F1 2017 released for Linux as Feral Interactive’s first Vulkan-only title, here’s a port report

Quoting: BrisseAnd again with the apples and oranges. You can't come to any conclusions using Guru3D benchmark because they had completely different system and benchmark. Michael at Phoronix was using a significantly faster CPU for one thing. Were they even running on the same track?
We can definitely get some conclusions from Guru3D bench. If you see their setup, it's quite similar to Liam setup plus some overclock in the CPU. And if you see Liam results, you'll note as me that the performance from guru3d is lower than Liams in Windows (and Guru3d had their cpu at 4.2 Ghz!). Definitely there was some performance improvement in game/drivers since the game release.

About the track of the test, you can check that in the bench script [External Link]. So yes, guru3d and phoronix test are using Australia track.

I don't think that i7 [email protected] vs i7@[email protected] aren't comparable, but as the former is a little more powerfull It is quite interesting to analize how CPU power affects Nvidia driver performance on Linux.

Phoronix updated their test and included RADV benchs with Mesa 17.3.

As expected, fps are lower than first run, but they're still quite impressive for 1080p@Ultra. The surprise: GTX1060 & RX 580 fps gets higher FPS than Guru3d benchs on Windows. Not sure, but I think that later patches of the game improved performance so Guru3d shows the release/prereslease performance.

Sadly Phoronix didn't use GTX 980ti on the new test run, what would have give an idea of how much plays the CPU on this game comparing Liam results.

Quoting: skinnyrafI am aware of this discussion. It's just that this up to 40% penalty in the review is much higher than expected. It's good that neither dubigrasu nor Phoronix confirm that. 10% gap is great, 15-20% is acceptable, >30% is not acceptable.
The acceptable point would be to get over 60 fps. In all the benchs we can see that when we put more quality in the game, the gap gets little, so all the result should be analized with caution.

For the complainers, if the problem is: "I need more hardware for run the game on Linux", please also remember that you get extra cash when you use Linux (you save 90usd from Windows license at minimum!).

In the current situation of the market, I feel that we cannot get fanatic and ask for equal performance. We're still getting games that were designed for Windows and then adapted for Linux. In the current situation this results are amazing.

Quoting: Mountain ManAlways disappointing to see performance lag behind Windows, but that's to be expected with a port, and that won't change until developers start using cross-platform middle-ware.
Yup. I bought it on my Linux box, I might wait a few weeks to make sure it registers as a Linux sale before hitting it up on Windows. I'm a Linux enthusiast but not a masochist. Based on this my 1060 would be lucky to hit 30 fps on medium while on Windows it can run at 60fps on very high.
Well, Phoronix tests shows a frame rate over 100 with a 1060 + i7 8700k (settings Ultra@1080p). Maybe you should give it a try on Linux...

Phoronix results are quite impressive. In fact, out of the 1080Ti, Linux has better performance than a Windows compared to a bench on guru3d (http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/f1-2017-pc-graphics-performance-benchmark-review,5.html). Maybe there was a performance update after guru 3d test? Or the 8700k is the key? Different test?

Linux marketshare on Steam dropped again in October, as China takes a massive chunk of the market

If the Steam survey didn't count the hordes of Windows users in China, I reckon the Linux share could well be around 4% by now.
Actually, I took some time to calculate that using data from Steam survey and the proportions method (https://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/proportions.html)

If users using Steam in Simplified Chinese are 56% of overall userbase (according to the survey), then 44% are non-Chinese users (I skipped users using Traditional Chinese, since they represent a tiny fraction).

Using proportions:

0.35 - 44
x - 100

Then x is 0.79 percent. That would be Linux share on non-Chinese markets.

But most of Linux users use Steam in English. English users are currently 21% of Steam userbase, according to the latest data. Then we can easily calculate:

0.35 - 21
x - 100

x is 1.6%. That is Linux share on English language market.
Your numbers are correct if you accept that there are no chinese linux users (which is almost true) and that 100% Linux steam users speak english (which is not so true).

My biggest problem of the montly results of Steam is that the Chinese users got to nearly a half of all users account, but if I see concurrent connected users stats, I don't see such increase in numbers. In fact (and what is more extrange), the peak of concurrent users didn't move from Western timezones. I mean, if there really are more users in Asia, why we didn't see a grow in concurrent users for prime time of eastern timezones? Definitely the biggest grow up comes from multi-account users...

EVERSPACE expansion released, will work on Linux soon and it's coming to GOG

Quoting: CyrilBut for ones who cares more about DRM-Free than Linux ?
I'm always thinking that most of linux users buy games (i mean a lot of games, and so without any resistance at all with system of DRM) on Steam is pretty a nonsense. A nonsense for people who use this OS because it's Libre/Free and you can do "anything" you want with it, buying "tons" of games on this platform is "crazy" in my opinion.
Because yeah it's a sort of a prison, you still have to install their launcher on your System. And you can't download games on their site of course. You know the song...
The thing is, how far you can go for sacrifice of some games ?
But yes i'm agree with you, you have more Linux versions on Steam than GOG, sadly.

Anyway, great news !
If you care more for DRM-Free, then you should only buy games that are DRM-Free. But Steam has lots of games that are DRM-Free (I think that most of the Linux games doesn't have any type of DRM), so you don't have to limit your game library to GoG releases.

I completely disagree with the "nonsense" you mention. I really don't see the relationship between the Libre culture of Linux and the use of user space applications (i.e. games). In fact, every purchase I make I see it, in part, as inversion in the development of our OS, due that lot's of fixes and improvements on Mesa (the drivers I use) has come from game developers or even from Steam. So no, no "nonsense" for me.

That may be the case. But I like GOG as a business and want to support them, so my $$ is going their way.
Yes, but their Linux politics goes from soft to none. In my opinion, Steam is doing far more for Linux gaming that GoG.

About the game, is excellent. I kinda prefered AstroKill controls at the begenning, but after playing way a lot of time this last weeks, I think that Everspace is far more complete and enjoyable by the moment.

Can anyone with an AMD card and Mesa drivers tell if the Unreal engine issues of the past are fixed?
Working flawlessly with Mesa 17.2 (Padoka PPA). I think that all the Unreal engine problems where solved with llvm 5.0, so if you see a game with ue 1.16 or newer, you shouldn't have any problem with Mesa drivers & AMD card.

I really like this game. The only problem I have is that it doesn't have enough content, but fortunately I have Everspace to keep playing until the AK developer adds more :D

EVERSPACE expansion 'Encounters' announced, sounds like it's going to be awesome

Just bought EverSpace. Hope it works with Mesa 17.2.2!
