Nah, give me more of Pixel Cup Soccer

Nah, no need for any EA game replacements.

If I play any football game on PC then I go Retro all the time. No need to remember 8 different button combinations.

Quoting: MasterSleortThis is such a great game! I can only recommend with the visuals, great soundtrack and fun driving.

My only gripe, which may seem contradictory to me recommending the game, is the controls. It sometimes feels very binary, where even the slightest adjustment to direction, causes the wheels to feel like they turn completely. Its hard to describe, but following long curved roads can be quiet hard compared to other games. Unfortunately, the developers do not seem interested in fixing it [External Link]. But once you get over that and learn that you must drive like with a keyboard, it is very fun!
They do have driver assist options available now in settings. Do not know which update.

You can choose a number with the higher numbers taking a lot of the sensitivity out of it. Choose your own arcade experience. Play the game on PlayStation and I think it defaults to driver assist on max settings. I had to dial it down a bit, because the physics felt wrong on maximum.

Have a look in settings. There somewhere. Might be separate settings for steering and break assist.

Valve give update on official Steam Deck Dock, Valve excited for SteamOS on more devices

Encouraging for the future of SteamDeck, and Linux gaming in general

“Honestly, the reaction from Japanese publishers and developers has been immensely, immensely positive. They are so excited about it, and we've been hearing that from them from the beginning because we were sending them units. These are the same publishers and developers that are making sure that their games run great on Deck, and you can see many of those teams here today at TGS.”

“.. Every month, we just say, "Hey, here are the top games on Steam Deck," and there's always a really healthy number of them that are coming from those Japanese developers. Elden Ring or Final Fantasy or Monster Hunter are always on the list.”

And this is only the first generation of the SteamDeck. Developers are actually making the effort to ensure their games are compatible. And if we get an influx of Japanese games on Steam.. Looking forward to the next few years.

DOSBox Staging 0.79.0 is out now

Is there any way that Wine 32 bit might compete against DosBox some day?

Wine has no problems with the speed side of things while DosBox can sometimes struggle here.

If you stripped all the DirectX stuff out of Wine and created a version more focused on late Dos / Early windows (say 3.1 - 98)

Future goals.. Support for VR??
Hardly mission critical for a Dos emulator..

Am I missing something? VR is in the suggested features list, not the planned ones. Besides, emulating old dos-connected vr devices on modern ones would certainly be suitable for a gaming-centered dos emulator.
Ok,

But if you hope to have DosBox running on all platforms, then it would just be mean spirited to rule out Occulus.

Quoting: Craggles086So the official DOSBox is version 0.74-3, and this Staging is version 0.79.

No one thinks we might be ready for a version 1 yet, after how many years of DOSBox?
Just to be clear, despite the name, this is a separate fork and project from the original DosBox:
https://dosbox-staging.github.io/about/ [External Link]

(Yes, it's a confusing name considering the Wine and Wine-staging relationship which is quite different.)

Both projects might reach 1.0 at some point, but they have different developers and different goals.
What goals do the guys behind DOSBox staging have besides continuing / improving development?

Ok, so I approve of some goals..

- Improve the out-of-the-box experience for new users.

Not sure I approve of all the goals..

- [we are Not] Being the fastest DOS emulator on x86 hardware. Linux users interested in emulation speed should look at dosemu2.

Pinball Dreams had some brilliant sound effects on the old PC hardware, which the current DosBox struggles to reproduce because it runs too slow. I gather DosBox staging will not be improving things here, despite its emphasis on games.
