FunKey S is a tiny Linux-powered retro-gaming handheld

Seems like a decent Gameboy emulator, but even in the promotional video you can see that the PS1 emulation is stretched vertically, as dropping it to native aspect ratio would make the fast racing game meant to be played on a 26"+ TV smaller than a matchbox. I'd rather pay more to have a bit wider screen to accommodate at least 4:3 with a decent screen size (and just add black bars on the sides when emulating anything in near 1:1 aspect ratio). The screen is about the same size as the ones in early 2000s cellphones and these never got the reputation of being comfortable gaming machines.

Another problem is the size of the whole thing. I understand that's the point, but it's just too tiny for me. Using it on the go implies things like commuting, but I can see myself struggling with these tiny buttons and a single road bump making me lose focus on the screen as it's so tiny. Then there's no audio jack, so the whole bus can enjoy PLINK PLINK WAHOO with me.

Urban turn-based tactics arrives on Linux with Black Powder Red Earth

While I appreciate a civilised discourse, an increasingly rare thing these days, I have to agree with the comment above with keeping politics off-limits due to the gaming-oriented nature of the site.

I wanted to say that I appreciate the original setting and it reminded me of the Jagged Alliance series. We need more turn-based squad-based tacticool modern combat in a somewhat morally ambiguous third-world setting. Unfortunately, Phantom Doctrine didn't scratch that itch and the only game that got even remotely close was Silent Storm, which I played probably a decade ago.

If you think you were done with RimWorld think again - the 1.1 update is in Beta

Quests tab is a major plus, I'm still playing unmodded and a few times I've failed a quest because I simply forgot about it.

Pioneer, the classic open-source space sim has a big new release out

Quoting: Patolaunevolved from the latest 20 years.
I think that's the problem with the Elite formula in general and E: D, at least how it was on release, is a prime example of that. For all its flash there was little substance compared to, let's say, the X series (if I remember correctly, the last game even had Space Legs!). Elite:Frontier blew me away as a kid, but it's far less impressive now that I understand better how the magic of fitting a galaxy on floppy disks works.

Reading their wiki gave me the Freelancer itch. I need to play that again.

Nightdive Studios have released some extended System Shock footage

Quoting: EikeSystem Shock is, like Half-Life 1 & 2, an important game I've missed back then. I still wonder if I should visit them in their enhanced versions. I'm somewhat allergic to outdated 3D graphics.
While Black Mesa is not the 100% purist approved original Half Life 1 experience, it's the closest thing and 1.0 is supposedly around the corner.

Half-Life 2 aged really well IMO and its environmental lighting its still impressive even if the textures are a bit blurry. There's a bunch of upscale mods for that.
Spoiler, click me
There's also the Cinematic Mod, but we're entering cursed territory and I will speak no further of evil.

The gameplay is still very solid, but unfortunately, none of these will replicate the jaw drop of me and my cousins booting up HL2 circa 2004-2005 and then spending 30 minutes at the starting train station just throwing mundane objects around and drooling at graphics. Then the second thing you've really missed out is the few years after each release which saw a plethora of some great multiplayer mods, most of which are dead now, though Neotokyo and Zombie Panic Source still have people playing and the latter got updated recently.

Frictional Games (SOMA, Amnesia) begin teasing something new

Looks like a loop of asteroid photos taken by a probe. SOMA had mankind go extinct due to an impact event.

Coincidence? I think not. :O

Their games usually get sequels and SOMA was well received, so I assume it will be something related.

Did anyone say real-time Worms?

The big Steam Autumn Sale is now live, time to nominate for the Steam Awards
27 Nov 2019 at 9:23 am UTC

While I already own a steam controller, I do hate it when sales like that (more like giveaways amirite) happen overnight and all the stock is gone after I wake up. At least I managed to snatch a Steam Link when they were selling it for next to nothing a while ago and I presume that the only reason why I got it was because there wasn't enough interest to outright clear the stock.

I can see some good deals, but to be honest the Winter/Christmas sale is in less than a month and there might be even better deals.

BATTLETECH Heavy Metal has firmly stomped its way to release
22 Nov 2019 at 8:56 am UTC

Heavy Metal is truly an expansion aimed at the big fans of BATTLEMECH. To appreciate it, you need to really understand the core gameplay experience it offers. While BATTLEMECH is good, it's still quite a daunting game to get into and understand.
So which BattleMech are we talking about here :P .
Having played the old Mechwarrior 3 and 4 I found everything pretty clear and I can recommend playing these first as a decent introduction to the setting and what to expect from each mech and each weapon. The new BATTLETECH kinda throws you in without explaining much.
