What have you been playing recently? We've been tinkering with a Raspberry Pi 4

I've been heavily back into Elite: Dangerous, unlocking some Guardian upgrades. Or trying to. “It only takes 20 minutes!”. Yeah, it does if you go to the right Guardian Site in the first place, have enough focus crystals, and know that “exquisite” and “refined” ones don't cut it. Grr. Over a week later, though, I now have an Asp that'll do almost 50ly in one jump. Woohoo! :woot: Now Colonia's only... about 500 jumps away. Hmm. I think I'll leave it for the moment until I've figured out the neutron star supercharging thing...

Also Assetto Corsa to unwind when I got cheesed off with E:D (I avoided the career mode before because everyone says its' rubbish; it's not the best in the world, but hey, it gives you some goals to achieve), and Minecraft when I got cheesed off with AC.

The Pi 4 is impressive, but I've never been able to get sound to work over Steam Play. I think it's Pulse playing silly buggers on the host end though, because it's the same on my phone (not that my old Moto G would be any good anyway with its 4.5" screen, but you have to try it, don't you?).

Gyroscope tool JoyShockMapper comes to Linux, Valve adds 'Flick stick' to Steam Input

Quoting: zigguratSpeaking of WASD, the thumb stick is indeed better than WASD for the same purpose, if the game supports simultaneous mouse and gamepad.
I find it incredible that we're still using digital controls for movement in the 21st Century, and that “gaming keyboards” are even a thing. Before the rise of the FPS, the keyboard was the last resort when your joystick broke.

And I'm not trying to claim any superiority here; when I say “we” I mean it. I'm as guilty as anyone*. I even bought a mechanical keyboard (I told myself it was for typing, but can't deny that gaming was in the back of my mind too). But surely someone can come up with an analogue movement control that's comfortable to use with a mouse?

*The Steam Controller's good, but it can be a pain to set up and “tune”, especially with the gyro.

3D adventure thriller 'Beyond a Steel Sky' is out now for Linux PC

Quoting: GuestAh, I totally forgot it was coming out this week.
Me too.

Well, now I know what I'm doing this weekend.
Yep: agonizing over whether I can afford it, when I've already got a backlog as long as my arm.

Inspired by Settlers II, the open source Widelands has a new test build up

When I think back to the early '90s: The Settlers, Dune 2, Civilization, A-Train, Transport Tycoon, Theme Park... we always remember the action games like Doom and SF2, but what a golden age for strategy/management games.

Open source voxel game engine Minetest has a new release

Quoting: RandomizedKirbyTree47In addition to the other package formats, user An0n3m0us on the Minetest forums maintains an Appimage version of Minetest [External Link] on Github.
Totally OT, but until I saw the source on that GitHub page I'd never realised that AppImages are based on ROX-style application directories [External Link], which are basically a UNIX-ization of the RISC OS original (!Run becomes AppRun, !Help becomes ./Help, etc.). How cool is that? Build an AppImage on an ARM platform, and you're practically halfway to an Acorn Archimedes.

Go sightseeing in the upcoming Idaho DLC for American Truck Simulator

Soooo... since it's a single player game... that would make it... your own private Idaho [External Link], then.

I'll see myself out.

a VR game made with original Kerbal Space Program developers.
Whaaaaat? That might explain the KSP2 débacle to some extent.

Quoting: CFWhitmanI recently went through Portal and Portal 2. I have started The Talos Principle, but to me it is not as engaging as the Portal games.
Storywise? Because some of the puzzles are soo clever! If you want more Portal, "Portal Stories: Mel" is something I can't stop recommending. In hard mode, it's... well... hard. And so satisfying.
I'll second both of those statements. :) I thought TTP was a pale imitation of Portal at first, too. But it draws you in. I might even rate it higher than Portal 2 now, if I'm honest. And PS: Mel is almost good enough to be an official Valve title. It's a pity the team didn't carry on with more “Portal Stories”, as they intended.

Quoting: scaine2. Elite Dangerous [External Link] (stunning game... just... stunning. And for a fiver?? Or another fiver if you want the planetside expansion)
I've dived back into it myself lately, beginning to discover the exploration side and the engineers (after a year of playing it basically like the 1984 original, on and off). I didn't realise it was so cheap at the moment. It's a steal at that price.

Quoting: ghiumaThanks to Steam discounts I'm playing with Assassin's Creed Black Flag
Hands down, without a shadow of a doubt, the best Assassin's Creed. Yaaaar, me lads! Haul the mainsail and splice the anchor! (Or something. Insert your own “poop deck” joke.)

Quoting: TheRiddickApparently Cyberpunk 2077 will be DX12 exclusive. Could be a issue for running it under Proton as the DX12 component is very early in development still, and no word on RTX features working under that. Windows wins again, :(
That's disappointing. I rarely buy games near to release anyway so it won't affect me personally, but Linux gaming's new-found respectability could take a hit.
