KDE Plasma 6 - Beta 1 released

Took a gamble on then newly released f39 fully intending to go back to gentoo when done, but now I feel lazy as f39 is working well right now.
Will see how things are the next time I need to install.

Quoting: BlackBloodRumI've installed more gentoo systems from random Linux livecds than the gentoo ones. I've been running gentoo as my primary since about 2007. Just this time I had to rush to get some work done as the ssd died and had to finish a feature for the next day.Quoting: grigiI needed to get a new work desktop up and running really fast, so I thought I'd try Fedora 39 Kde, an it's working well.Well, I think you should remember your own use case, and what you really need etc. It's best not to make a rash decision that you'll regret if you need the machine "just working".
I do miss the much better devtool chain and slots from Gentoo though.
I also love the rolling release thing, whereas on Fedora I have to do big upgrades every few months, instead of being to run "stable" but with "latest release" mesa and installing git Python to test that libraries will be supported on the next version.
All at the same time.
Conflicted if I should move back...
If it's purely install time that's an issue, it might be worth remembering you can install Gentoo directly from within your booted Fedora, just create a directory on your root (For example, /gentoo/) extract the stage tarball to it and then continue with the Gentoo install process. This way, until it's ready you can just continue using Fedora as normal.
That'll (hopefully) leave you with a working gentoo install in /gentoo/, granted, you'll only be able to chroot into it, but it's enough to set all the basics up. When you're ready, move the files over to root ( / ) and set your boot stuff appropriately, and you've got a working gentoo install.
Note: This does carry some risks though, so do be sure to have a remediation plan. Just in case. This also isn't a complete guide, but rather a quick overview.

Gentoo, you always get dev dependencies.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI'm a software developer, and honestly, Ubuntu base is the worst. They split dev dependencies into micro things and you have to install 500 little -dev packages. Fedora is at least a little better, only needed to install about 30 -develop packages for everything.Quoting: grigiEhh, I'm on Mint. I don't think of dependencies. :grin:Quoting: BlackBloodRumI wonder if KDE is compatible with slotting [External Link], if it is I might install it in another slot and try it. :grin:That's the biggest feature of Gentoo that I'm missing thesedays. Slots are glorious in how they can simplify how you think of dependencies.

So what the heck is an 'indie game' nowadays anyway?

Indie game to me means it has:
* Independent direction (can make what they want to, without oversight)
* Independent ownership (financial and creative "IP")
* Independent vision (can make the game how they want to, without interference)
As in the studio itself has full creative direction of what it makes, owns what it makes and is allowed to make what it wants to. The studio carries the majority of the risk, but also gets the majority of the reward.
Having a publisher is not part of that definition, as long as they don't interfere with direction/vision on a more than consultative basis, and don't own your creative "IP", you're still indie.
The moment you can't change publishers as a publisher owns some integral part of your creative "IP" you're definitely not indie anymore.
DAVE THE DIVER doesn't own their own IP as it's owned by a publisher, so they fail the independent ownership.

I'm running a latest stable plasma 5 desktop, and the blurry UI has already been fixed as far as I can tell. My one monitor is at 125% scale and the other at 145%, and I'm not seeing any visible blurring on any of the apps I use. (Which doesn't mean it can't happen, just that it's been a pretty decent experience).
Definitely not bug free, but fractional scaling is working fine right now.
Honestly, I'm quite excited about trying Plasma6 out, but this is my primary work PC...

The art and content have subtle mismatches, and the voices are... pretty lifeless.
It was in that uncomfortable valley for me. It was better than some amateur things, but also more... wrong.

My kind of writeup will probably be things like... does it suspend, have weird errors, other power management issues, etc...
Because my current notebook, whilst good ito performance and ergonomics, completely sucks when it comes to things like power management fails, random crashes, suspend-resume lottery, tons of repeating and random kernel errors in dmesg, lack of firmware updates (even for windows, it's a shit show there too).
Never getting an MSI ever again.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI came to the conclusion a while ago that if I'm ever in the need for a new laptop (I have a few for different purposes already that should last me a few years), I'm totally getting a Framework one. They support Linux builds, and the engineering on them means I won't just have one sitting around collecting dust when I can basically infinitely upgrade it...I'm in Batch 1 for FW 16. I'll consider doing a writeup for it when I get it. Probably only in 2 months.

It's kinda worse than that, the mobile 3050ti is hardly faster than the iGPU on that intel cpu, and slower than on an amd 7840u.
It's like RGB leds, great for marketing, annoying in practice.
