Cities: Skylines turns four years old, has some impressive stats

Skylines is a great sandbox modern city builder worthy of about 200 hours with DLCs, but that's about it. I think it is time for cities in motion 3 combining the great gameplay of the first cities in motion game with the graphics of cities skylines and some new improvements as well. Maybe with an export option from skylines so you get more cities to play with, although great prebuilt cities matching Berlin, London, Helsinki, etc, is a must.

GOG are ending their 'Fair Price Package program', soon after letting staff go

I use gog mainly for older games, and especially during sales, the old games are so cheap that regional pricing doesn't matter. Anno 1602 in wine is still fun, and I am having a look at anno 1701 as well. I don't expect to buy any new games from gog though, although anno 1701 kind of does feel like a new game even though it was released in 2006.

What have you been playing recently and what do you think of it?

Quoting: Jack_BlackI have started playing The Walking Dead: Road to Survival again. It is an Android-App, that I am running with Genymotion and a few adjustments. Great game, high potential for addiction. Cool that Android-Emulation on Linux is possible, too.
So, you are running an android app through Genymotion, a windows app that you are running on WINE?!?
Genymotion is using virtualbox and runs on Windows, Linux, mac. As long as you are not using it for anything work related you can use it with a restrictive personal license without paying. Not every game/app works too well though, and you get sample ads rather than real ones.

The Linux version of 'The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep' to be released with the Director's Cut

The issue we have as developers is that we are unable to finalize the Mac and Linux versions of the game and continue to simultaneously make such sweeping changes to it.
You'd think inXile would know to make their code cross-platform from the get-go by now. This ain't the first title they release on Linux.
Wasteland 2 and Torment were unity, this is their first UE4 game supporting linux. Maybe it was easier to export those two games to linux, or maybe the developers who were the most familiar with linux on their team transitioned to wasteland 3 instead of bards tale IV development. I hope this is a one time mistake, and won't become a habit, but we will see.

Looks like Easy Anti-Cheat strikes again with Steam Play, Paladins is no longer playable on Linux

Quoting: EhvisThe best fix would be if these systems would not be necessary at all. Unfortunately a small percentage manage to ruin that for everyone. Which leaves the second best option, have the anti-cheat code be aware of Wine and accept it. I think many actually are. It certainly looks like EAC can accept Wine just fine because most EAC protected games have had stretches where it worked. Which makes me think it is considered a "weaker" setting which is then changed at some point leaving non-functional on wine.
I would much rather have a few opponents cheat than run anti cheat software that spy on me.

Quoting: GuestGames are NOT art. At best, the contain some art, alongside other things. For example music in games is art. But games per se, are NOT art.

This is just a bullshit excuse we tell ourselves just so we can justify the time we waste playing them. We want to feel like we are experiencing art while all we are doing is playing with virtual toys.

Video games are just entertainment, and there is nothing wrong with that. Stop deluding yourselves.
But all the arts are made for entertainment, or you don't consider films an art?
No. You got it all wrong, as did the previous posters.

Art is NOT about entertainment. Art is about expression, and the transfer of ideas and feelings.

Thus, not every film is art... For example porn is not "art". Porn is just there so you can get an easy and fast release of sexual pleasure. There is no artistic expression, no feelings or thoughts transfered. Just raw porn.

A great philosophical theatrical play is Art. A clown making balloons on the street for little kids, not art. One is there to transfer thoughts and feelings, the other is there just to waste some time and entertain the brats while their parents can drink their coffee with their friends in peace. LOL.
A lot of games qualify for that definition of art. A simple minesweeper clone doesn't qualify, but games like Psychonauts definitely do.

Quoting: morbiusHonestly, I might as well go back to piracy.
Double standards?
Nope. What I liked I would always buy afterwards. Depending on how much I liked it, I might even buy it on smaller discount, get special editions, DLCs, etc. And I would make sure to promote good games as well.

But cheaper games meant I would risk getting more stuff, although I might end up not liking it. That meant I would get to try out more things, while industry gets more of my money overall, seems like a sweet deal for everyone. But now I see games that are over three years old cost 10+ euros on a Steam's biggest sale. Who does that benefit exactly? Whoever really wanted that game has bought it already, you're not generating any new sales with that strategy. Withholding art from people is wrong, developers should care to get their money, but also that their art is available to audiences.

I disagree, video games are art as long as the components of the game are combined with the purpose of realizing a vision. Disqualifying all games from being art, will in my opinion also disqualify a lot of films, and a lot of music from being art.

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2018, an end of year review

Two point hospital is definitely the best game of 2018, followed by rise of the tomb raider.
